Backers who supported Oculus Rift on Kickstarter are now angered that the company has sold to Facebook. What do crowdfunding projects owe their backers?

Oculus VR chief Palmer Luckey turned to Kickstarter to raise $2.4 million to create prototypes for the Oculus Rift headset. Billed as "the first truly immersive virtual reality headset for video games," the crowdfunding campaign attracted more than 9,500 backers. But now that the company has been sold to Facebook for more than $2 billion, some of the backers feel duped.

Countless backers of Oculus Rift vented their frustrations on the Oculus Rift Kickstarter. 

"I am saddened that the independent dream that was Oculus is now selling out to Facebook," wrote one of the project's backers. "Honestly, I feel that every single donor should get a "kickback/refund" from that $2 Billion (they'd still have plenty left over!) to put towards a Kickstarter project that isn't a masquerading golddigger. The whole idea of Kickstarter is to support people in making the world a better place through original ideas and technology, not selling out to corporate America. We already have enough politicians that do that - and you see how good that's worked out for the country. A shame and disappointment to everyone who backed Oculus; it's a damn shame."

It's reminiscent of what happened when Zach Braff's Kickstarter-funded "Wish I Was Here" sold big at Sundance and some of the film's backers complained that he had forgotten the little folks who helped the film get made.

You don't own anything if you pledge $$,  so there does need to be some up front regulations for Crowdfunding before you actually invest

Crowdfunding versus Amazon: Weber Grill. BUT WHY?

Find the biggest selection of products from Weber with the lowest prices. Shop online for mowers, grills, garden tools, generators, snow blowers and more at Amazon.com

OK, this has very little to do with crowdfunding. OK maybe a little. Or maybe a lot. What part of content or product marketing is not crowdfunding? What part selling anything to anyone that will pay money, not crowdfunding? When the crowd chimes in with reviews, when the descriptions and value porposition is better than any other anywhere, when you differentiate your product against all competitors...you will succeed. Just like in crowdfunding. 


If you look at this product, there is nothing compelling in the "above the fold" description. To me it looks like every other grill I've seen online. OK, it is a Weber, but how am I supposed to know if this product is THAT MUCH BETTER than, say, a $299 Charbroil at Walmart? 


All it says about the grill is the WHAT. Just the features. It talks about square inches of cooking area. It talks about the rotisserie (does anyone even use those any more?). Nothing about the WHY and certainly zero compelling information about the benefits and why anyone would want a grill like this. 


In this listing there are no reviews, so I can't even tell if anyone likes or hates it. Then lower on the page, where there is an opportunity to litterally talk about the sizzle, to tell stories about how this grill changed the lives of people, to use action words and a video that makes me stay on this listing.  


I do get a lot of extras that I really don't care about - and I really feel like Amazon just wants to upsell, upsell, upsell. I'm not so into that. They say at lease half-dozen time what the model number is, just begging me to go find the same exact product at a cheaper site. Or maybe I am willing to pay a little more for the same product if I get the priviledge of folks who care about me, care about my wants, and take the time and energy to engage with me in a conversation. 


There is a total lack of any kind of "experience" or "tribe" or "loyalty" that makes we want to hit the Buy Now button. 


Then they go on th cannibalize the sales process, and Amazon shows me four other, competing grills. How about I just bounce and go find a site that seems to care enough about the buyer, and the buying experience. 


So how is this different than your crowdfunding campaign? If it's not, then good luck. You'll be about as successful as this listing on Amazon. You'll talk all about you, like Amazon does over and over and over again on this page. You will talk only about the WHAT, and not give me the simple courtesy of a story, or the WHY I should spend that kind of money on this grill.


Am I wrong here? Who do you know would pay that much for a grill? Is Weber really that much better? Is their brand promise a Tiffany's equivalent? Let me know if I am out of line here. 


A crowdfunding campaign has to go so much further than this listing, and so much further than 95% of the Kickstarter or Indiegogo listings.

It goes without saying that the Internet is full of immensely powerful tools and platforms — Indiegogo itself is an indication of this.
Marty Koenig's insight:

People keep saying "I don't have any money, that's why I'm doing a crowdfunding campaign.". Let me tell you, that's a tough road. Many of these tools below cost some money. You'll want to plan for that. Get a job first, or have your friends and family five you $1,000 so you can have a small chance at a successful campaign. 


I moderated a panel last week called "Crowdfunding Successes" with four successful Kickstarter raises. The very 1st question I asked the panel was, "What is the one thing you will do different next time?" Every one of them said "Next time we will get more exposure, do better PR and better marketing. We learned that the right way is to pay someone to do that instead of trying to do all that ourselves."

I love Marty's comments because he's so spot on!

We often hear about the 'Million Dollar Wins' but we don't hear that they spent $50k - 150k in a media campaign in order to do so.

There are many extolling the 'virtues' of Crowdfunding.   There are many more who claim they are experts on the matter.   We hear stories every day of stories of great things.    What we don't hear, is that there are just as many failures.   The famed Kickstarter project has 85,000 smartwatch orders to fill ... $10 Million down the tube, no product to ship.

This is a common occurrance in Crowdfunding.  In a 'revovering econony', we need less crowdfunding - sucking money out of circulation - and more resources such as www.GlobalCEOspace.com which for over 25 years, has been helping Entrepreneurs succeed.

Subtitle should be: "How I walked away from $125,000." 


. I have coached dozens on exactly how to avoid failure for a year now. But first, I have to wonder if they are solving a problem that people really don't have. Ok, I can see controlling the Christmas lights, but its not for that. I can see controlling the lights in the home theatre, but that problem is already solved. I can see controlling the lights in the workshop, but I already have a switch for that. T%hey talk about "the experience" which I guess equates to the geeky cool factor, but again. what is the real huge problem they are solving for a huge amount of people. 


I think it's technology for the sake of technology, and it does not surprise me that they did not meet their Kickstarter goal. Did they consider an IndieGogo campaign or some other platform that does not have so much limitiations as Kickstarter (who, BTW keeps tightening the clamps on restrictions, making it harder and harder to run a successful campaign). 


I do like the "Beyond Kickstarter" benefits, which most people don't realize. They just fail and go away. These guys are on top of it and leveraging all the Kickstarter brought to them. that's what I love about crowdfunding - it gets the crowd's juices flowing, gets them excited about the product or cause and compells people to participate.
