One of the biggest feature changes that many businesses are upset about is the removal of a default landing tab.
The good news is you can still have custom tabs, plus the like-gating element still functions. You just can’t set a default landing tab. However, each of your apps still has its own unique URL. That means you can drive traffic to any “landing” page you wish – from within Facebook via ads, your profile and other places as appropriate; and from outside Facebook on your website/blog, other social profiles, tweets, email campaigns, email signature files, and so forth.
With the new Timeline design, you’ll notice the generously large cover image at the top of your page.
Here’s a list of 21 key points (each tip is analyzed in the full article) about the new Timeline design:
1. Preview... 2. March 30... 3. Cover Image... 4. Image rules... 5. Profile picture... 6. Landing tab... 7. App URLs... 8. Showcase apps... 9. Custom thumbnail... 10. Liked button... 11. Interest Lists... 12. Milestones... 13. Wall Filters... 14. Pin posts... 15. Highlight posts... 16. Posts by others... 17. Default wall... 18. Personalization... 19. Adjust photos... 20. Messages... 21. Admin Panel...

Robin Good: Note and Point is an elegantly curated set of high-quality visual presentations selected and described/commented.
The collection is organized in four sections: Keynote, PowerPoint, PDF and SlideRocket.
This is a great example of how effective curation can create value, while providing greater visibility to the authors showcased and integrating an elegant and perfectly fitting advertising model (AdFusion) which is both inobtrusive and highly contextual. (I found the ads on Note&Point so interesting that I reloaded their home page multiple times to see them all, and clic the ones I was most interested in.)
Great example. Recommended. 9/10

Corinne Weisgerber (an Associate Prof. of Communication at St. Edward's University that we were lucky to interview recently) gave this presentation at SXSWedu on March 6, 2012. It's of course targetting educators - natural-born curators. But a lot of what's in that presentation is generic enough so it's interesting to read.
Corinne comes back on 8 steps that she defined as essential for curators and describes how they intereact together to form a complete cycle.
It's also interesting to note how good a fit there is betwwen curation and education; something we've felt for quite some time at Scoop.it by seeing a lot of educators using the platform. Via gdecugis
If you've followed curation as a trend, you've heard of Steve Rosenbaum. His book Curation Nation was instrumental last year in making curation and curators emerge as a trend and as an important group.
As Steve puts it, curators are the Web's super heroes.
But as Steve says, it's just starting and this is juts the beginning. And from what we can see in Austin this year, he's darn right!

This is one of those gems that I love to share. It was written by Gideon Rosenblatt in response to an earlier article written by Eli Pariser "The Filter Bubble" which is about the way algorithms based on our personal searches and who they think we are,
"Computer algorithms aren't the only thing contributing to the 'Internet Filter Bubble."
**In the world of the informataion networker, curating content is only half the game. The other half is curating the curators.
**In that power to choose our connections, rests our ultimate power to reshape our information filter bubbles and radically improve our perception of reality.
**Who we choose to connect with in our social networks deeply affects our ability to see a diversity of information.

Robin Good: Maria Popova has just launched a classy and laudable initiative, focused on increasing awareness and in highlighting the importance of honoring always where or via who you have got to a certain article, report, video or image.
Credit and attribution are not just a "formal" way to comply with rules, laws and authors but an incredibly powerful emebddable mechanism to augment findability, discovery, sinergy and collaboration among human being interested in the same topic.
She writes: "In an age of information overload, information discovery — the service of bringing to the public’s attention that which is interesting, meaningful, important, and otherwise worthy of our time and thought — is a form of creative and intellectual labor, and one of increasing importance and urgency.
A form of authorship, if you will.
Yet we don’t have a standardized system for honoring discovery the way we honor other forms of authorship and other modalities of creative and intellectual investment, from literary citations to Creative Commons image rights."
For this purpose Curator's Code was created.
Curator's Code is first of all "a movement to honor and standardize attribution of discovery across the web" as well as a web site where you can learn about the two key types of attribution that we should be using:
Each one has now a peculiar characterizing icon that Curator's Code suggests to integrate in your news and content publication policies.
Additionally and to make it easy for anyone to integrate these new attribution icons in their work, Curator's Code has created a free bokkmarklet which makes using proper attribution a matter of one clic.
Hat tip to Maria Popova and Curator's Code for launching this initiative.
Whether or not you will sign Curator's Code pledge, become an official web site supporting it, or adopt its bookmarklet instantly is not as important as the key idea behind it: by providing credit and attribution to pieces of content you find elsewhere, you not only honestly reward who has spent time to create that content, but you significantly boost the opportunity for thousands of others to connect, link up to, discover and make greater sense of their search for meaning.

