Daniel Tan's curator insight, May 20, 2015 7:40 PM

I think all these online response systems requiring the use of the students' devices are wonderful. However, is there an impact, perhaps one that might be significant enough, of the use of students' devices in that the device is personal. Do students using an older device relatively to others in the class be sensitive in its use When majority of the classmates have the latest ohone device models. Also when teachers and faculty be comfortable of students while using the devices in the exercise are distracted (actual or presumed or perceived) with other apps during that exercise?

Also when the wireless access point be robust and reliable enough when it experiences a surge/flood of signals when large numbers of simultaneous responses are transmitted in a small time window.

My observation is that teachers do not want to be encumbered with such distractions, uncertainty and confrontation when only partial student responses are recorded due to technical issues. The latter also leads to the technical support of student devices which is unknown (which version of OS), unfamiliar (what other apps or potential of interdependencies) and uncertainty (are you sure they are not checking on their apps while others are still thinking of their responses?)

Chris Carter's curator insight, May 20, 2015 8:11 PM

There are a number of student response systems. The more important question, rather than which one are you using, is are you using any one at all?

K_Lynam's curator insight, May 26, 2015 5:31 PM

Will cost you to get benefit of asking multiple questions, securing data & privacy, and being able to export data. $75/year for basic protections & additional questions, or $180 to add colleagues and get all Mentimeter has to offer. Device agnostic - works across platforms. Real time answers to multiple choice, open-ended or scaled responses.

Moral Machine: @MIT let's you decide who should self-driving cars kill when faced with life-or-death situations1 | Objets | Voitures connectées | Scoop.it

Moral Machine is a platform for gathering a human perspective on moral decisions made by machine intelligence, such as self-driving cars. We show you moral dilemmas, where a driverless car must choose the lesser of two evils, such as killing two passengers or five pedestrians. As an outside observer, you judge which outcome you think is more acceptable. You can then see how your responses compare with those of other people.

This is simply brilliant as it forces you to make moral decisions and then reports back on your biases based on your answers. Some of the choices are questionable (how will a self driving car determine if someone is homeless or a criminal) but overall the process is very useful when considering the decisions we will soon let machines make.

Mobile: The Universal Technology Product via @a2z | Objets | Voitures connectées | Scoop.it

In this update of his past presentations on Mobile Eating the World — delivered most recently at The Guardian’s Changing Media Summit — a16z’s Benedict Evans takes us through how technology is universal through mobile. How mobile is not a subset of the internet anymore. And how mobile (and accompanying trends of cloud and AI) is also driving new productivity tools.

In fact, mobile — which encompasses everything from drones to cars — is everything.

The First Person to Hack the iPhone Built a Self-Driving Car. In His Garage.

The First Person to Hack the iPhone Built a Self-Driving Car. In His Garage. | Objets | Voitures connectées | Scoop.it
A few days before Thanksgiving, George Hotz, a 26-year-old hacker, invites me to his house in San Francisco to check out a project he’s been working on. He says it’s a self-driving car that he had built in about a month. The claim seems absurd. But when I turn up that morning, in his garage there’s a white 2016 Acura ILX outfitted with a laser-based radar (lidar) system on the roof and a camera mounted near the rearview mirror. A tangle of electronics is attached to a wooden board where the glove compartment used to be, a joystick protrudes where you’d usually find a gearshift, and a 21.5-inch screen is attached to the center of the dash. “Tesla only has a 17-inch screen,” Hotz says.

Technology is really accelerating. What an expert can do in one month could take years before. This is as exciting as it is uncontrollable. The only remaining question is to know if simple and fast prototyping could be a good canvas to build upon for safe and efficient designs.
