Zara (and her family) need support
NUVO Newsweekly
As she busied herself with her markers on a recent February morning, her mother, Arpana, watched. A parade of emotions crossed the woman's face: pride, love, fear, sadness.
Jorge Tapia's insight:

Looking through so many articles, I came across with this one. It is so shocking to find out about young children who have to go through so much pain at such an early age. It breaks my heart and this article made me tear while I was reading it. My prayers go out to Zara and her family. Sometimes many of us take for granted the things and people that surround us. This just shows that we should all appreciate what we have. It's amazing how even at her worse moments, Zara still tries to make the best out of every moment. She never stops dreaming of castles and drawing fairies with her markers. Her parents are trying to stay strong although it is not an easy situation, they do not lose their hope.

The SAT is going back to 1600 points, killing essay portion
The Verge
The College Board, the private nonprofit that administers the SAT, just announced radical changes coming in 2016.
Jorge Tapia's insight:

This article was about the ways in which the SAT has been modified. The College Board has decided to drop the test to 1,600 points. Radical changes have been made by the College Board coming in 2016. The essay will now be optional and there will be a replacement in the vocabulary words with other that are more common ones to students. I think that this is very fair because I took that test and it was very challenging because for most of the test, I did not know what I was answering or being asked. It will be shorter and worth less points than it used to be before. The chances of getting an education is higher now.

5 (Recent) Historical Events You Should Discuss with Your Students ... | Current Events | Scoop.it
Guest blogger Josh Work reminds us that history is alive and unfolding, and that some of our young students now require full explanations of major events that still loom large in our adult memories.
Jorge Tapia's insight:

This article seemed quite interesting because it talks about many events that have affected the United States and the world in general. It's a teacher who gets a question from one student and it has to deal with the Sochi Olympics at first. The student asks the teacher if there's any sort of good security to protect athletes and to prevent from having a terrorist attack. The teacher then goes through five recent historical events that are important to talk to students about. The teacher discusses the 9/11 attack, Arab spring(2010-Present), World Financial Collapse(2007-09), Natural Disasters(Early 21st Century), and the social networking revolution(2000-Present).

Handbag company lifts Pakistani women from poverty | Current Events | Scoop.it
By switching to a for-profit model, handbag label Popinjay secured better investment, the right employees and is able to help more low-income Pakistani women.
Jorge Tapia's insight:

This article really showed how you can make a difference in a person's life. It was about a handbag company whose mission was to produce fair-wage jobs for these hardworking women. Pupinjay was the name of the company and it attracted its customers for the use of leather and hand-embroidered silk. The article shows how the company was about to collapse. If it weren't for these women, their bags wouldn't be selling off online. The company employed 150 women and they each earned $2.50-$3 per hour. They worked 3 hours a day and they earned more than what they earned before. They still make half of what their husbands earn working full time. Founder of the company Gul, wants to create a brand that represents the values of justice and equality and opportunity for underprivileged artisans. She wants to recognize their great work.
