Startups - Four Ways To Redefine Failure

Startups - Four Ways To Redefine Failure | Curation Revolution | Scoop.it

What did Marty learn from starting four companies? Four ways how to redefine failure.

Marty Note
Wrote this piece just before the Internet Startup Summit in Raleigh. It shares my four startup "failures" and the hard won lessons learned. My money scorecard is just about break even and I've had amazing experiences, so "failure" isn't the way I think about my startup experience. As Eckhart Tolle says, "Whatever is happening is exactly what is supposed to be happening."

If you have great stories of hard lessons learned please share and I will curate into the piece on Atlantic BT's blog. Thanks. Marty

Surprise Is Still the Most Powerful Marketing Tool - HBR

Surprise Is Still the Most Powerful Marketing Tool - HBR | Curation Revolution | Scoop.it
Big Data's great, but it can rob your brand of serendipity.
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

HBR makes a conclusive case for why SURPRISE creates the most effective marketing. Surprise is another way of saying exceeding expectations and I AGREE.

The warning shot is if we market ONLY to what we see in our data we become increasingly predictable. We KPI surprise OUT of our thinking and marketing.

Great article on how to build positive surprise into your marketing process and thinking.

A few weeks ago, I wrote about avoiding social media failures. I briefly mentioned our company's "Failure Wall" and was surprised by the number of comments and questions I received about it.