N.B.: Too bad that the Curator's Code bookmarklet doesn't work with Scoop.it, as the one excludes the other. But you could save the two codes for the special attribution characters in a text note and copy and paste whicever you need. Given the need for simplicity and integration this is not an ideal solution but I am sure that between Maria and Guillaume at Scoop.it they will find a way to make this work easily for all. From the official page: "extraMUROS is an open-source HTML5 infrastructure built on public APIs that aims to fundamentally change the way people discover, curate and share digital collections of books, images, sounds, video and other media. extraMUROS is a unique collaboration between the metaLAB (at) Harvard, Frances Loeb Library, the Harvard Library Lab and a network of journalists, designers and developers."
From the official video: "extraMUROS is a groundbreaking project that aims to shape the Digital Library of America into a multimedia library without walls through an open-source HTML5 platform built on public APIs.
Extramuros strives to fundamentally transform how people:
a) Discover b) Curate c) Share digital collections.
Extramuros is made up of four key features: Interconnectedness between libraries, museums, and national archives and repositories (Flickr, YouTube, Internet Archive, tec.) of all kinds.
2) Visual Discovery
3) Curation A collaborative curation system open to anyone to bring together collections, exhibitions or galleries combining text, images, audio and video.
4) Multi-Channeling Accessibility online and on iPads and other mobile devices."
Robin Good writes: This looks like a very promising project, which brings together and pioners some really innovative approaches in search and discovery of content. As can be seen in the video, a Chrome extension has already been developed, helping active curator to easily collect content in a variety of formats and from very different kind of sources, into browsable collections.

Jan Gordon: Here's my commentary based on my experience of using Scoopit and Pinterest
To me, Pinterest and Scoopit go hand and hand. They are both visual and it's important to consider if you're on Scoopit already or thinking about it, expressing yourself on both platforms, (if it makes sense for your business) because it can be very powerful.
Here are some of the reasons it can help your business:
Scoopit is a platform that showcases your expertise, share your hobbies and other interests through content in a beautiful format. It is part of your online personna and it's a vibrant community I have met some wonderful people here.
Pinterest is also a community with some of the same people from Scoopit and many others, (new people are joining everyday). Linking your posts from Scoopit to your pins on Pinterest not only drives traffic to your scoopit site and visa versa but those people can see another side of you that you can't express there.
Pinterest is like a delicious menu of visuals that captivate and attract people to you. I have put all my business boards at the top and my interest boards underneath them.
Pinterest gives people the ability to see who you are beyond your posts. If you're a brand, this is where you can create an online story of text and visuals that gives consumers points of entry through common interests. It's a brilliant way to do business.
I could go on and on but I'll let you see for yourself how I've combined Scoopit and Pinterest together which continues to produce unbelievable results, increase in traffic and brand new relationships from both sites.

Robin Good: Brad Neelan does a good job of outlining and summarizing what it takes to find relevant new content themes that can help you or your company stand out and become more relevant to your readers.
In synthesis, this is the three-step strategy he suggests to use:
"What you are looking for is data insights that highlight a trending topic or illustrate an opportunity area based on emerging interest.
When you couple these trending keyword opportunities with categories of interest to your business clientele, you can formulate a snapshot based on growing patterns of interest.
...When you begin to institutionally think about where you can capitalize on keywords that are either not yet in vogue, or about to become breakout, you will find that search provides a wealth of potential insight to inform your next big differentiating position.
...Once you have begun to think about the opportunities keyword insights can provide, you collect the concepts into a pool of potential targets grouped by theme."

Robin Good: This is a good introductory article to content curation for those who are rightly skeptical about this new buzzword and are wondering how much this just a useless fad or something worth paying attention to.
"...while technology like CurationSoft can be a great tool to gather relevant information, true curation is more about weeding through everything and putting the best content into a digestible perspective for your visitors.
So what makes this a better approach than autoblogging or any other type of content linking?
...anyone can push a button and get content scraped and posted.
It doesn’t take any expertise or knowledge of a topic to do that, nor does it benefit anyone.
But someone who can “sift” and “separate” good content from bad, and add a clearly beneficial perspective on it...
...A good content curator then, can quickly become the “go to” person for information pertaining to a topic, and might even have people opting to check with them first before searching for information on their own.
...content curation isn’t just aggregating or sharing links. Nor is it merely looking for content to add to your blog."
Rightful. 8/10
