So much for a BlackBerry cloud: RIM sells NewBay to Synchronoss

So much for a BlackBerry cloud: RIM sells NewBay to Synchronoss | cross pond high tech | Scoop.it
A year ago RIM bought NewBay, presumably to join Apple and Google in the cloud storage and synch arena. Now it's selling NewBay at a steep discount to Synchronoss.
Philippe J DEWOST's insight:

How Synchronoss will integrate NewBay, Miyowa and FusionOne is also a mystery...

The PC Industry Implodes Before Our Eyes

The PC Industry Implodes Before Our Eyes | cross pond high tech | Scoop.it

It's ugly out there for the traditional PC makers. IDC says PC sales fell 14 percent in the first quarter on a year-over-year basis. That's worse than its forecast of a 7.7 percent drop.

This is the worst quarter for PC industry since 1994 when IDC started tracking sales. So, that pretty much makes it the worst quarter in history.

IDC blames Microsoft's Windows 8 operating system for alienating consumers. The new tile-based interface is too weird for consumers, says IDC.

Instead of buying new laptops or desktops, people are buying tablets and smartphones which serve as good-enough alternatives.

Philippe J DEWOST's insight:

More than a paradigm shift...

The Ratio Of PCs To Macs Sold Has Fallen To Levels Not Seen Since The 1990s

The Ratio Of PCs To Macs Sold Has Fallen To Levels Not Seen Since The 1990s | cross pond high tech | Scoop.it

It's important to note that this chart only shows PCs vs. Macs--full-fledged computers that Apple actually doesn't sell that many of. (Mac sales are growing nicely, in stark contrast to the PC market, but they aren't blowing any doors off).

If the chart included sales of iPhones and iPads, the ratio of PCs sold to Apple products sold would look quite different. And given that the distinction between "a PC" and a tablet or smartphone is becoming ever more blurred, the latter chart would actually be more meaningful.

smartphone adoption growing 10x faster than PC business in the 1980's

smartphone adoption growing 10x faster than PC business in the 1980's | cross pond high tech | Scoop.it

The rate of iOS and Android device adoption has surpassed that of any consumer technology in history.  Compared to recent technologies, smart device adoption is being adopted 10X faster than that of the 80s PC revolution, 2X faster than that of 90s Internet Boom and 3X faster than that of recent social network adoption.

Five years into the smart device growth curve, expansion of this new technology is rapidly expanding beyond early adopter markets such as such as North America and Western Europe, creating a true worldwide addressable market.

Overall, Flurry estimates that there were over 640 million iOS and Android devices in use during the month of July 2012.
