Seth's Blog: The truth about the war for talent

Seth's Blog: The truth about the war for talent | Innovative Marketing and Crowdfunding | Scoop.it
It's more of a skirmish, actually. Plenty of recruiters and those in HR like to talk about engaging in a war for talent, but to be truthful, most of it is about finding good enough people at an acceptable rate...
Marty Koenig's insight:

Attitude, yes. Give me an employee with good talent with a great attitude, a fire in the belly, and she will add value like no other. Give me great talent and a great attitude, and you have a star. But wait....that's not the whole story. Seth left out important considerations:

An employee with both a great attitude and talent won't matter unless they are personally aligned in their head, heart, and soul with the values of the organization. Then, if the company culture values its principles as the way all decisions are made, the employee will have the right framework to make the right choices. Fundamentally, under the backdrop of attitude and talent, that makes a super star employee.

Values and principles are the choice of company leadership. Once set, they don't change. If the company hires people who aren't totally in sync, they are doing the employee and their organization a disservice.

ASPEL Editor's curator insight, January 14, 2014 5:01 AM

Often times we are faced with the temptation to reach for a fast (and potentially wrongheaded) solution. However, a good strategic leader holds steady, synthesizing information from many sources before developing a viewpoint. If your leader lacks some level of peripheral vision, it can leave your company vulnerable to rivals who detect and act on ambiguous signals. We need strategic leaders who will foster open dialogue, build trust and engage key stakeholders, especially when views diverge. Find out how to become the strategic leader your company needs!

Today most startups are trying to ressegment existing markets or create new markets. How do you diagram that? What if the basis of competition in market creation is really the intersection of multiple existing markets? Or what if the markets may not exist and you are creating one? Today it's all about being visual.

To Persuade People, Tell Them a Story

To Persuade People, Tell Them a Story | Innovative Marketing and Crowdfunding | Scoop.it

"Paul Smith had 20 minutes to sell the CEO of Procter & Gamble, and his team of managers, on new market-research techniques for which Mr. Smith's department wanted funding. As associate director of P&G's PG -0.39% market research, Mr. Smith had spent three weeks assembling a concise pitch with more than 30 PowerPoint slides.

On the day of the meeting, CEO A.G. Lafley entered the room, greeted everybody and turned his back to the screen. He then stared intently at Mr. Smith throughout the entire presentation, not once turning to look at a slide.

"I felt like maybe I hadn't done a very good job because he wasn't looking at my slides like everyone else," says Mr. Smith, who also noticed that the other managers didn't seem very engaged. "It didn't occur to me until later that he did that because he was more interested in what I had to say than in what my slides looked like."

Via Gregg Morris, Karen Dietz
Marty Koenig's insight:

Story telling is becoming the #1 thing people and companies are doing. Marketing is King and telling a compelling, personal account is a talent very few people have. Slideware is not the story. YOU are the story. Learn it and apply it. Or het some help.

At best, your PPT slides can only SUPPORT your message. The more refined or rarified your audiences get, the more refined or rarified your slide deck needs to get. They're 'paying' for your professional advice/opinion, not your PPT ability.

Great comment by @Marc Kneepkens on his Rescoop to his Competitive Edge feed:

Marc Kneepkens's insight:

The 'digital experience' is changing marketing. People still respond emotionally to an 'increasing' numer of stimuli. The art of getting a response must adapt to the new media. Every day new tools and new ways to reach the client appear.

Successful companies understand this. Companies such as Google, Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, focus new ways of reaching out to the comsumers' not so new emotional respons. Reaching out has grown into a huge "new" phenomena called social media.

Playing our new social media games well and understanding them will mean success or failure.

Marc Kneepkens's curator insight, November 22, 2013 8:28 AM

The 'digital experience' has changed marketing completely. People still respond emotionally to the 'increasing' amount of stimuli. The art of getting a response has to adapt to the new media, every day new tools and new ways to reach the client appear. Successful companies understand this very well, companies such as Google, Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, and more. Focusing on one or more aspects of these new ways of reaching out to the not so new responses of comsumers has grown into huge new phenomena, the social media. Playing these well and understanding them well will mean success or failure.

If your startup marketing strategy includes getting press coverage, you should read this. And also this.

But I also encourage you to think whether that's actually something you need, how badly you need it and for what reasons. If the answer to the latter is "to get traction and grow my user base", that's probably wrong as I explained here.

How to Make the Perfect Kickstarter Video, Step One: Tell Your Story

How to Make the Perfect Kickstarter Video, Step One: Tell Your Story | Innovative Marketing and Crowdfunding | Scoop.it

While Kickstarter doesn’t require videos, Kickstarter says that campaigns with a video succeed at a much higher rate (50% vs. 30%) and make more money. A great video could be the difference between getting your idea funded and changing the world or filing it away with your half-finished novel and SNL audition tape.

But how do you make a great video with no experience, no equipment and likely no real budget?
