Over the coming weeks, users will see “Add Interests” appear in the left-hand sidebar on their newsfeed. Users can also create lists from “Create List” in the “Interests” page.

 

Interest lists can help you turn Facebook into your own personalized newspaper, with special sections—or feeds—for topics that matter to you. You can find traditional news sections like Business, Sports and Style or get much more personalized.

 

Interest Lists are, of course, similar in concept to Google+ Circles, though they are limited to curating content from public figures and Pages..."

Robin Good: Maria Popova has just launched a classy and laudable initiative, focused on increasing awareness and in highlighting the importance of honoring always where or via who you have got to a certain article, report, video or image.

 

Credit and attribution are not just a "formal" way to comply with rules, laws and authors but an incredibly powerful emebddable mechanism to augment findability, discovery, sinergy and collaboration among human being interested in the same topic.

 

She writes: "In an age of information overload, information discovery — the service of bringing to the public’s attention that which is interesting, meaningful, important, and otherwise worthy of our time and thought — is a form of creative and intellectual labor, and one of increasing importance and urgency.

 

A form of authorship, if you will.

 

Yet we don’t have a standardized system for honoring discovery the way we honor other forms of authorship and other modalities of creative and intellectual investment, from literary citations to Creative Commons image rights."

 

For this purpose Curator's Code was created.

 

Curator's Code is first of all "a movement to honor and standardize attribution of discovery across the web" as well as a web site where you can learn about the two key types of attribution that we should be using:

a) Via - which indicates a link of direct discovery

b) Hat tip - Indicates a link of indirect discovery, story lead, or inspiration.

 

Each one has now a peculiar characterizing icon that Curator's Code suggests to integrate in your news and content publication policies. 

 

Additionally and to make it easy for anyone to integrate these new attribution icons in their work, Curator's Code has created a free bokkmarklet which makes using proper attribution a matter of one clic.

 

Hat tip to Maria Popova and Curator's Code for launching this initiative. 

 

Whether or not you will sign Curator's Code pledge, become an official web site supporting it, or adopt its bookmarklet instantly is not as important as the key idea behind it: by providing credit and attribution to pieces of content you find elsewhere, you not only honestly reward who has spent time to create that content, but you significantly boost the opportunity for thousands of others to connect, link up to, discover and make greater sense of their search for meaning.

Thanks Robin for sharing and curating this article with your summary. I discovered it via Barbara Bray's collection where she had re scooped your scoop -- [and if following the curator's code added a via]. I came over here to rescoop (with a via!) because you are the original source and one of the links was broken (you corrected it and added an update) thus reminding me the importance of going to the original source. Here on scoop.it you can just follow the trail of the rescoop icon.

I am disappointed that the bookmarklet doesn't work together with the scoop.it one - but it would be great to have it integrated. Now to figure out how to rescoop it with the characters.

Hi Beth, thanks for your kind feedback. I was just out today for a video interview with Nancy White here in Rome, and she mentioned you as someone she likes for your ability to curate and make sense of things.

Re the integration of the curators' code icons, I have received feedback from Guillaume De Cugies of Scoop.it that he has been exchanging with Maria Popova and that he is looking with her for a way to integrate the two.

For now you can simply install the Curators' Code bookmarklet and use the "via"<a href="http://www.curatorscode.org" target="_blank" style="font-family:sans-serif;text-decoration:none" >&#x1525;</a> or hat tip <a href="http://www.curatorscode.org" target="_blank" style="font-family:sans-serif;text-decoration:none" >&#x21ac;</a> icons by copying and pasting their code into your scoops manually. The problem, at least for me is, that the scoop.it editing window is in the same position where the Curators' Code bookmarklet is and therefore I can't see both at the same time.

In any case I think it would be trivial for Scoop.it or any other tool to integrate such buttons directly into their system without having us to use two different tools for one task.

Robin Good: Nonetheless Magnify.net founder Steven Rosenbaum states "“I believe in the freedom of innovation", his company has just been awarded U.S. Patent No. 8,117,545 covering hosted video discovery and publishing platforms.

 

The patent description clearly covers any web-based service which allows you to create a topic-specific channel with manually or auto-curated video content.

 

Here the exact wording: "A hosted system provides any Internet user with the ability to quickly set up and customize a video channel, preferably as a web page or site that can be reached from any Internet-accessible device having a web browser.

 

The solution includes tools for use by channel site creators to customize the look, feel, and page design.

 

A particular web page or site may be associated with a given subject.

 

As used herein, a page or site that has such an association is sometimes referred to as “subject-specific...” 

