Cafetería La Mejor: A Vibrant Cuban Cafe In Brooklyn

Cafetería La Mejor: A Vibrant Cuban Cafe In Brooklyn | Curating Mode ! | Scoop.it
You may have heard that New York is a hub for continental American and international culture. Food and drink culture, to be sure, but most especially coffee culture: from Nordic transplants to high-end Greek coffee, to authentic Japanese kissaten-style service to recreations of the Melbourne coffee experience. Add to that list the newly opened Cafetería La Mejor, adding a splash of Miami color to the growing specialty coffee scene in Brooklyn’s Bushwick neighborhood...

5 Underrated Coffee Cities

5 Underrated Coffee Cities | Curating Mode ! | Scoop.it
Stripped-down design, baristas peering under naked portafilters, boisterous latte art throwdowns. An enthusiastic group of regular customers who like to stick around and chat espresso, and a strong home-brewing population whose greatest debate is: Buono or Bonavita?Sound familiar? Of course. Portland, New York, Chicago. Kansas City, LA, Austin, right?Nope. We’re talking about Santa Cruz, CA and Springfield, MO. Bozeman, MT and Sioux Falls, SD. These days, great coffee can be found in an amazing variety of places in the USA, places that many coffee fans wouldn’t normally think twice about. To help rectify that, we’ve put together a brief list of some of the country’s up-and-coming coffee cities. There’s no “Top 5” aura about this list–any number of places could have made this list (have youseen this place in Waco, TX?), but these five cities are certainly home to exciting coffee scenes, and emblematic of the quiet coffee quality revolution going on all across America

The First Great Specialty Cafe in Milan

The First Great Specialty Cafe in Milan | Curating Mode ! | Scoop.it
When I was in Milan, Italy, last October for La Marzocco’s Out of the Box event, a new cafe had just opened up pretty close by called Taglio. I heard the name bandied about a whole lot the first day of the event—seems everyone was excited about it because it was, they said, the first real specialty coffeehouse in the city. That’s right—in the city of Milan. You think coffee is so great in Italy because that’s where espresso comes from, and that’s where so many of the great espresso machine companies are based. But in fact, espresso is super different in most parts of Italy than what you’re used to at the great cafes of North America, Europe, and Scandinavia. The future is one of the most beautiful things ever—businessmen bellying up to the bar for an espresso on their way to the office, standing as they down the shot and move on. It’s an old culture, and one that couldn’t be more different than the American 26-ounce caramel lattes culture we have in other parts of the world...

5 Excellent Cafes In Hong Kong

5 Excellent Cafes In Hong Kong | Curating Mode ! | Scoop.it
I was born and raised in Hong Kong, but have spent most of my adult life living in New Zealand. I wasn’t there when the specialty coffee scene kicked in. In fact, I remember coffee back home being made the same way as we’d prepare tea, sometimes mixed with sweetened and condensed milk. And then a few years ago, this started to change. My return visits home (for the Christmas holidays and other family events) started to become full of delicious coffee, with many small specialty shops emerging throughout the city. Cafes with small roasters on site, brewing espresso and filter coffee out of world-class equipment, and offering a cafe experience as good as anything back in Auckland. It’s been a transformation, and has happened in just a few short years. The coffee scene in Hong Kong is now very exciting, and I personally look forward to revisiting favorites and trying out new shops on each return home. Last Christmas I narrowed some of my favorites down to this list of five. I’ll be back home soon enough, and look forward to enjoying even more dramatic growth in Hong Kong’s coffee scene. But for now, here’s five excellent cafes in Hong Kong...

How Hugh Jackman Became A Fair Trade Coffee Entrepreneur | Curating Mode ! | Scoop.it
I met Dukale, a small-time coffee grower, while on a trip to Ethiopia as an ambassador forWorld Vision, I was deeply impressed by his strength and his dignity. Despite overwhelming obstacles, Dukale supported his family and produced high-quality organic coffee. I also sensed a kinship with Dukale. Like me, he was a worker and a father who wanted to thrive and provide for his family. Only one thing had been holding Dukale back: his circumstances. He needed tree cover to grow his coffee beans, but he also needed to harvest his trees for fuel. He was able to produce the highest quality coffee, but he had no access to markets that would offer him a fair price...

Sexy Package: Are Melbourne’s Multiroasters Changing The Game?

Sexy Package: Are Melbourne’s Multiroasters Changing The Game? | Curating Mode ! | Scoop.it
Over the last couple of years, Melbourne’s specialty coffee scene has seen a fresh wave of cafes opening – establishments owned and run by a young generation of experienced baristas, pushing for quality and approaching things a little bit differently – three notable cafes of this ilk are Patricia Coffee Brewers, Everyday Coffee, and Assembly Coffee and Tea(winner of this year’s Sprudgie Award for Best New Packaging).Patricia, Everyday, and Assembly are all multi-roaster cafes with clear-cut ideas of their quality expectations. They also focus heavily on the design and aesthetic of their brands and cafes. This combination has brought about a very of the moment Melbourne phenomenon: tasteful, highly-designed custom multi-roaster packaging.

