Monica S Mcfeeters's curator insight, September 22, 4:23 AM

Not a bad way to inspire future visionaries. The world needs really fresh, new answers for the unique problems and conditions students today will face in the short and long term. Old traditional answers will not work this time unless we role our lifestyles back to the 1950s. We need to ideas, even those that we thought were working in the past were not really what we needed. We were not thinking of the impact and trade-off our creation would have on altering the life, livelihood and even the existence of species in what has turned out to be the very near future. "genius hour", complemented by informed studies and research, is just what we need to inspire more people to creatively think and wonder.

The nature of innovation in education

The nature of innovation in education | Cuppa | Scoop.it

The media love simple, superficial images because they are easy to sell to the masses. This is the same with politicians, and it is the opposite of true innovation. It is sheep following a fashion so that they can appear innovative. The truly innovative thing would be a sustainable situation where all pupils routinely supported all their work on electronic devices, not just a few for parts of the curriculum time.

Worth reading just for the above quote.

Shawn Nason, Director, Xavier Center for Innovation's curator insight, September 20, 9:48 PM

"Education innovation needs to be focused on learning gains, scope for inclusion and reducing costs. If technology helps then it will be obvious." Well said! How will we use technology at Xavier is the question. We want to be on the cutting edge, not the one being cut-out.

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, September 16, 11:04 AM

I cringe with the contemporary notion about what a life-long learner is. The term has been appropriated into a neo-liberal agenda to mean we are learning what the boss says we should. Having said this, the article makes valuable points. For example, reading and setting aside a fund for new books are excellent ideas. Reaching out to others who might add to who you are is also another good idea.
