Revenue Is This Quarter, Culture Is The Future

Revenue Is This Quarter, Culture Is The Future | Curious thinking | Scoop.it
Peter (PJ) Fulcher-Meredith's insight:

What a fascinating article! I spent 24 years in a thriving culture that started dying once the passionate conversations shifted from, "great clients, great work, great people." to "have you hit your monthly revenue targets this month". Once this happens the writing was on the wall. A culture built around conversations about 'revenue' is not a culture it is a money making machine, and the only good one of those is at the Australian Mint. Once the conversations start to change to 'shareholder value' your best and most talented people are either going to be shown the door because they have the audacity to question the revenue conversations or otherwise they hastily retreat with the rest of the talent, experience and mentors through the exit door. What is left is worst than a ghost town because even the ghost don't want to be there. Everyone gets the commercial realities of business but few the magical power of growing an attractive, sustainable working culture. Read the article and tell me if I am wrong. Bring it on!

Why The Art of Storytelling is All In How You Think About It | Curious thinking | Scoop.it

Peter (PJ) Fulcher-Meredith's insight:

Agree with Karen this is an excellent article to add to the whole conversation around business narrative. It reinforces is that it is not about you but your audience - they are your context. It doesn't matter what you think it is the way that your audience experiences your story that will lead to them engaging with you or not.

Here are the points I love about storytelling that author Alison Engel makes in this post:

  1. Stories are co-created in the mind of the listener
  2. Stories act as substitute memories -- we relive a story as it is told to us
  3. It's time to mine deeper motivations in our stories to get beyond the 'so-what' kind of storytelling that is common today.

These are all fabulous points that Engel does a great job discussing so we know what to do next. She has some really good insights to share on all three points that can help us in our storytelling.

If you want better business stories go read this article.

Some days the ideas simply don’t come. Your brain is bare and closed for a break. But that’s not very helpful when you have an article to write, a meeting wit
Peter (PJ) Fulcher-Meredith's insight:

okay so some of this stuff seems like a 'no brainer' but who (no matter how creative regard them as) can't benefit from a bit of a primer to get the 'creative juices' pumping. Your brain wants to pattern - that is how it is programmed. These tricks help create new patterns, new pathways. Great ideas are often found on The Road Less Travelled.

A Presentation Isn't Always the Right Way to Communicate | Curious thinking | Scoop.it
Sometimes you just need to start a conversation.
Peter (PJ) Fulcher-Meredith's insight:

Great article by Nancy Duarte (of Slide:ology) whihc reinforces the need for leaders to work with professionals who can advise them when to, "Present or not to present".  The first question I ask my clients who are looking for presentation coaching is,"Why are you making this presentation? Is it the best way to get the response you need?" Conversations are the currency of communication in business but it is the quality of those conversations that will determine the effectiveness. Stand and Deliver ... when it is the right thing to do or sit down, take a breath and think about the best way to communicate your message.
