My crowdfunding concern - The Term Sheet: Fortune's deals blogTerm Sheet | CrowdFunding Guide | Scoop.it
The revolution will not be crowdfunded.
CrowdFundingGuide's insight:

Well, kinda not getting it. With the S&P 500 totally oversold and real jobs only inching back into existence, "charitable capitalism," what the rest of us call "social impact investing" is the smart route to a future of any sort. That said, did Y-Combinator allow this many crowdfunding startups into its program to help speed the shake-out of the ecosystem?

Now closing in on 600 platforms globally, could we be approaching user overwhelm?

Is the deployment of live crowdfuding events--like the one at Launch, another in Brooklyn, there's a music festival gathering, and One Spark is coming down the pipeline--are those early warnings that people want more intimacy in their donor experience than a more "frictionless experience at the site of giving?"

What's your two cents?

Will Angel investors and VCs get kicked out of the picture or will there be a glut of new businesses unable to get their second rounf of funding?

SEC Group Urges Creation of Exchange for Small Companies

SEC Group Urges Creation of Exchange for Small Companies | CrowdFunding Guide | Scoop.it
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission should urge the creation of a new stock exchange limited to small companies that have trouble raising capital in public markets, an agency panel recommended today.
CrowdFundingGuide's insight:

Just back from a conference called StartUpsEverywhereElse.co. It was clear that many of the entreprenuers present were very interested in getting cash fast, but cash that was reliable, with few string attached. Though on the surface, the proposal in this article looks like an end run against crowdfunding, it well may turn out to be the first step a new business takes before they launch a more sophisticated crowdfunding campaign.

Perhaps we could think of the startup funding cycle like this:

  1. Alpha funding in SEC small co exchange
  2. Beta funding of a particular product in an open crowdfunding campaign
  3. 1.0 Funding in a crowdvesting platform, offering equity
  4. Series A funding from VCs once they have proven themselves as a company
  5. Series B to scale

This route would significantly decrease risk at every stage of the game for each "investor," whether they expect just a gift, a mention, or a slice of the action. A startup following this trajectory would be much more likely to raise a few rounds with VCs--a significant amount of the due diligence has been done already. As Mason Estep of @StandOffer pointed out, VCs love crowdfunding because it helps them to better gauge the likelihood for success of an idea.

What do you think? Could this be the new way to get your business off the ground? --CFG
