Perhaps the future of journalism lies not in the art of a highly skilled orator but instead in the skills of a facilitator of stories who is able to ascertain one truth by taking the voices of many and vastly enriching the media we consume.
We need quality reporting so that we can make the right decisions about our future, and about hugely important issues such as the economy, ecology, education, elder-care, energy use, the environment — and those are just the issues that begin with ‘e’. The problem is we don’t have a value recovery mechanism for quality journalism. Clicks are the currency for most of today’s media but a click is a click regardless of the quality of the content it surfaces.
American Public Media provides journalists with the tools and training to tap our growing Network of more than 150,000 sources, engage their own audiences, and produce high-quality journalism. Using their industry-leading platform, journalists and citizens reach beyond pundits, PR professionals and polemics to inform themselves and each other, strengthening the communities they serve.
Almost a year ago, I proposed that Twitter double its character limit from 140 to 280. The microblogging site long ago outgrew its original purpose as a platform for simple status updates.
Unlike more traditional notions of "citizen journalism," crowdsourcing does not ask readers to become anything more than what they've always been: eyewitnesses to their daily lives. They need not learn advanced reporting skills, journalism ethics or how to be a better writer. It doesn't ask readers to commit hours of their lives in work for a publisher with little or no financial compensation. Nor does it allow any one reader's work to stand its own, without the context of many additional points of view.
In a discussion about his use of Twitter as a reporting tool, NPR strategist Andy Carvin made some interesting points about the value of crowdsourced journalism -- including the importance of being transparent about the process, and the virtues of...

Citizen journalism may or may not be true journalism; in fact a lot of it is not. But it is a concept that has been embraced by the open nature of the web.

LONDON. July 26, 2012. Participation, collaboration, working together as a community – these are fundamental cornerstones to African societies. They are also fundamental to the open source movement and to its latest media incarnation – crowdsourced journalism. Our Big Picture Journalism Project aims to strengthen African journalists’ capacities to use crowdsourcing approaches in modern newsgathering.
After dozens of fake bylines have now been discovered at four U.S. newspapers, at least two news organizations have said they will stop using Journatic, the hyperlocal news content provider responsible for the false bylines, reported Poynter.

Twitter is showing the way in terms of innovation in the crowdsourced journalism realm. Here are 10 best practices that can be applied to other crowdsourced journalism channels. "Listen and respond to others", "Seek out the views of users" these seem to be applicable to (and in fact coming from good practices in) face to face communication.

Some of the media industry's leading "data journalists" have published a crowdsourced handbook for the practice of data-oriented journalism. As many of us know, one of the big areas of focus over the past year has been “big data” — the idea that there can be immense value in sifting out patterns in the massive quantities of user data and other information that many companies generate. Consider, then, the value in finding patterns in the sea of news-related information we are immersed in every day of our lives. This past weekend, at the 2012 International Journalism Festival in Italy, the Data Journalism Handbook was unveiled - a free ebook that could be a useful resource for anyone who works with, and writes about, data. The ebook is free under a Creative Commons license. .

To paraphrase Mark Twain, reports of the death of newspapers are somewhat exaggerated. But traditional media is experiencing the “perfect storm” of declining circulations, collapsing advertising revenues and seismic changes in the way news is produced and consumed.
