Neil Young Reaches 800,000 PonoMusic Kickstarter Goal in 1 Day ... | Crowdfunding Sound | Scoop.it
Per Kickstarter rules, project organizers keep any funds raised past the required amount. As Kickstarter notes on their FAQ, "Most of the time, what seems like 'extra' money isn't extra at all. Ten times the funding often means ...
ASPJ's insight:

PonoMusic is the most funded Technology campaing in the kickstarter history. Started by rock legend Neil Young, PonoMusic is a new high resolution music system. It involves a digital music player and a digital music store, both of which work with high resolution audio formats, providing the listener with the highest audio quality possible within the digital realm.

It is impossible to say if this kickstart campaign owns its success to its endorsers or testimonials; PonoMusic's Kickstarter campaing video features testimonials from numerous music superstars like Tom Petty, Elvis Costello, David Crosby, Eddie Vedder, Rick Rubin, Jack White, Arcade Fire, etc, etc, etc. Pono already reached 460% of its goal, for a total of 3.5+ million dollars with still 30 days to go. It is an exciting new technology that could either change the way we listen to (and produce and record) music or just remain as another snobbishly exclusive tech gadget.

If you are an entrepreneur, never underestimate the power of a passionate fan base.

ASPJ's insight:

A drummer and various drum kits, packed into one convenient pedal. The BeatBuddy campaign on indiegogo had surpassed its 75,000 $ goal in the first 24 hours. Even though, I personally don't see this product as a professional production tool, it is a live performance, aid and a music performance enjoyment gadget that very much proofs the power of crowdfunding for the music tools development industry.

Successes and Failures of Crowdfunding

Successes and Failures of Crowdfunding | Crowdfunding Sound | Scoop.it
Crowdfunding is great for startups, but not always great for all parties involved. Check out the infographic below presented by Top-Business-Degrees.net to learn about some of the biggest successes and failures in crowdfunding.

Via Thomas Faltin
ASPJ's insight:

Just to also show there is a negative side to every story. This article speaks about 5 crowdfunding important successes and, most importantly, 3 alleged crowdfunding scams. It is very logical that failures occur in this new business model, and scams were inevitable; however, this negative experiences have forced a debate in which crowdfunding sites have decided to be more strict and careful about the way they conduct business. This is still a business model in the making that needs to be treated with the attention and care that an "economical newborn" would need.

Review: Keith McMillen QuNeo 3D Pad Controller

Review: Keith McMillen QuNeo 3D Pad Controller | Crowdfunding Sound | Scoop.it

The Kickstarter-approved, open-source friendly and multitouch-sensitive QuNeo has captured the imagination of music producers.

Via DJing
ASPJ's insight:

A "game-changer" for music production technology, QuNeo Multi-Touch Pad Controller has been available for more than a year now, but is still one of the most innovative pieces of hardware in the market. Designed by a small MIDI/music production tech company called Keith McMillen Instruments, it reached 1106% of its 15k $ pledge on Kickstarter for a total of 165,914$ on January 2012. It is currently considered as one of the top controllers in its category, competing with stablished MIDI controller developers such as Akai and Novation.

Personally, I own QuNeo's "technological  grandfather" Keith McMillen's Soft Step, a lesser known MIDI/USB pedalboard which was the first to introduce QuNeo's Multi-touch pads technology, and I have to say it's a marvelous  musicianship tool, and a fine piece of hardware with very few drawbacks. However, QuNeo definitely changed the game, transforming a small startup like KMI into an important player in the music production tools sector. This controller is changing the way music is made, all thanks to one successful crowdfunding campaign.

Vectr - Open Source 3D Sensing Gesture Controller

Close 3D position sensing for analog modular synths using an electric field. The Kickstarter campaign is already successful 3 days before closing.

Via Roald Baudoux
ASPJ's insight:

Vectr is another innovative music production tool. A true 3D position sensing interface designed to control parameters on synthesizers and other electronic instruments and audio processors. It is a lesser-known recent Kickstarter project, but still a successful one. I think the most important aspect of this scoop is the innovation this product is bringing to the "music production table", as it offers a whole new way to generate and modify sound in the studio and on the stage; and it is indeed very interesting for anyone involved in audio to witness that such bold, avant-garde products are being successfully brought to reality thanks to crowdfunding.

How Videogame Rockers Anamanaguchi Became the Biggest Kickstarter Act Since Amanda Palmer

How Videogame Rockers Anamanaguchi Became the Biggest Kickstarter Act Since Amanda Palmer | Crowdfunding Sound | Scoop.it
Ana•mana•guchi.

ASPJ's insight:

This scoop topic wouldn't be complete without a "regular" crowdfunded recording artist project. Independent chiptune/rock band from New York, Anamanaguchi had one of the most bold, fun and successful kickstarter campaigns for a music album (or 'more than an album' as they called it).

The band had already spent around 3 years recording their "endless fantasy" album without the help of any record label, and then decided to launch it through kickstarter, pledging for funds not only to recoup their recording's investment, but to also produce merchandise, videoclips, buy equipment for their live shows and tours, amongst other things. A very inspiring campaign indeed, setting new artistic standards for the recording artist's crowdfunding crowds (weird wordplay intended)
