Curation At Work: The David Rumsey Historical Map Collection

Curation At Work: The David Rumsey Historical Map Collection | Curation in Higher Education | Scoop.it

Robin Good: The David Ramsey Map Collection is an historical collection of thousands of beautiful maps and atlases organized and made freely accessible to the public online in unique and unprecedented ways.

This is a stunning example of a visual curated collection, offering thousands of beautiful images at very high quality, and multiple ways and tools to navigate this ocean of maps.

This online collection offers in fact no less than 12 different ways to navigate its contents by providing dedicated browsers and visual imaging tools ranging from 2D-GIS to SecondLife and virtual QTR panoramas. For example, with the Google Earth visualization, any map in the collection can be seen perfectly mapped on the globe, or by using the Luna Browser one can create collections, save and download images, annotate maps or even create embeddable presentations.

All of the images in the collection have been published online at full resolution and are available to download at different quality levels under a Creative Commons License for non-commercial uses.

This is truly a spectacular collection with marvellous maps and atlases enriched by complementary data, visualization tools and a formidable array of navigation devices.

Possibly the best online curated collection I have seen so far.

Must-see. 10/10

Curation as Digital Literacy Practice

Curation as Digital Literacy Practice | Curation in Higher Education | Scoop.it

Ibrar Bhatt writes: "Digital curation therefore is not just about finding relevant material, although that is a significant part of it, but is also about creating a specific and unique experience by utilising the resulting materials which then become contextualised within a new space. A curator, therefore, whether she is a journalist-by-proxy such as Popova or a student completing an assignment in a classroom, not only collects and interprets, but also creates a new experience with it. In this respect, curation is a process of problem solving, re-assembling,re-creating, and stewardship of other people’s writing."

According to the Content Marketing Institute, original content should be the cornerstone of your content marketing. And curating content can raise your brand awareness and bring more visitors to your website. So how do these two fundamental marketing pieces work together? Very nicely. In terms of content marketing in any industry, how you marry creation and curation could mean your success or failure.

Specifically in education, EdTech consultants, teachers and librarians are doing a great job combining creation and curation to showcase student creativity, school information and thought leadership. We've pulled four worthy examples of users in the EdTech space who exemplify using powerful online tools to master creation and curation consistently. Continue reading →

6 ways to rethink corporate knowledge sharing

The quest to effectively share knowledge within a company is one that still appears elusive. How do you keep on top of your competitors’ developments? How do you monitor articles that mention your brand? How do you make sure your teams get the information they need to make decisions and to learn?

While we never had more ways to disseminate intelligence and knowledge within companies, it's easy to feel overwhelmed so that we're still often perceiving a lack of communication in the corporate world.

"Twitter continues to expand its collection of search filters with the recent addition of search for Timelines and Lists.

It’s showing up as a search filter on Twitter.com and in the official Twitter apps (both iOS and Android).

The option in the left-side navigation says “Timelines,” and then once you’ve selected that search filter, there’s a secondary option above the search results to switch between Timelines and Lists.

For users, the new filters offer a way to find curated content sources from other Twitter users..."

The face of educational instruction is changing once again.  The relaxed manner in which these notes are representing important content is fabulous.  A cirle is almost complete - as a child this sort of doodling in class was stopped and a punishable offense!  Yet so many tutors, educators, and trainers are idealists and visualise while learning and observing the world around them.  It is great to see that this representation of learning is on a comeback of acceptance.

TL Forum 2014: Flintoff, Mellow and Clark - Digital curation: Opportunities for learning, teaching, research and professional development | Curation in Higher Education | Scoop.it

The concept of digital curation has evolved from its original use. While the digital preservation of artifacts is still the primary domain of digital curation, due to Web 2.0/social media applications it has allowed anyone to easily create a topic centered library online to share with the world. Assets found online can now be quickly collated into a visually appealing web site using freely available tools. This descriptive paper explores the potential use of digital curation within three tertiary institutions.

Peter Mellow's insight:

Our refereed paper on digital curation for education presented at the 2014 Teaching and Learning Forum in Perth is now available online.
