Just When TVs Were Getting Smart, Chromecast Will Make Them Dumb Again

Just When TVs Were Getting Smart, Chromecast Will Make Them Dumb Again | cross pond high tech | Scoop.it

By now, you've no doubt heard and/or read something about Google's clever new Chromecast HDMI device, a $35 media streamer introduced yesterday (Google's intro/demo video embedded below). Chromecast has a lot going for it, and could well become Google's first big hit product in the living room. If it does, there will be at least one significant consequence: instead of TVs continuing to become "Smart TVs," they are going to become dumb yet again. This would be a huge blow to TV manufacturers who have labored to convince consumers to spend extra to derive the benefits a Smart TV offers.

Inspiring talk by Bruce Schneier on how security enables trust in society #USI2013 | cross pond high tech | Scoop.it

Video of a great talk given by BT's Schneier at USI conference on June 25th 2013 in Paris.

"

Society doesn't work without trust

Human being is the only species with trust. We trust hundreds of strangers without even thinking about it.

How do we enable trust?

How does security enable trust. How do we induce trust?

Trusting friends is about who they are as persons.

Trusting strangers is about their actions

Trust: confidence, consistence, compliancy. It's about cooperation.

We trust people, companies and systems

We trust systems to produce expected behaviors

All complex ecosystems require cooperation. In any cooperative system, there is a way to subvert the system for personal interests.

These are called defectors in game theory. They are parasites. They can survive if they are contained. If too many parasites the body dies and the parasites die too.

Society doesn't work if everybody steals. Security can be defined as a tax on the honests.

How Technology Is Destroying Jobs | MIT Technology Review | cross pond high tech | Scoop.it
That robots, automation, and software can replace people might seem obvious to anyone who’s worked in automotive manufacturing or as a travel agent. But Brynjolfsson and McAfee’s claim is more troubling and controversial. They believe that rapid technological change has been destroying jobs faster than it is creating them, contributing to the stagnation of median income and the growth of inequality in the United States. And, they suspect, something similar is happening in other technologically advanced countries.
Philippe J DEWOST's insight:
Automation is reducing the need for people in many jobs. Are we facing a future of stagnant income and worsening inequality?

Amazon Beat Out IBM And Won A $600 Million Cloud Computing Contract With The CIA | cross pond high tech | Scoop.it

The tech industry maxim that "no one ever got fired for buying IBM" is a testament to how Big Blue has been the gold standard in computing services for decades.

But IBM faces an unlikely challenger in Amazon.com Inc, the e-commerce retail giant that is becoming a force in the booming business of cloud computing, even winning backing from America's top spy agency.

After years of being dismissed as a supplier of online computer services to startups and small businesses, Amazon Web Services (AWS) beat out International Business Machines this year to snag a $600 million contract with the Central Intelligence Agency.

Philippe J DEWOST's insight:

AWS generates at least $2 billion a year in revenue now from a total pie of more than $60 billion, according to analysts who expect that to quintuple to more than $10 billion in coming years, partly driven by higher government cloud spending.

Withings raises a massive $30 Million round and welcomes Bpifrance onboard | cross pond high tech | Scoop.it

Health gadget company Withings will announce in a few minutes a new funding round from Bpifrance, Idinvest Partners, 360 Capital Partners and existing investor Ventech. Out of the $30 million, $15 million comes fromBpifrance, the newly created public entity — BPI means Public Investment Bank in French. It is one of its first traditional VC deal.

Withings is perhaps best known for its series of smart scales and body analyzers (along with curious one-off devices like a baby monitor), but the company has recently decided to take a stab at creating yet another sort of fitness gadget: a wearable activity tracker. Calling that particular market crowded is putting it awfully mildly. Devices from the likes of Nike, Jawbone, and Fitbit have put an approachable face on the quantified self movement and have garnered plenty of attention from press and health-conscious consumers.
