But the funding will often be private: things like venture capital and crowd-funding. I know those are very important, but sometimes they don't work as well here in Europe as in the US. And I think there's a lot we could do to change that. An EU-wide approach to venture capital could ensure more critical mass, and a better chance of success. And we can make crowd-funding more visible, and more accessible: so people are more aware of not just the funding itself, but also the vibrant start-up culture it supports

Right now we're reading about how the J.O.B.S. act is going to change crowdfunding in the United States, but I think it's worth pointing out we actually have a head start on equity crowdfunding in Northern Europe. The countries in the ArcticStartup region have their own legislative quirks, but equity crowdfunding is here, there's no doubt about it. And it will be very interesting to follow what happens to the funding landscape as the public consciousness catches up and more deals are run.

The European Crowdfunding Network (ECN) and European Crowdfunding Association (ECA) have decided to join forces to create a truly European body that will lobby, promote and foster a more favourable and transparent environment for crowdfunding in Europe. Both organisations believe that the emergent European crowdfunding industry will be better served by a single representative organisation.

NESTA, the UK Innovation Foundation, has released the ”The Venture Crowd“, a new report on crowdfunding as an investment tool. The report reveals that in 2011 alone, €1.5 billion was raised through crowdfunding for projects and businesses in need of funds. Amongst the different types of crowdfunding: Donation, Reward, Lending and Equity, the latter is on the rise as a fundraising mechanism for European startups.

CONSOB, the Italian equivalent of the Securities and Exchange Commission,  published the Regulation implementing Article 30 of the Law Decree n. 179/2012 (Decreto Crescita), which introduced equity crowdfunding in the Italian Trattato Unico Finanziario (Financial Services Act). The regulation is now open for public consultation until 30 April. These are the key features you need to know.

Back in October crowdfunding site Kickstarter made an international move by launching in the UK and allowing people to enter payment info directly on Kickstarter in pounds sterling, rather than via Amazon Payments. They also hinted at other countries for expansion. However, Indiegogo, the large, more general crowdfunding platform is going one better by launching in the UK, Germany, France, and Canada simultaneously.
