MILLENNIALS DON’T BELIEVE IN WHITE FLAGS

MILLENNIALS DON’T BELIEVE IN WHITE FLAGS | Culturational Chemistry™ | Scoop.it

“Don’t give up; don’t ever give up!” Millennials at the older end of their generation were about 12 or 13 years old when Jim Valvano shared these inspirational words 20 years ago during his speech at the 1993 ESPY Awards. Many millennials weren’t even born yet. These memorable words from the former NC State coach still somehow serve as a mantra for millennials.

BATTLE OF THE MILLENNIAL MINDSETS

BATTLE OF THE MILLENNIAL MINDSETS | Culturational Chemistry™ | Scoop.it
Congratulations to The Golden State Warriors on winning the 2014-2015 NBA Championship! This NBA Championship series was essentially a battle between two of the most popular Millennials in the world… Stephen Curry and LeBron James. And for as many generational attributes as these two players have in common, they represent two very different Millennial personality types and leadership styles.

FAMILIARITY BREEDS TRUST

FAMILIARITY BREEDS TRUST | Culturational Chemistry™ | Scoop.it
There is a popular expression that states “familiarity breeds contempt.” This expression originated based on the moral to one of Aesop’s Fables, “The Fox and The Lion.” I respectfully disagree with Mr. Aesop… at least when it comes to people. When discussing relationships between people, it is my belief that frequency breeds familiarity, and familiarity breeds trust.

NO “IFS” IN COMMITMENT

NO “IFS” IN COMMITMENT | Culturational Chemistry™ | Scoop.it
Attention all Millennials… the leadership torch is being passed on to you and there is a lot to learn about being a good leader in the 21st century. One of the first things that you should know about being a good leader in the 21st century is that good enough is no longer good enough.

BUILDING STRONG LEADERSHIP SKILLS

BUILDING STRONG LEADERSHIP SKILLS | Culturational Chemistry™ | Scoop.it
I’ve never officially been in the construction business. Maybe some of you have, but I’m sure that like me, many of you haven’t. I would argue however, that because we are all perpetual “works in progress”, we are personally and professionally always “under construction”. What does that construction process look like for building your dreams in the 21st Century?

HOW COMMITTED ARE YOU?

HOW COMMITTED ARE YOU? | Culturational Chemistry™ | Scoop.it
“On a perfect day, I know that I can count on you. But when that’s not possible, tell me… can you weather the storm?” Although the young modern day philosopher that posed this question was known more for his vocal riffs than his commitment challenges, the question remains valid… “Can you weather the storm?”

GIVE ME ONE REASON

GIVE ME ONE REASON | Culturational Chemistry™ | Scoop.it
“Give me one reason to stay here, and I’ll turn right back around”. Some of you may remember these lyrics from that Tracy Chapman song from back in the day. It was one of her biggest hits during the mid 90’s. I always remember thinking to myself whenever I heard that song “C’mon dude – you can’t give her ONE reason to stay?!… Not one? SMH.”

DON’T GET STUCK IN THE MIDDLE

DON’T GET STUCK IN THE MIDDLE | Culturational Chemistry™ | Scoop.it
Life is the way that it should be; it’s the way that it is! This is a tough lesson to learn for all, but it is especially tough for entrepreneurs. I want my Millennial entrepreneurs to know that your journey of entrepreneurship will start of great. And as long as you are in alignment with assignment and you don’t give up, it will end up great. It’s that middle part that’s going to beat you up!

POWER TO THE PEOPLE

POWER TO THE PEOPLE | Culturational Chemistry™ | Scoop.it
The seductive allure of power can be a dangerous thing. And to quote Mr. Kanye West…”No one man should have all that power”. I don’t typically quote or agree with Mr. West on many things, but this is one case where I do, especially when it comes to leadership. No one man or woman should have all the power.

LIVING THE GOOD LIFE

LIVING THE GOOD LIFE | Culturational Chemistry™ | Scoop.it
One of my first jobs after college was as a cashier at Giant Food grocery store in Towson, Maryland. This was over 20 years ago. I met a young man named Andre Tyler at that Giant, and he became and remained one of my closest friends up until this very day. Dre reminded me of that Giant Food recently and the young Tru Pettigrew that he met there over 20 years ago.

SEEKING INTEGRATION OVER BALANCE

SEEKING INTEGRATION OVER BALANCE | Culturational Chemistry™ | Scoop.it
Achieving work-life balance became a big deal when Generation X came of age and entered the workplace. The notion of work-life balance to Baby Boomers at the time was viewed as somewhat of a compromised work ethic. This perception of having a poor work ethic is partially why Generation X was labeled as the “Slacker Generation.”

HOW’S YOUR SELF-DISCIPLINE?

HOW’S YOUR SELF-DISCIPLINE? | Culturational Chemistry™ | Scoop.it
Hopefully your parents or guardians disciplined you when you were younger. This is not because I take any joy in whatever misery this may have caused you, but because I know the value of discipline. And if no one disciplined you when you were younger, it is highly unlikely that you’re able to exercise a lot of self-discipline now that you’re older.

EVERY VISION HAS A PRICE

EVERY VISION HAS A PRICE | Culturational Chemistry™ | Scoop.it
Tell your people where you plan on taking them, how you plan on getting there, and the challenges that they will encounter along the way. Many organizations focus on sharing the benefits of joining their organization, as they should. But do not stop there. Any organization that has a vision of accomplishing something great is going to have some challenges along the way. And the members of that organization will have to share in the experience of those challenges.

WHAT’S IN YOUR TOOLBOX?

WHAT’S IN YOUR TOOLBOX? | Culturational Chemistry™ | Scoop.it
Every year during the NCAA Final Four, we all witness some of the most talented college athletes in the world show off their skills. We hear commentators use phrases like “he has the complete package” or “she’s got it all” or “he’s got all the right tools” to describe these great athletes. What you shouldn't lose site of, is that there are plenty of players out there that don’t necessarily have “all the right tools” but they are still out there winning and making it happen.

Living a Dream is Living a Purpose

Living a Dream is Living a Purpose | Culturational Chemistry™ | Scoop.it
Time and time again we as people are told that we have to face reality when it comes to wanting to live out our dreams. The “Harsh Reality” that is taught to us at an early age is that you more than likely will not live your dream because you will have to face reality. I comment on this topic because I want millennials to understand that your reality is what you make it. Dreams are not only played out in your sleeping state of mind. Dreams can become reality through persistence and hard work. You are living out your dreams during your daily life when your idea career or goals have become part of your daily routine.

Just because they don’t agree, that doesn’t mean that it’s not true. They don’t have to agree for it to be a good idea either. The reality is… the proverbial “they” have been disagreeing with the truth and hating on good ideas since before you were born. That’s their job.
