The Holy Ghosts launch Southern Fried 2013 in great style
Perth's Southern Fried Festival was launched in great style last night with a stunning performance by Edinburgh based country-rock outfit, The Holy Ghosts at The Twa Tams.
A superbly tight set featured the band's own material including tracks from their latest EP, Voodoo Shakedown. Songs such as When We Were Kings, with its pounding beat, sharp guitars, honk-tonk piano and perfect three-part vocal harmonies manage to achieve the remarkable feat of sounding totally fresh at the same time as having the quality of established classics.
Devil on Your Side, the title track from their earlier EP, is also outstanding. The sweet, plaintive vocals of Jacky Sandison underpinned by jangling guitar riffs and wailing harmonica with surprising little backing vocal flourishes has the polished perfection of performers who have been around for years rather than the 18 months or so that The Holy Ghosts have been together.
The icing on this very tasty cake was an encore performance of a genuine classic - The Band's 1968 hit, The Weight, which had the crowd on their feet roaring for more.
The Holy Ghosts have an album due out later this year, so watch out for that. In the meantime, check out their website and look out for a gig near you.
