Stories stimulate the brain. Metaphors like “He had leathery hands” rouse the sensory cortex. A whole new level of what it means to be carried away through reading. Same neurological regions are stimulated by metaphorical language through reading as by real-life encounter. Holds promise for helping us understand how reading can cultivate empathy.
