How artificial intelligence is changing our lives

How artificial intelligence is changing our lives | Cultura y Comunicación | Scoop.it

In a sense, AI has become almost mundanely ubiquitous, from the intelligent sensors that set the aperture and shutter speed in digital cameras, to the heat and humidity probes in dryers, to the automatic parking feature in cars. And more applications are tumbling out of labs and laptops by the hour.

“It’s an exciting world,” says Colin Angle, chairman and cofounder of iRobot, which has brought a number of smart products, including the Roomba vacuum cleaner, to consumers in the past decade.

What may be most surprising about AI today, in fact, is how little amazement it creates. Perhaps science-fiction stories with humanlike androids, from the charming Data (“Star Trek“) to the obsequious C-3PO (“Star Wars”) to the sinister Terminator, have raised unrealistic expectations. Or maybe human nature just doesn’t stay amazed for long.

“Today’s mind-popping, eye-popping technology in 18 months will be as blasé and old as a 1980 pair of double-knit trousers,” says Paul Saffo, a futurist and managing director of foresight at Discern Analytics in San Francisco. “Our expectations are a moving target.”

The ability to create machine intelligence that mimics human thinking would be a tremendous scientific accomplishment, enabling humans to understand their own thought processes better. But even experts in the field won’t promise when, or even if, this will happen.

Entrepreneurs like iRobot’s Mr. Angle aren’t fussing over whether today’s clever gadgets represent “true” AI, or worrying about when, or if, their robots will ever be self-aware. Starting with Roomba, which marks its 10th birthday this month, his company has produced a stream of practical robots that do “dull, dirty, or dangerous” jobs in the home or on the battlefield. These range from smart machines that clean floors and gutters to the thousands of PackBots and other robot models used by the US military for reconnaissance and bomb disposal.

While robots in particular seem to fascinate humans, especially if they are designed to look like us, they represent only one visible form of AI. Two other developments are poised to fundamentally change the way we use the technology: voice recognition and self-driving cars.

Project Based Learning Tools

Many people have requested a source for the management tools that are used in the Project Based Learning plans on Teach 21. Here is the place. You will find rubrics, checklists, task management charts, learning logs and other documents that will help your PBL planning and delivery. Most of the documents were created by West Virginia teachers and used in the PBLs on Teach 21. Other documents were created and published on the Novel Approach PBL website, which is no longer on the internet. WV has been given permission by the creator of the site to continue using these PBL documents.

Google Search Starts To Reward Curators, Collections and Quality Lists

Google is now officially goig after the gathering and curation of the best list, collections and guides on just about any topic.  From the official Google Blog. Read it carefully: "Finally, the best answer to your question is not always a single entity, but a list or group of connected things. It’s quite challenging to pull these lists automatically from the web. But we’re now beginning to do just that.

So when you search for [california lighthouses], [hurricanes in 2008] or [famous female astronomers], we’ll show you a list of these things across the top of the page. And by combining our Knowledge Graph with the collective wisdom of the web, we can even provide more subjective lists like [best action movies of the 2000s] or [things to do in paris]."

News Discovery Tools: Slices for Twitter Organizes and Auto-Curates Your News Stream Into Categories | Cultura y Comunicación | Scoop.it

Slices is a news discovery app that allows you to find the news that interest you by "slicing" the Twitter timeline into topic-specific categories, making it much easier to find what you are looking for. From Pandodaily official review: "Slices offers 21 searchable categories – humor, technology, sports, and so on – that lead you to people and lists to follow. Included among those top-level categories is the “Live Events” option, which allows you to select an event – a football match, say, or a TV show – and follow Tweets from a curated list. Also of note: "...it synchronizes between mobile devices and the Slices website (slices.me), which means it knows which Tweets you’ve already read, no matter where you access it from.

[VIDEO] Michio Kaku: The Universe in a Nutshell

What if we could find one single equation that explains every force in the universe? Dr. Michio Kaku explores how physicists may shrink the science of the Big Bang into an equation as small as Einstein's "e=mc^2." Thanks to advances in string theory, physics may allow us to escape the heat death of the universe, explore the multiverse, and unlock the secrets of existence. While firing up our imaginations about the future, Kaku also presents a succinct history of physics and makes a compelling case for why physics is the key to pretty much everything.

This is good for explaining why it takes so much effort. But it still a subject matter expert, a passionate proponent, and the flexibility to incorporate methods and strategies for motivating.
Konstantinos Kalemis's comment, August 9, 2012 7:48 AM
Educators are often resistant to using computer technology in the classroom. Therefore, changing teachers’ attitudes is a key factor in fostering technology integration identified teachers’ attitudes as well as expertise in using computers as major factors in the adoption of computers in the classroom.
Although teachers’ attitudes were not historically considered in the introduction of computers into the classroom, many scholars now contend that future successful implementations will need to address teachers’ attitudes toward computers. According to Hignite and Echternacht (1992), it is critical that teachers possess both positive attitudes and adequate computer literacy skills to successfully incorporate technology into the classroom.
Several studies have suggested that attitudes are an important element in teaching children about computers. For example, Todman and Dick (1993) emphasized that an important factor affecting the quality of a child’s experience with computers in school may be the teacher’s attitude toward computers.
Based on an international study involving children, teachers, and computers, Pelgrum and Plomp concluded that:
Teachers are the main gatekeepers in allowing educational innovations to diffuse into the classrooms. Therefore one of the key factors for effecting an integration of computers in the school curriculum is adequate training of teachers in handling and managing these new tools in their daily practices.
Other studies have shown that student’ attitudes about school and learning are likely to affect student achievement and that appropriate teacher training in classroom computer use can be associated with higher student achievement.
It is generally accepted in the literature that appropriate training of teachers should include the ability to use the computer for personal use (i.e., word processing, grade book, etc.) and with students in the classroom.
The instructor who has learned to integrate technology into existing curricula may teach differently than the instructor who has received no such training.
The difference in classroom technique and the greater extent of technology use should have a positive effect on teacher and student attitudes toward information technology.
