Cuba excited the world and Cubans by announcing last month that government-issued exit visa requirements were going to be dropped.

 

Writing in Foreign Policy, Cuban Yoani Sanchez says it ain't a golden age for free travel yet. The announced end of the "white card" program by which official permission is required to leave is just being recreated under a new name.

Pedro Pan activist honored for her legacy of service

Elisa Vilano Chovel was honored for her legacy of service, which included founding Operation Pedro Pan Group, a network of thousands of Cuban exiles whom the U.S. government and the Catholic Church ferried to Miami as children after Fidel Castro came to power in 1959.

Cuban authorities charged journalist Yaremis Flores with anti-state crimes on Wednesday in connection with news articles critical of the government, an arrest that sparked two waves of protests and detentions outside a Havana police station. The Committee to Protect Journalists called on authorities to drop the charges against Flores immediately.

Plan for Cuban landmark's rebirth sparks debate

Carlos Acosta's plan to inject life into the island's hidebound ballet scene by refurbishing Havana's crumbling dance school and turning it into an international center for culture and dance has ignited controversy for daring to reimagine the original architect's vision.

 

Acosta, who was in Havana this past week for meetings with Culture Ministry officials and to raise awareness about the project, was visibly frustrated by the flap over what he views as a way to give something back as he prepares to retire from London's Royal Ballet after a celebrated career.

Cuba and Haiti struggle to recover from Hurricane Sandy

There is scarcely any area of Santiago that was left unscathed. Photos show neighborhoods that look like trash piles of construction materials with wood beams tossed like toothpicks and tin roofs and tiles scattered on the ground. Walls of some homes lean at crazy angles or tilt toward streets still littered with huge trees.

Defendant Angel Carromero's trial wrapped up in the evening in Bayamo, about 500 miles (800 kilometers) east of the capital and near the site of the July 22 highway crash in which Oswaldo Paya and another dissident, Harold Cepero, died.

Several government opponents including noted blogger Yoani Sánchez were detained around this eastern city where the proceedings were taking place.

Independent journalist in Cuba faces three years in prison for "insulting" president | Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas

Police arrested Hablemos Press journalist Calixto Ramón Martínez on Sept. 16, and he remains under detention, reported the Cuban independent news agency.

 

Martínez was arrested at the Havana airport while investigating the disappearance of medications and equipment donated by the World Health Organization that were left out over night by authorities, according to Martí Noticias. Apparently, Martínez's reporting was viewed a slight against Castro. The journalist also reported on an outbreak of dengue and cholera two days before the Cuban government acknowledged the problem, Martí Noticias added.
