Forrester report: How Social Media Is Changing Brand Building

Forrester report: How Social Media Is Changing Brand Building | Curation Revolution | Scoop.it

Social media is now an essential part of brand building. Get detailed explanations and real-life examples of the top 3 social branding strategies.

Marty Note
We know branding, the act of creating transferable stories about companies, products and individuals, is being changed by social media marketing. Forrester, interestingly the same people who came out with a study saying social media wasn't impacting sales, just issued a report on how social is changing branding.

Forrester warns social by itself is insufficient to create a brand, an idea I agree with. Here is how this new report outlines changes sweeping branding:

* Redefines the relationship between consumers and brands.

* Forces marketing strategies to adapt.

* Amplifies brand building strategies (MS).

* Create emotional connection.

* Nurture fans.

* Helps create User Generated Content (UGC).
* Creates conversations that can inform brand strategies (MS).

Interestingly few marketers are integrating social into their branding see the chart on page 5.

There is a BIG section about the dangers of attempting to brand with social alone. Some of Forrester's points have merit. Social, by itself, doesn't scale, it is a poor campign medium (me) and it is only as good as the guiding brand strategy.

Put these two ideas together - that social will be critical to shaping brands and few are doing so and competitive advantage will go to those who embrace social media marketing as part of their brand building strategy.

Popup Nation - Why We Are About To Crowdsource Everything

Popup Nation - Why We Are About To Crowdsource Everything | Curation Revolution | Scoop.it

Crowdsourcing's Marketing Secret

When I read Jeff Howe's Crowdsourcing: Why The Power of the Crowd Is Driving The Future of Business I missed the secret implication. The secret implication explored here is Popup Nation.

Popup Nation
Popup Nation is the removal of financial and cultural gatekeepers creating a new group of hotels, restaurants and books created by Andrew Keen's dreaded "cult of the amateur".

In fairness Keen's book was written in 2008 and that seems like a revolutionary lifetime ago. Today one thing is clear. We are about to crowdsouce everything.

This post explains WHY we will crowdsource everything soon and HOW crowdsource for fun and profit.

Why Crowdfunding Is In Your Website's Future - $10M Pebble Watch Campaign on Kickstarter

Why Crowdfunding Is In Your Website's Future - $10M Pebble Watch Campaign on Kickstarter | Curation Revolution | Scoop.it

The "sheer genius" of the Pebble watch campaign on kickstarter will be somethig you want your team to emulate soon, very soon.

Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

The Genius of the Pebble Watch Kickstarter Campaign
No one told the Pebble watch team they couldn't mashup distribution, pricing, marketing, sales and funding all in one brilliantly executed campaign. The team didn't have the "curse of knowledge". They didn't know how the game is normally played and that is really good.

Their lack of knowledge meant the Pebble watch team turned to Kickstarter to solve problems no one ever thought to solve via a "crowdfunding" platform. My ScentTrail Marketing post notes how getting distributors to come to you is brilliant.

Combine solving distribution with Pebble's amazing "create your own customized Pebble", an idea that puts the celebrity endorsement game on its head bedcause they fought to give Pebble $1200 each, and you get sheer marketing genius.

There is so much genius to go around here every Internet marketing team should study how Pebble solved traditional problems any startup faces with a single stroke of genius and OPP (Other People's Platforms).

I bet you lunch; your team will be using OPP in a similar way inside of two years.

Ken Morrison's curator insight, February 19, 8:35 PM

Everyone is wondering if Apple will be releasing a watch.  They should  be checking out Pebble.  This pebble will be making ripples in the tech pond.  Great strategy!

Crowdfunding: Things To Consider

Crowdfunding: Things To Consider | Curation Revolution | Scoop.it

Crowdfunding may soon be a reality in the United States, giving entrepreneurs and would-be mom-and-pop startup investors reason for celebration.

And make no mistake about it: crowdfunding could be one of the most significant changes to hit the startup world in a long time, providing entrepreneurs with a much larger market in which to raise capital for their companies.

**** It would be great if we could create self sustaining and somewhat altruistic funding (crazy I know but probably profitable in this new age we live in). It feels like some fundemental pillars of capitalism are shifting. The idea that self interest, no matter how brutal, wins is already proven silly. In the age of blogs heard round the world "brutal" isn't a great marketing strategy (lol).

The next idea is altruism or what Robert Wright calls "NonZero" is in fact the underpinning of a new world order, a new world order slouching toward a Kurzweilian Singularity...or something. Marty

Do Cool Stuff, Change World, Cure Cancer: Cure Cancer Starter on Guru.com. Is Your Bid In?

Do Cool Stuff, Change World, Cure Cancer: Cure Cancer Starter on Guru.com. Is Your Bid In? | Curation Revolution | Scoop.it

Cure Cancer Starter - Crowdfunding Cancer Research
Loaded CureCancerStarter.org to Guru.com after our Atlantic BT team got overbooked. If you are a developer/designer and want to change the WORLD here is your chance.

How cool would that be?

Imagine you are sitting at a bar and an attractive woman (or handsome man) asks the inevitable, "What do you do," question. You take a sip of beer slowly, look away for a moment and then hold their eyes as you say, "I helped cure cancer".

Doesn't get any cooler than that. The guru.com project listing includes a summary, functional specifications and several revisions. If you've always wanted to be that guy (or girl) in that bar having that conversation then we are looking for YOU :).

Not that guy or girl but KNOW that guy or girl? If you know cool developers who love to stretch and do amazingly awesome things please give them a nudge and come along for a magical mystery tour. There is plenty of work to go around :).

Thanks, Marty

Cure Cancer Starter Crowdfunding Cancer Research is GAME ON!

Cure Cancer Starter Crowdfunding Cancer Research is GAME ON! | Curation Revolution | Scoop.it
Cure Cancer Starter is a crowdfunding platform connecting cancer patients, their friends and...
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

And suddenly Cure Cancer Starter has a quorum with four great cancer centers:

* University of North Carolina's Lineberger Cancer Center.

* Roswell Park Cancer Center in Buffalo, New York.

* University of Wisconsin's Carbone Cancer Center.

* Duke Cancer Institute in Durham, North Carolina.

Both of my treating institutions have signed on to be part of Cure Cancer Starter's pilot program. Cure Cancer Starter is our "Kickstarter for cancer research" platform to bring cancer doctors and researchers together into a common community with an important goal - curing cancer.

Atlantic BT, where I am Marketing Director, is helping create a platform for cancer patients. Cancer patients can take an empowering action by funding research.

The most devastating thing about hearing your name and "cancer" in the same sentence is how helpless you feel. You are sure your life is now beyond your control. The invisible hand is playing with your life like a marionette.

For a year I trained and then rode 3,300 miles on a bicycle I wasn't sick. No colds or sniffles despite riding 10 days in the rain. For 60 days I "cured" my chronic Leukemia.

I had to go back into chemo within weeks after Martin's Ride ended, but I didn't feel helpless until chemo kicked my butt again. Cure Cancer Starter is Martin's Ride 2.

This time, instead of a team of 3, I hope we can create a big "cure cancer" community, a community where doctors and researchers share their projects with people willing to donate and be a part of the cure for cancer. Can't tell you how much it would have meant to send someone $100 and be part of a team working on Leukemia after my diagnosis. Would have been MAGICAL and EMPOWERING.

Thanks to all my Scoop.it friends for help, ongoing support and best wishes. If anyone would like to help by reviewing beta designs, helping form plans and other foundational work for Cure Cancer Starter let me know. There are GREAT smart people on Scoop.it.
