Culturally Relevant Pedagogy

Artist and high school teacher D'Ette Nogle learns how to dougie. She, also, does not believe in a god who doesn't dance.
camille jurado's insight:

This video may not seem very educational, but look at the bigger picture, the teacher is stepping out of the typical student teacher relationship and doing something which is culturally relevant for many African American youth (amongst others):doing the Dougie!

InTIME describes what culturally responsive teaching is and isn't.

Gay (2000) defines culturally responsive teaching as using the cultural knowledge, prior experiences, and performance styles of diverse students to make learning more appropriate and effective for them; it teaches to and through the strengths of these students.  Gay (2000) also describes culturally responsive teaching as having these characteristics:

Culturally relevant teaching - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Culturally Relevant Teaching is a pedagogy that recognizes the diverse cultural characteristics of students from different ethnic backgrounds and adjusts teaching methods to account for this diversity[1] Culturally relevant teachers display cultural competence: skill at teaching in a cross-cultural or multicultural setting.[2] They enable each student to relate course content to his or her cultural context.[3]

The term "culturally relevant teaching" is often used interchangeably with "culturally responsive teaching".[4] This practice is also referred to as "culturally relevant pedagogy".[5]

While the term culturally relevant teaching often deals specifically with instruction of African American students,[6] it has been proven to be an effective form of pedagogy for students of all racial and ethnic backgrounds. For instance, there is extensive research on culturally relevant teaching among Indigenous American youth.[7] However the majority of this practice is undertaken in a primary or secondary school setting, Jabbar and Hardaker (2012) argue that there is room for discussion and implementation within a higher education environment.[8]

The reasons to include multicultural (MC) literature  in your classroom are numerous. Culturally Relevant Pedagogy is all about "building bridges" between cultures and putting the curriculum in the context of student's cultures. MC Lit allows teachers to do this at every level of development. This allows teachers to help students see themselves reflected in the literature being read in the classroom. Using MC Lit makes school relevant to their lives and helps motivate them to succeed.