 

I don't know what's your take on this, but I personally don't see this as good news for curation and video curation startups, who are presently innovating in this space (like Blinkx, Redux, Chill, Vodpod, Magma, Yokto, Shufflr, Griddeo, Shortform, Mixd.tv, Embedr, Plizy, Vidcaster, Yubby, and many others).

 

Patents, whether in the hands of large or small players are the antithesis of open innovation and it is for me difficult to support who in the name of a better future, choses to utilize the means of his worst enemies to achieve its business ends. 

 

While Magnify.net investors may indeed pretty happy about this, I am not.

Thinking about the sheer volume of information — stories, images, videos, data — available from The New York Times can evoke a simultaneous glee and terror.

It is simply impossible for readers to see them all.

 

The task for beta620, the Times experimental projects group, launched Deep Dive that uses the Times’ massive cache of metadata from stories to go, as the name suggests, deeper into a news event by pulling together related articles. So Deep Dive would provides readers a collection of stories relating to a topic, based on whatever person, place, event or topic of their choosing.

 

What’s interesting about Deep Dive? At least three things:

1) Deep Dive relies on the extensive tagging system the Times uses for all its stories and makes the Times Topics pages possible. As part of the editing flow tags are applied to stories by editors or producers, with suggestions provided by an internal algorithm. Deep Dive looks for connections among topics.

 

2) Deep Dive’ unique interfact, where the related articles flow into the same frame as the main story when selected. You need never leave the page; jumping backwards or forwards in articles all happens in the same space. That’s a departure from the pageview-driven way most news sites are designed. But Deep Dive’s UI matches its underlying thesis: that individual articles are really pieces of a larger story, told in pieces over time and across bylines and datelines.

 

3) More interesting, Deep Dive will also allows users to save their “dives,” which would be constantly updated with new articles. What Deep Dives promises is an alert more directly based around a specific developing story.

 

But beyond those elements, the real promise of Deep Dive, though, is that it continues to show the Times’ flexibility in providing different ways for different kinds of readers to access its content...

Robin Good: Chill, the video sharing and discovery site, has just introduced a new feature that allows anyone to clip and share, on a Pinterest-like thematic board, all of the video clips he finds on the web.

 

The new Chill bookmarklet works very much like the Pinterest one. When you click it, a page shows you all of the video clips found in that page and offers you to clip and "post" the one you want, with your comments. 

 

It's as easy as that.

 

The generated "curated" Chill video boards are easy to scan and browse, though, in my view, a great boon would be the ability to check a few of those videos and to click a play button that plays them full screen back to back. This way I have the best of curated content, my own selection, and the final lay-back and watch gratification option.

I didn’t enjoy it, as I detest arguing in public (or even at all), but this seemed to matter. Not in the way that poverty or injustice or corruption matter.

 

But it was important to me because I felt my adversary was simplifying to the point of losing meaning, which seems to be almost a way of life where a new or complicated word is involved.


It was an argument about the term “content curator” and what it means. I had started an online discussion asking for examples of content curation in internal communications (because it’s one of my fields of interest).


The only response was more than I had bargained for.

 

My correspondent felt vehemently that “curator” was a lexical relic, exhumed from a dusty Victorian dictionary by software manufacturers hyping their wares. He strongly advised professional communicators not to confuse their clients by using this “jargon”. “Editor” would do fine.

 

I wasn’t convinced… but… did he have a point?"

This is the second in a series of three videos highlighting a 2012 conversation on the future of media on the social web organized by Ben Elowitz, CEO of Wetpaint.

"Today Spool is mostly being used to bookmark and sync content that you want to consume later across multiple devices.

But it sees an opportunity to be more than just a way for users to manage content that is interesting to them. It is also enabling them to share that content with relevant groups.

 

The application is a bit of a combination of Dropbox and Evernote, letting users store videos, articles, images and even PDFs in the cloud. But the sharing aspect is what is really interesting and a real opportunity.

 

While Facebook and other services are enabling so-called frictionless sharing of what our friends and contacts are watching and consuming at any given time, that has also resulted in a lot of noise and not a whole lot of signal. It is hard to know what’s good and what’s not. So what Spool hopes to do is to enable users to more easily share relevant content within groups..."

Getting Started

You can get started in content curation quite quickly.

 

a) All you need is a social media platform, such as a blog, Twitter feed, open-access Facebook page, or Google+ profile.

b) Find the best content and add new items daily.

c) Focus not on your own interests, but those of your readership.

d) Prove that you can draw readers as a trusted source and keep them coming back for more.

e) Then you should try to secure an internship.

Many content curation firms, such as Mediaite, Gawker and Flavorwire, offer internships that will give you hands-on training in the field. They’ll train you to examine your audience, compile potential sources and pitch your content to the audience in an attention-grabbing way."
