Apple supplier Foxconn freezes hiring at largest plant

Apple supplier Foxconn freezes hiring at largest plant | cross pond high tech | Scoop.it

"Due to an unprecedented rate of return of employees following the Chinese New Year holiday compared to years past, our company has decided to temporarily slow down our recruitment process," the company said in a statement.

"This action is not related to any single customer and any speculation to the contrary is false and inaccurate."

Like other Chinese contract manufacturers, Foxconn, the trading name of Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd, relies on a large number of migrant laborers from across the country who journey home for the most important holiday of the year. Many do not make it back to work, but Foxconn spokesman Louis Woo said this year they saw as many as 97 percent of employees return.

Philippe J DEWOST's insight:

The return rate mentioned by Foxcon is not about iPhones, it is about workers...

The first Open Compute Europe Summit took place in Paris on October 30 & 31st, 2014, on Ecole Polytechnique's campus in Palaiseau.

The european tech scene is catching up on OCP, with pioneers such as Telecity or Enter.it , and is federated by Splitted Desktop System's Jean-Marie Verdun.

Here is the keynote I delivered at government's request, explaining why France is Open (to) Compute (following my April post - in french).

Philippe J DEWOST's insight:

Apple has announced a new partnership with Cisco that will result in a “fast lane” for enterprise customers using iOS devices on Cisco’s networks and push iPhone and iPad into Cisco’s enterprise environments. At a joint event today, Tim Cook reportedly said Apple is “all in on the enterprise” while calling the Cisco deal “the Holy Grail” of partnerships.

With Apple’s support, Cisco will deliver experiences specially optimized for iOS across mobile, cloud, and premises-based collaboration tools such as Cisco Spark, Cisco Telepresence and Cisco WebEx in order to deliver seamless team collaboration and reinvent the meeting experience.

The Cisco partnership adds to Apple’s increasing effort at targeting business with iPhones and iPads. Last year Apple established a connection with IBM that has resulted in several dedicated enterprise apps for iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. Apple is also said to be working with over 40 companies to make the iPad a better tool for business.

As we’ve seen with the IBM MobileFirst partnership, which started out focused on creating enterprise apps for iOS and creating AppleCare support for enterprise customers and has since vastly expanded, the Cisco announcement may potentially be the first of many similar collaborations to come. Also like the IBM deal, Apple’s partnership with Cisco is a healthy precursor to the rumored iPad Pro, which is expected to be a hit among enterprise users. Interesting, Cisco originally backed Android in the tablet space with its own Cius business tablet years ago, but ended the effort in favor of a BYOD program thanks largely to the iPad’s success.

Silenced For 2 Years By Volkswagen, Car Hackers Reveal Their Paper On Security Hole

Silenced For 2 Years By Volkswagen, Car Hackers Reveal Their Paper On Security Hole | cross pond high tech | Scoop.it

Two years ago, a trio of researchers were preparing to present the findings of their investigation into the security of car immobilisers used by luxury cars.

The way these devices are supposed to work is like this:

You sit in your car, and push the “Start” button. The engine should remain immobilised, and refuse to start, unless a cryptographic algorithm on the key’s RFID transponder correctly verifies the identity of the key being used to start the motor.

If you don’t have the right key on you, the car should refuse to start. The car thief, hopefully, walks away in frustration.

The researchers, a lecturer in Computer Science at the University of Birmingham in the UK, and two colleagues from the Radboud University in the Netherlands, found a problem with the Megamos Crypto system used on some cars, and believed that the public had a right to know about the security weakeness.

The research paper planned for presentation at the USENIX Security Symposium in August 2013, would describe both the algorithm and the weakness within it.

However, their hopes of making the flaws public were dashed by the UK’s High Court of Justice, who ordered that the talk should not be presented and that key parts of their research must not be published.

The court’s concern was that the research by Flavio Garcia, Baris Ege and Roel Verdult would mean “that car crime would be facilitated”, as criminals could exploit the security weakness to steal expensive cars such as Audis, Bentleys, Porsches, and Lamborghinis.

And who had asked the court to silence the researchers? Car manufacturing giant Volkswagen and French defence group Thales.

Now, in August 2015, the researchers’ paper is finally being presented at the USENIX security conference in Washington DC, two years later than originally planned, detailing how the Megamos Crypto system – an RFID transponder that uses a Thales-developed algorithm to verify the identity of the ignition key being used to start their motors – can be subverted.

Sense is a simple system that tracks your sleep behavior, monitors the environment of your bedroom and reinvents the alarm.

Sense combines the insight of your sleep patterns with the data of the environment in your bedroom, including noise, light, temperature, humidity and particles in the air.

With Sense's Smart Alarm, it can even wake you up in the morning at the right point in your sleep cycle, to avoid that groggy feeling we all hate so much.

Philippe J DEWOST's insight:

My Sense has finally arrived ! (with the now usual 9 months Kickstarter delay) - Remember that they raised $2.4 M against a $100k target...

While the unboxing experience was made slightly complicated by how tight the additional sleep pill box was closed, the overall setup is a pure bliss and the product finish is amazing. Sense may be paired with several "sleep pills" that you clip on the pillow and allow to monitor your sleep as well as your spouse's without interferences other than snoring :-)

(The remarkable and fluid phone UI has 2 slight glitches

1/ when setting the alarm tone, it doesn't play in on the Sense (just on your phone) hence making you to guess whether the Sense has or not sound capabilities
2/ in Europe, would have appreciated a temperature in degrees Celsius not Fahrenheit)

Facebook just rolled out P2P payments all over the US | cross pond high tech | Scoop.it

Mobile payment transactions may not be the standard yet but there are a lot of people who prefer this method simply because of its ease and convenience. Others are simply worried about privacy and security but developers like Facebook know how to make an app secure all the time. Frequent updates and releases make sure the app is  always in tip-top shape.

The latest update to Facebook Messenger brings a new feature that allows person-to-person (P2P) mobile payments. The P2P payment on Facebook Messenger only requires a debit card or credit card (Visa or Mastercard) so you can send money right away to a contact. To send an amount, open up a conversation, click on the dollar ($) icon, enter amount when prompted, and then click 'Pay'. Amount will be sent immediately to the other person who will receive the money on his or her own checking account.
