Analyzing The Top 2013 Kickstarter Campaigns By Category

Analyzing The Top 2013 Kickstarter Campaigns By Category | Crowdsourcing and Content Strategy | Scoop.it
We broke down the top Kickstarter campaigns by category. Here are the findings.
Sandrine Muller's insight:

Court the masses. More than 52% of backers came from donations under $50 in seven categories. Small pledges can build momentum and excitement by offering cheap ways to participate.

Donating actively is not required. While it is probably preferable to support fellow creators, many raised money without participating heavily in the Kickstarter community. Journalims creators were the stingiest, only backing one campaign, while comic creators were the most generous and supported 17 campaigns.

Eyewire: A Computer Game to Map the Eye

Eyewire: A Computer Game to Map the Eye | Crowdsourcing and Content Strategy | Scoop.it
MIT neuroscientist Sebastian Seung (now at Princeton) invented the game to help him make a map of the cells in the mammalian retina. A year later, he says the game is producing valuable science.
Sandrine Muller's insight:

Instead of fighting aliens, the players have to pick out specific cells in a high resolution picture of tissue from a part of the eye called the retina and color them in. The trick to scoring point in the game is to only color the parts of the image that are nerve cells.

Over 120,000 citizen neural scientists from 140 countries signed up to play the online game.

Brands Need to Stop Trying to Play Hero

Brands Need to Stop Trying to Play Hero | Crowdsourcing and Content Strategy | Scoop.it

One of the biggest mistakes brands make in storytelling is to play the role of the hero. Today we must make consumers the hero while we get better at being their mentor. What’s making the brand-as-hero approach less effective? Consumers. They’ve become more sophisticated, resourceful and now have higher expectations. Illustration: Miguel Montaner

Sandrine Muller's insight:

When the goal is to mentor, involve and participate, the old terminology of “targeting an audience” sets up the wrong premise from the start. These are the folks who create much of your content, hold powerful influence and actually control their own interaction within your experience space. So it will be helpful to find a more accurate and empowering reference than one-directional terms like “target” or “user.”

Nokia - The Zoom Project

Nokia - The Zoom Project | Crowdsourcing and Content Strategy | Scoop.it

The #ZoomProject is all about redefining the way we seek out and hear about the news and stories that surround us. It's news according to you and everyone else. It's the stories behind the big corporate news streams.

We want to Zoom in on all the interesting stories, and we believe that nothing is more powerful than a picture to do that, but we can't do it without you, let us know where and which stories you want to see by using the hashtag #ZoomProject.

Sandrine Muller's insight:

Possibility to ask for a picture via twitter to 6 reporters depending on where they are. UX is a bit confusing but the idea of an "unreachable query" to be satisfied is appealing.
