Cuba has several things that i had no clue about. I would of never thought that Cuba would have over 11 million people living there. I really thought there would be way less. Next is that the British captured it one year in the 1800's but lost it back to Spain. Another is that baseball and dominos are obsessions for Cubans!! And finally that Cuba has the lowest birth rate in the Western Hemisphere.

Tourist attractions

In cuba there is several places that attract tourist. One of those places is El Capitolio which has a big resemblance to the US capital building which was built in 1929. Next is the famous Cuban music which everyone loves to listen to. The music has a unique African and European style to it. Last may be small but a lot of people love them and thats the world famous Cuban cigars. Cuba has a cigar factory where you can see how they are made.

Important Holiday

Cuba is one of those places that has a ton of festivals and holidays that the Cubans celebrate. And one of those is the Havana Jazz Festival. This is celebrated in Feburary and is Cuba's most famous music festival. One Holiday that is really important to Cubans is Liberation. Liberation is described in the video above.

Typical food

There are several types of great cuban foods. Foods such as malanga, potatoes, boniatos, and yucca. Plus they have other starchy food like plantains, bananas, and rice. Not to mention the great dishes such as black beans and rice and slow roasted pork. But this is just to name a few like the video above.

Cuba has several types of crops that they grow just like everywhere. But Cuba has 2 main crops that really stand out from the rest. When everyone thinks of Cuba most people think of sugar cane because its been there main crop for years. But in recent years, tobacco has become an important part of their income. Tobacco has became a big part of the income because it grows better in Cuba's climate.

Como no mencionar el tabaco, los puros cubanos no tiene competencia en el mundo, aunque a largo plazo, según la tendencia actual de salud de la sociedad, se extinguirá. El campo tendrá que reconvertirse con la producción intensiva para la exportación de frutos tropicales.

Type of Government

Cuba has a different type of government than the US. Cuban right now is under a Communist Government.This is where the people of the country do not have the freedom to vote for what they want. Under Communist Government the people must follow whatever the leader or president of their country says. This is close to a dictatorship.

You buy it when you arrive in Cuba.The major legal currency for Cuba is the Cuban Convertible Peso, CUC. The Cuban dollar is equal to the US dollar.

Weather during this time of year in Cuba

Weather in Cuba this time of year is nothing like here in NC. The weather there is really the complete opposite. Cuba this time of year is pretty mild. It has temperatures in the low 60's and range up into the low 80's. Unlike NC where temperatures can be in the low 20's on average this time of year.

Important people

There are several Cubans who are Famous. One that i personally new was Gilbert Arenas. He is a profesional basketball player that played point guard for the Washington Wizards. Next was Aric Almirola who is a professional NASCAR racer. Finally the famous baseball star Rafael Palmeiro who had over 3000 hits and 500 homeruns in his MLB career.

Timeline

Cuba was discovered in 1492 by Christopher Columbus. Later on in the 1500's, Cuba was colonized by a Spanish leader Diego de Velazquez. In 1895, the US declared war on Spain. This lead to the US claiming Cuba. In 1953, Castro lead an unsuccessful revolution against Batista. Then in 1961 came the Cuban Missle Crisis.

Cuban has several types of religion throughout the country. The main religion in the country is Roman Catholic. According to world factbook, Roman Catholic is about 85% of the country's religion. The rest of the 15% is made up of Protestant, Jehovah's Witnesses, Jewish, and Santeria. All of this is since Castro took over.

Literacy Rate

The literacy rate in Cuba was extremely low or bad at one point and time. Through research, it showed it was as low as 60 to 76% in the late 1950's. Because of this the Castros made 1961 the year of education. This was a huge success and rose the literacy rate greatly over time. The rate today is estimated to be close to 99.8%.

President or leader

Cuban President Raul Castro was born on June 3, 1931, near Birán, Cuba. He is the brother of the long time president Fidel Castro. When Fidel took charge, Raul became the leader of armed forces. After Fidel declared not to run for president again after a 2 year illness Raul Castro became president of Cuba in February 2008. He is 81 years old now.

The population of Cuba is 11,224,321. The are many different types of ethinic groups. The population is made up of most mulatto which is 51% of the population. Next is white at 37%. Then it is black at 11%. Finally is chinese at 1% of the population.
