Story, interrupted: why we need new approaches to digital narrative – Nieman Storyboard - A project of the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard | Culture(s) transmedia | Scoop.it

The way we tell stories in print has been mostly the same for some time now. Space constraints and graphic layout have made the narrative flow a broken one. With the advent of digital devices and rich new ways of shaping content, the pressure is on to rethink how we produce and present our stories.

Building a “Serious Game” for Education

Building a “Serious Game” for Education | Culture(s) transmedia | Scoop.it
We all know how it works in the animal kingdom: when you watch two leopard cubs play, for example, you expect that it’s not simply about fun and pleasure. It’s about honing skills; it’s about figuring out hierarchy.

"And yet, with humans, we often forget that play is serious. We dismiss play and games as “sheer entertainment,” distinct from life-lessons and skill-building."

[Good point. The rest is fairly familiar and mentions the usual suspects, I guess.]

Role Play Games mashed up with iPhone, board game and Augmented reality. OggBoard via @cnet

Role Play Games mashed up with iPhone, board game and Augmented reality. OggBoard via @cnet | Culture(s) transmedia | Scoop.it

Dungeons & Dragons and other turn-based strategy games are alive and well. Gamers paint elaborate miniature fighters, monks, thieves, and monsters and send them out to battle on tabletops around the world.
OggBoard, a new Kickstarter project, is looking to bring those characters to life without plastic or paint. The concept is to mix augmented reality with board games so that knights and creatures take shape on your iPhone.
The OggBoard has an appealingly minimalistic design. It features a playing surface with small tiles and docks on either side for your iPhone or iPod Touch. Each tile is rendered on the screen as a different 3D character.
"We aren't just trying to make new apps, we are trying to change the way players and developers think about strategy gaming," said OggBoard co-creator Sam Lytle

Thanks! As a gamer and game writer/designer, I know that a game is one thing and novel another. So I feel that what a gamer would want would be a compelling story set in a game world, while remaining very much a novel that stands on its own. I think with this writing ‘philosophy’ it means that someone who doesn’t even play games can have a rich story experience, while the gamer will feel that world, the characters, and all the story elements deepen. At least, that’s the goal!

You’ve got a solid background in transmedia storytelling, and by that I mean presenting audiences with a the same narrative across multiple mediums: you can play the game, then read the book, and then watch the movie. In this case, you’ve written the book and the game. Can you talk about some of the challenges when you’re trying to tell a story from multiple perspectives like this?

Games and writing for are very much about some key things. First, games are collaborative; there is a team. That team has ideas. You may shape or control some of the process, sometimes not so much. And for the game writer, it is about building a world that makes dramatic sense, almost a theme park approach. Here’s the asteroid. Look at what it did. Here’s what humans had to do to survive.

BBC Immersive Writing Comp: Create a StoryWorld where characters & story help audiences get lost in

BBC Immersive Writing Comp: Create a StoryWorld where characters & story help audiences get lost in | Culture(s) transmedia | Scoop.it

Think the Matrix, Star Wars, Doctor Who, Lost, Marvel Universe - world's so dense, they move beyond linear narrative, with characters and audience having multiple perspectives on the events that impact that world.

We know this isn't easy - so over the next 3 months we will be looking to help you understand how this world can be created in five stages - world; character; story; audience; and medium.

At the end, one lucky writer will have the opportunity to win 6k to see their storyworld developed by Portal Entertainment, a cross-platform production with backgrounds on Doctor Who and branded entertainment.

The next five have their work reviewed and fed back on by Sarah Clay, Exec Multiplatform Producer (Becoming Human, E20, Waterloo Reunited).
