3 Ways Content “Curation” Can Boost Content “Creation”

Content curation seems to be the only sanity-saving cure to information overload! Still, content marketers often face the dilemma of weighing the pros and cons of content creation versus content curation.

We have been looking at curation and creation as a two separate practices. Yet I beg to differ: content curation can give a huge boost to content creation and that is the key point I want to make in this article.

Content curation can help in refining created content in three different ways.

1. Curated Content Can Inspire Topics For Created Content...

2. Build On Curated Content To Create Your Own Content...

3. Use Curated Content As A “Teaser” To Drive Traffic To Your Own Content...

I can’t think of a better way to sum up this article than sharing the following quote:
"Strangely enough, curation shifts the balance of power back to brands and publications. While anyone can make content, the decision to gather it, and present it by trusted content curators has more risk, and therefore more value"...

Formspring Hits 4 Billion Answers; Transforms Into Content Curator With “Smile Sort”

"Today, the service is adding another feature to its functionality, a tool called “Smile Sort” that aims to transform the service into a content curator. Users will be able to sort responses by the number of “”smiles,” in order to bring the best content to the top of content streams (as seen in the image below). The new feature allows users to see their top smiled responses, check out top responses from other Formspringers, as well as view the top smiled responses to a question they’ve asked multiple people at once. When viewing responses to questions, users simply click through to the “All Responses” page and click “top smiled responses” to see the top responses instead of the most recent ones."

Now You Can Curate Personally Information On Quora With: Boards

Excerpt from article intro:

Quora is taking a step beyond Q&A this morning with its latest product launch, boards. Users can now set up their own personal-themed bookmarking boards, sort of like a Pinterest for text-based information.

Writes Quora CEO Adam D’Angelo in a blog post, “As Quora has grown, we’ve learned that people want to read the most interesting content regardless of whether it happens to be in question and answer format or not.” D’Angelo tells me that this shift fits in better with Quora’s new goal, “to connect you with everything you want to know about.” Its old goal was described as “a continuously improving collection of questions and answers.”

Board onboarding (heh) is easy. Users who want to create a board will now see a “Create a board” option at the top right of Quora and on their header dashboard. Anything can be posted to a board, whether it be links to web content like news and video, images, stuff on Quora like Questions and answers or text commentary...

I, curator?

You need curation. Web curators aren't writers, because they are more concerned with locating, selecting, and presenting information than writing original works. Curators do, however, write text that frames, explains, contrasts ...

Social Bookmarking And Curation: Pinterest, Pearltrees, GimmeBar | Business 2 Community

"The web has gotten so big and so social that regular bookmarking has become practically useless. We needed a better way to find and organize the content that meets our interests. Sites like Delicious and StumbleUpon are helpful at suggesting interesting items, but less so in the curation and sharing of one’s own Web collection. Enter Pinterest, GimmeBar, and Pearltrees, the latest darlings of the social bookmarking world, which are gathering momentum with Millennial users who are all about sharing what they’re into. Here’s a brief overview of each."

The Art of Curation

"Curation, a term traditionally reserved for museums and art galleries, refers to the act of overseeing or being responsible for a collection. Originally an overseer or a guardian of minors, the term came to be used in the domain of Arts in the 1660s. “The curator’s responsibility is to show the best possible work and make it accessible to everyone.” The main objective of a curator’s work was to collect and oversee tangible artwork, historic items or scientific collections. Cut to the 21st century and curation has a whole new meaning. It now refers to an “emerging trend toward integrating and pondering media content using a mix of machine and human resources.” It is process that involves aggregation or simple gathering of content with curation, i.e filtering, categorizing and re-presenting data from multiple sources to offer a unique vision and reading experience to users...."

The Publicly Curated Multimedia Library of America Is Coming: extraMUROS

From the official page: "extraMUROS is an open-source HTML5 infrastructure built on public APIs that aims to fundamentally change the way people discover, curate and share digital collections of books, images, sounds, video and other media.

extraMUROS is a unique collaboration between the metaLAB (at) Harvard, Frances Loeb Library, the Harvard Library Lab and a network of journalists, designers and developers."

From the official video:

"extraMUROS is a groundbreaking project that aims to shape the Digital Library of America into a multimedia library without walls through an open-source HTML5 platform built on public APIs.

Extramuros strives to fundamentally transform how people:

a) Discover

b) Curate

c) Share digital collections.

Extramuros is made up of four key features:

1) Shared Access

Interconnectedness between libraries, museums,  and national archives and repositories (Flickr, YouTube, Internet Archive, tec.) of all kinds.

2) Visual Discovery
Ability to explore content collections in completely new ways driven by innovative visualization approaches.

3) Curation

A collaborative curation system open to anyone to bring together collections, exhibitions or galleries combining text, images, audio and video.

4) Multi-Channeling

Accessibility online and on iPads and other mobile devices."

Robin Good writes: This looks like a very promising project, which brings together and pioners some really innovative approaches in search and discovery of content.

As can be seen in the video, a Chrome extension has already been developed, helping active curator to easily collect content in a variety of formats and from very different kind of sources, into browsable collections.

Inspiring. 8/10

The 3 Pillars of Content Curation

Curation is already becoming an overused word but it's an increasingly important one. Not least because the way in which we discover content that we like or find useful, and how it gets in front of us or gets our attention, is changing radically. With an explosion of choice and noise, and attention becoming the new scarcity, how we choose to curate what gets that attention (or, as below, how it is curated for us) is hugely important to anyone in the business of creating content. And let's face it, that's now everybody. So here's my take on the three pillars of content curation that will increasingly (and already actively) shape the future of content consumption and distribution:

Discovery And Curation: The Rise Of Pinterest

Excerpt from article:

The current toast of the web is Pinterest, the visual pinboard for collecting and sharing content online. The “pinning” phenomena is spreading from its modest beginnings to appearing in national media outlets.

Pinterest is growing for a variety of reasons. It enables users to clip things they like. It emphasize pictures over text, which are more visually appealing and easier to digest. Signing up is easy. Pinterest has crafted a fun, whimsical, artistic image. In particular, it has struck a chord with female users, an attractive demographic. Pinterest has added to the lexicon of “like” or “retweeting” or “reblogging” or “upvoting” with the ability to “pin” content and then “repin” it across the site and other networks.

There is too much information online, too many pages filled with stock images and no context. Search engines provide significant utility, but we still have to exert energy to find what we need after results are algorithmically surfaced. The new crop of social media companies help discovery come online and threaten traditional search. With these new tools, users are able to clip and collect the bits of the web that they are most interested in and, in the process, disregard the rest as noise...