Startup Will Give You 'More And Better Coffee' in Exchange For Starbucks Gift Card

Startup Will Give You 'More And Better Coffee' in Exchange For Starbucks Gift Card | Curating Mode ! | Scoop.it
Ah, Starbucks. We keep going back, but we all love to complain about it, from the lines to the shoddy coffee quality.A new startup has taken notice and is leveraging your disappointment into its bottom line. Tonx is offering coffee subscriptions in exchange for Starbucks gift cards, which they say will result in you getting “more and better coffee,” a release from the company explains.Ah, the Starbucks gift card—that rare gift that is lame, impersonal and incredibly useful. Who wouldn’t want one? People who don’t like fancy lattes, apparently.“A standard $20 Starbucks gift card (which equates to three to four coffees) will magically become around 24 cups of home-brewed, fresh-roasted Tonx,” the release says.Three coffees for $20? We’re not sure what kind of überfancy triple-shot half-soy, three-pump hazelnut, three-pump pumpkin with whip lattes Tonx is used to at those prices. But, yes, Starbucks is pretty expensive, and the 24 cups for $20 deal does sound pretty sweet. To get the coffee, go to tonx.org/better, and plug in your gift card number and PIN. Tonx itself is a subscription coffee service that talks a big game and, judging by this video, is strictly for men in bathrobes and one woman with a floppy haircut.Read more at http://betabeat.com/2014/01/startup-will-give-you-more-and-better-coffee-in-exchange-for-starbucks-gift-card/#ixzz2qH15HyN5

Where the world's biggest coffee drinkers live

Where the world's biggest coffee drinkers live | Curating Mode ! | Scoop.it
America might be famous for running on coffee, but it doesn’t run on much. Not compared to a handful of other countries, anyway. When it comes to actual coffee consumption per person, the US doesn’t even crack the top 15.
For much of Europe, and especially Scandinavia, the story is quite different. In a review in 2010 about Stieg Larsson’s hit Swedish trilogy, the New York Times wrote incredulously about how the books’ scenes seemed to always revolve around endless servings of coffee:

Coffee à la Française: The Bordeaux and Burgundy Blends at Cafe Lomi

Coffee à la Française: The Bordeaux and Burgundy Blends at Cafe Lomi | Curating Mode ! | Scoop.it
France is known for mediocre coffee. That’s changing, with a plethora of new Parisian cafes bringing speciality coffee to the City of Light. But if you’re going to change the French palate you’ll have to start with something that they can relate to, and what better way than wine? It’s here that you’ll find the roastery and coffee shop Café Lomi. In a town that is frequently judged – hell, scoffed at – for its lack of craft roasters, Café Lomi is a welcome gem with the coffee crowd. Nestled at the corner of a small square (Place Louis Baillot), the cafe’s tall windows overlook a wall of colorful graffiti that stretches along Rue Ordener, a visual representation of the attitude and spirit of the neighborhood.

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip — Young Jabar Abu Houli pours coffee from a copper pot for his guests and then waits for them to finish drinking. If they shake the empty cup or put two fingers above it, it means they are finished and do not want anymore. If they hand him the cup in a normal manner, he will pour them more of the black coffee. This ritual takes place every morning and evening in the sitting room of the Abu Houli family home in Deir al-Balah, in the central Gaza Strip. India to celebrate international coffee festival at Bangalore

India to celebrate international coffee festival at Bangalore | Curating Mode ! | Scoop.it
India is known to be one of the top coffee bean producing country and exports to Italy, Russia and Germany. With the prices for Arabica bean falling, Indian indigenous arabica coffee which constitute 1/3 of the total coffee production face stiff competition in terms of revenues. One way to beat this would be taking popularity of Indian beans to an international platform and the Indian Coffee board plans to exactly achieve this by announcing a coffee festival in Bangalore. One can expect an array of events to promote the coffee bean. From the basic strong scented 'Kaapi' to the extravagant Cappuchino, India will promote its diverse beverage at the platform. This will be held between 21st to 25th January and around 12,000 visitors are expected to participate in the event. "Indian coffee, grown under tree shade, is very popular in the international markets," said Jawaid Akhtar, chairman of the government-run Coffee Board of India as quoted in a BBC report. In 2013, India's coffee exports rose marginally by nearly 3% to 3.14 lakh tonnes in 2013 on the back of sharp jump in re-export of instant coffee, despite sluggish global prices, according to the Coffee Board report presented to the media. The country had exported 3.05 lakh tonnes of coffee in the previous calender year and this opportunity will help India improve its standing in the global market. The oldest coffee chain in India is Cafe Coffee day while the latest entrant is Starbucks-Tata alliance and Indian coffee-mongers are definitely lapping up the options and variety.

Beautiful, Complex, Haunting: A Short Film About Coffee And Eritrea

Beautiful, Complex, Haunting: A Short Film About Coffee And Eritrea | Curating Mode ! | Scoop.it
“Being careful about such rituals is key to evoking happy memories and protecting them from dying off.”The intense sensual appeal and romance of coffee is an experience that is capable of transcending all cultures and borders. “Mom’s Coffee,” a video from director Ridwhan Jamal of The Flying Camel, captures that truth beautifully in its depiction of an Eritrean coffee ceremony. This film is about the special place this ceremony of communal affirmation and memory can serve in the hearts of the global Eritrean diaspora.Eritrea is a small nation lying directly to the north of Ethiopia. The two countries have a bitter and contentious history, despite sharing many cultural similarities and some overlapping ethnic groups. Eritrea was first colonized by the Italians, before becoming part of a federation with Ethiopia in 1947. Ethiopia quickly began exerting control over Eritrea and formally annexed it in 1962, which led to a bloody 30 year war of independence, culminating in Eritrea becoming an independent state in 1993. President Isaias Afewerki’s regime has ruled Eritrea unilaterally since that point, keeping a tight lid on any attempts at an independent press or pro-democracy movements. The country’s borders with both Ethiopia and Sudan remain closed and guarded...
