More Cal State campuses are considering 'student success fees'

More Cal State campuses are considering 'student success fees' | Current Event | Scoop.it
They are called "student success fees" and they offer the promise of more classes and programs and improved graduation rates for thousands of California State University students. But critics say they are a thinly veiled attempt to shift more education costs to students — without increasing tuition.
Yazmine Moreno's insight:

Student Success Fees are just more fees except with a pretty name to it so that they don’t look to bad in the eyes of a student or parent paying for a student’s education. The fees are still another $400 or so that most college students don’t have, especially when the fees are being applied to the schools that aren’t really lacking in resources like Cal State Fullerton for example. It’s only a matter of time before our tuition here at CI is increased because of “student success fees”.

Proposed ban on orca shows at SeaWorld stirs anger in San Diego

Proposed ban on orca shows at SeaWorld stirs anger in San Diego | Current Event | Scoop.it
SAN DIEGO -- A bill by a Santa Monica assemblyman that would ban orca shows at SeaWorld is being blasted in San Diego, home of the marine theme park.
Yazmine Moreno's insight:

If you have yet to watch blackfish drop whatever you are doing, log on to Netflix, and watch it. I saw the documentary about our favorite Orca whale Tilikum one of SeaWorlds orca whales who is no longer performing because of the several accidents with trainers as well as other people. I became slightly obsessed with the whole SeaWorld drama which is why I picked this article. SeaWorld may be vital for San Diego’s economy but something must be done for these poor creatures.

Woman Indicted in Wisconsin Newborn's Kidnapping

Woman Indicted in Wisconsin Newborn's Kidnapping | Current Event | Scoop.it
A Colorado woman was indicted Wednesday on federal charges alleging that she kidnapped her half sister's newborn from Wisconsin and left him behind an Iowa gas station in freezing weather. A federal grand jury in Madison, Wis., returned the indictment charging Kristen Smith with kidnapping,...
Yazmine Moreno's insight:

I feel like in every single one of my classes I'm either talking or doing some separate readings about pregnancy or babies or something so when I saw this it really caught my eye and it amazes me how cruel some people could be. For someone to not only take a baby and leave it for dead, but to take your own half-sisters newborn baby and remove it from her. After reading it I found out that she was a teen mom, just like I had been reading about recently in all the articles for my paper. It is very sad to see such a young baby have to already live through that.

We All Want To Be #Undeportable!! | Dreamers Adrift

We All Want To Be #Undeportable!! | Dreamers Adrift | Current Event | Scoop.it
Yazmine Moreno's insight:

I thought this was another point of view that we had to think about. The fact that Bieber and other cases like this get different treatment compared to other races. Reminds me of Sandra Bullocks argument in her movie "The Proposal" when she yells that she can't get deported... because she's Canadian. This article brings up the point that "white" foreigners are given a lighter punishment for a heavier crime when comparing to a "non-white" foreginer.

These claims shouldn't have a prayer

These claims shouldn't have a prayer | Current Event | Scoop.it
Are secular, for-profit corporations free to violate the rights of their employees by claiming that the law violates their corporate religious conscience? That's the big question at the heart of the two blockbuster challenges to a key provision of Obamacare that will be heard by the Supreme Court next week. In its 225-year history, the Supreme Court has never held that secular, for-profit corporations are entitled to the free exercise of religion. It should not start now.

Five majors to avoid

Five majors to avoid | Current Event | Scoop.it
Do you ever stop and think about how your college degree will look to future employers? As it turns out, when it comes to picking a major, not all disciplines are equal in the eyes of hiring managers. Read on for the inside scoop on degrees employers love, and love to hate.
Yazmine Moreno's insight:

I chose this article because although I’m only a sophomore in college nothing scared me more than the future when discussing my career. I’m in the time of my life where I’m afraid to pursue what I love (psychology) for fear of not being able to find a job after graduation. The fact that psychology wasn’t on either list still makes me a little nervous.

Vote on gay marriage ban amendment delayed at least two years in Indiana

Vote on gay marriage ban amendment delayed at least two years in Indiana | Current Event | Scoop.it
By Abdul-Hakim Shabazz INDIANAPOLIS (Reuters) - A vote by Indiana residents on a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage was delayed by at least two years on Thursday after the state's Senate declined to restore language that would have put the amendment on track for the 2014 ballot. Postponing a public vote on the measure was seen as a victory for gay rights activists. "Today's action is a welcome step back from the brink, ensuring that Indiana's families will not be subjected to a harsh campaign that would add cruel and unconstitutional language to Indiana's state constitution this November," said Evan Wolfson, founder and president of Freedom to Marry, a national group that favors gay marriage rights. The Indiana House had voted in January to advance the gay marriage ban amendment, but softened it by removing language that would have banned gay civil unions.
Yazmine Moreno's insight:

I am a supporter of the gay rights movement so I was delighted when I heard that it is now legal in the great state of California. It gave me hope that we were moving forward as a nation to be more accepting of all minorities. It makes me upset knowing that Indiana is trying to ban gay marriage and I really hope that within the next couple year we can find a way to remove the thought of banning gay marriage in Indiana. We can make our nation a better place for EVERYONE, one step at a time.
