Nancy White's insight:

Excited to see how we might be able to set this up in our GAFE space - students already have accounts, so this is a natural fit to facilitate student curation!

Konstantinos Kalemis's curator insight, August 10, 2015 4:58 AM

Google has just introduced "Collections", for Google+, a new service which allows any Google+ user to group his posts by topic and to create public, shareable collections of his favorite links, articles, videos and images.

To use Google Collections, simply go to your G+ profile page and then select "Collections" on the drop down menu appearing on the top left part of the page.

"Each collection can be shared publicly, privately, or with a custom set of people. Once you create your first collection, your profile will display a new tab where other people can find and follow your collections."

You can either create new posts containing whatever type of content inside a collection, or assign an existing, published post to a collection you have just created.

You can create as many collections as you like.

Google+ Collections is available on the web and on Android (iOS coming later).

My comment: Google+ Collections adds opportunity for creating additional value to G+ users by letting interests drive community engagement. This is a feature that sooner or later any social network will offer.

Free to use.

The Curator Job Is To Unpack Specialized Information To An Interested Audience

As the director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Thomas P. Campbell thinks deeply about curating—not just selecting art objects, but placing them in a setting where the public can learn their stories.

Nancy White's insight:

Many good ideas can be found here regarding what we need to teach students about curating digital content for learning.  The importance of story - and to really look at something (or read it!).  The importance of asking quesitons and seeking answers before adding it to your curated collection to determine if it is a good fit. There are many parallels to the world of digital curation.

Exciting article about the future of our universities!

Olga Senognoeva's curator insight, August 12, 2014 4:39 AM

Curation, as a Pedagogical Tool To Embolden Critical Thinking in Education

Curation, as a Pedagogical Tool To Embolden Critical Thinking in Education | Curating Learning Resources | Scoop.it
Exploring Curation as a core competency in digital and media literacy education

Via Robin Good, Paula Silva, catspyjamasnz, Fabrizio Bartoli
Nancy White's insight:

More thinking on the connection of storytelling and curating:

"Curation is an act of problem solving. Curating information to tell a story creates a sense of responsibility for the curator. Storytelling advances the core media literacy principles of analysis, evaluation and creation. By curating, students can compose a story using content acquired on their search with heightened awareness of purpose and audience (Hobbs 2010). All media online is searchable by any user of the web, but the task of the curator is to organize the information into a story in order to share with others in a coherent, nuanced and clear manner. Guided by the teacher, students can access content, analyze and evaluate the messages, create presentations, reflect on findings, and work together in collaborative environments "

Nancy White's insight:

I am very excited to find this work to share with my teachers. I continue to get pushback as I try to encourage them to allow time for students to curate.  The fact of the matter is that true curation takes time, but the skills gained by students cannot be ignored, and research and critical analysis are found throughout the Common Core Standards. Curation is also a pathway to personalized learning as students pursue their own areas of interest through the art of curation.

A Flipped Classroom - Students as Curators with Storify

A Flipped Classroom - Students as Curators with Storify | Curating Learning Resources | Scoop.it

Sherry Stones is presenting the workshop: “A Flipped Classroom: Students as Curators with Storify”.

Storify will be used to demonstrate design multimodal/multimedia research-based assignments, due to its features such as Hashtag specific Tweets, Flicker and Instagram images, Soundcloud audios and Youtube videos.

Most of the expected outcomes of the workshop can be associated to teaching and learning in general.

Important ideas:

a) Storify has a great educational potential;

b) You can organize Storify content based on theme or topic;

c) You can easily embed Hashtag specific Tweets, Flicker and Instagram images, Soundcloud audios and Youtube videos;

d) It helps students develop research, synthesis and presentation skills;

f) It helps students to evaluate the credibility and relevance of web sources;

g) It enables teachers to set assignments and rubric;

h) You can embed a Storify page into a Blog;

i) Other types of Open Access Content are great for embedding on Storify, such as: Xtranormal, Goanimate, Animoto animations; Infographics and Flicker images; Google Docs; Vimeo, Big Think, and Academic Earth videos; Webcomics; Prezi and Google Slideshows; Learning Objects.
