An excellent showcase of best practices in curating content in education while using different tools and services.

Sue Waters pulls together a great number of very good examples, of how curated content can be effectively used in education.

The analysis includes relevant statistical data on the use of content curation tools, and several chapters providing examples of how different types of content curation tools have been effectively utilized within an educational context.

Tools covered: Storify, Slideshare, Scoop.it, Pinterest, Tweetdeck, Flipboard, Popplet, Mindmeister.

Content types covered: Blog posts, Visual notes, Infographics.

This article covers the use of many different content curation tools including

Storify

https://storify.com/

which Margie mentioned recently, that allows a narrative thread to be run through information collated and shared

Flipboard

Which allows you to be your own newspaper tycoon... well sort of!

Using blogs for curation is also great for students! Helps them understand the expectation goes beyond just collecting bookmarks about a topic - but they are expected to analyze, synthesize, and make connections the more they dig in to their topic.

The Things Teachers Save

The Things Teachers Save
Nancy White's insight:

"...teachers are among the earliest curators of knowledge, taking a content area, deciding what’s worthy of further study, and distributing it for examination. This is not a minor responsibility, being asked to weave a simultaneous affection and lasting intellectual lust for what is by definition academic “stuff”—the Declaration of Independence, the Pythagorean Theorem, Homer’s Odyssey, etc."

-I would argue that teaching has to be so much more than this. Standards should be the floor - not the ceiling. And in today's world, students can do the curating as well, developing essential skills along the way, and taking ownership of their learning.

Content Curation Tools: 21 Criteria To Select And Evaluate Your Ideal One

Content Curation Tools: 21 Criteria To Select And Evaluate Your Ideal One | Curating Learning Resources | Scoop.it

Excerpt from article written and curated by Master Curator Robin Good and published on MasterNewMedia:
"Many such curation tools also appear to be very similar to one another, especially if evaluated exclusively from the type of news streams or visual collections that can be produced with them.

The most limiting factor of all, in making an effective selection when it comes to content curation tools is the lack of a proper evaluation framework, identifying the specific requirements and needs that need to be met by the content curation tool to be selected.

I am now publicly sharing this list of selection criteria, complemented by relevant questions to be asked when verifying the availability of these features to help both individuals, small organizations and companies evaluate better, and in a more systematic fashion, their ideal content curation toolset.

Here the features-list, organized into 21 groups. (*I have marked with HS those features relevant only to hosted content curation services.)
1. Import and Export functions
2. Content Organization
3. Clipping Abilities
4. Integrated Search
5. Content Monitoring - News Discovery
6. Filtering
7. Display formats
8. Arrangement
9. Navigation
10.Editing and Formatting
11.Ownership - HS
12.Collaboration - HS
13.Private Collections / Streams - HS
14.Intelligence - Memory

Nancy White's insight:

I love this simple chart, classifying types of curating as informal and formal - personal or organisational. It mirrors steps in an inquiry process. This seems logical, that at the beginning of the curating process, we are looking for inspiration, and begin aggregating information. Then, as we find more personal connections in the process, we start to see context and can integrate with what we already know  and finally apply this new understanding.

digitalassetman's curator insight, August 30, 2013 8:15 AM

Since graduating from library school, I’ve fielded occasional questions about archiving “as a professional in the field.” Then comes the second question, “So, what kind of archive do you work in?” But I don’t. Although I was trained as an archivist and care deeply about archives, I’ve been an editor or a content strategist on most of my recent projects. And though I sympathize with archivists’ anxiety about their continuing relevance, I’m also excited for them, as I am for anyone who has content worth sharing

Exploring Curation as a core competency in digital and media literacy education

Via Robin Good, Paula Silva, catspyjamasnz, Fabrizio Bartoli
Nancy White's insight:

More thinking on the connection of storytelling and curating:

"Curation is an act of problem solving. Curating information to tell a story creates a sense of responsibility for the curator. Storytelling advances the core media literacy principles of analysis, evaluation and creation. By curating, students can compose a story using content acquired on their search with heightened awareness of purpose and audience (Hobbs 2010). All media online is searchable by any user of the web, but the task of the curator is to organize the information into a story in order to share with others in a coherent, nuanced and clear manner. Guided by the teacher, students can access content, analyze and evaluate the messages, create presentations, reflect on findings, and work together in collaborative environments "
