Pretty Soon We'll Spend More Time With Smartphones Than TVs | cross pond high tech | Scoop.it
Cool chart from mobile analytics firm, Flurry. It says people are spending 127 minutes per day with their smartphones, up from 66 minutes per day in 2010. This means we spend more time with mobile phones and apps than we do on the web. This time spent is rapidly approaching the time we spend watching TV.

The first Open Compute Europe Summit took place in Paris on October 30 & 31st, 2014, on Ecole Polytechnique's campus in Palaiseau.

The european tech scene is catching up on OCP, with pioneers such as Telecity or Enter.it , and is federated by Splitted Desktop System's Jean-Marie Verdun.

Here is the keynote I delivered at government's request, explaining why France is Open (to) Compute (following my April post - in french).

Most enjoyable standing ovations are the ones you call for those deserving real credit (at 29'30")

Telcos Tap Into Cloud Platforms

Telcos Tap Into Cloud Platforms | cross pond high tech | Scoop.it

Fast-growing cloud service platform providers such as AppDirect bring telcos closer to their business customers.

Developing the services and attaining the skills to meet the demands of enterprise users is challenging, but that's where cloud services and platform providers come in. Gartner Inc.  predicts this fast-growing segment will account for 20% of all cloud service usage in 2015, compared with 5% in 2013.

It's becoming a popular way for operators to reach out to business customers. The latest to join the party is Telstra Corp. Ltd., which says its new apps marketplace for SMEs is designed to remove "the complexity out of choosing and managing apps from different vendors."

The Australian operator is using a white-label platform from AppDirect , which also counts Comcast Corp., Deutsche Telekom AG and TeliaSonera AB as customers.

AppDirect, founded in Sydney five years ago but now based in San Francisco, is one of the largest of these cloud middlemen. Richard Dufty, vice president of worldwide sales at AppDirect, says the business was created to bring together "buyers and sellers from two different spectrums who could not get access to each other."

Philippe J DEWOST's insight:

Interesting story about AppDirect that shows how middlemen can strive in the cloud

UK, US behind Regin malware, attacked European Union networks

UK, US behind Regin malware, attacked European Union networks | cross pond high tech | Scoop.it

Blame the British and American spy agencies for the latest state-sponsored malware attack, say reporters at The Intercept.

The publication, which in the wake of Glenn Greenwald's departure from The Guardian continued to publish documents leaked by Edward Snowden, said on Monday the recently discovered malware, known as Regin, was used against targets in the European Union.

One of those targets included Belgian telecommunications company Belgacom, which had its networks broken into by the British spy agency the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ).

Regin was first publicly talked about over the weekend after Symantec discovered the "sophisticated" malware, though is understood to have been in circulation since 2008.

Compared to Stuxnet, the state-sponsored malware whose creators have never been confirmed, the recently-discovered trojan steals data from machines and networks it infects, disguised as Microsoft software.

After criticizing it, Cisco joins Open Compute | cross pond high tech | Scoop.it

Cisco has joined the Open Compute Project, a Facebook-driven effort to develop open source servers and switches, 16 months after criticizing it. At that time, Cisco CEO John Chambers said OCP has “weaknesses” that Cisco can exploit.

Featured ResourceChambers said efforts like Facebook’s to commoditize and wring cost out of hardware purchases will open up opportunities for Cisco to provide solutions that are better tailored to specific customer needs:"I think this will just be one more series of good challenges that Cisco will say ‘what’s the business objective on.’ There are a lot of weaknesses to the area -- we’re going to go back and solve customer problems. If you’re standalone anything, this is going to be a hard market to play in. Anything white label, where the decision is cost or opex, you’re going to lose."

ExtremeTech : The iPad Air 2, with a tri-core CPU, is almost as fast as a modern PC

ExtremeTech : The iPad Air 2, with a tri-core CPU, is almost as fast as a modern PC | cross pond high tech | Scoop.it

the iPad Air 2 is powered by the A8X SoC — a chip with three billion transistors, and a tri-core CPU that gets uncomfortably close to laptop levels of performance, with a decent GPU to boot.

.../...

the A8X now has a Geekbench score that is very close to a dual-core Core i5-4250U — the Haswell chip that’s inside the mid-2013 13-inch MacBook Air. The A8X CPU manages single- and multi-threaded scores of 1812 and 4477 — while the Core i5-4250U is at 2281 and 4519

Philippe J DEWOST's insight:

#HardwareIsNotDead - Love the conclusion: "unless you need a PC for high-end gaming or multimedia editing, the iPad Air 2 and A8X SoC proves that we’re now getting scarily close to a point where tablets can replace laptops. If I was a chip maker, or a laptop OEM, I’d be a little scared of Apple right now — clearly, its chip design team is a force to be reckoned with."

Full speed ahead for 802.11ac Gigabit Wi-Fi | cross pond high tech | Scoop.it
Last December customers were peppering wireless LAN vendors with questions about whether to upgrade to the pre-standard-but-certified 802.11ac products flooding the market or hold off until 2015, when more powerful “Wave 2” Gigabit Wifi gear was expected to become prevalent. A year later, even though Wave 2 products have begun trickling into the market, many IT shops seem less preoccupied with Wave 2 and more focused on installing the Wave 1 11ac routers, access points and other products at hand
Philippe J DEWOST's insight:

Amazon undercuts Google's cloud prices - providing you can pay up front

Amazon undercuts Google's cloud prices - providing you can pay up front | cross pond high tech | Scoop.it

Amazon has introduced a way to pay for cloud infrastructure that undercuts Google – provided you're willing to shell out up front towards at least one year of use.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has changed the way it charges for its Reserved Instance (RI) compute infrastructure on its Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2). EC2 customers pay for Reserved Instance infrastructure whether they use it or not, unlike EC2's On Demand Instances.

The charges for Reserved Instances are no longer split into light, medium and heavy usage but instead reflect how much a user is willing to pay up front.

Users can chose to pay no up-front costs, or some or all of the costs up front, and must commit to paying for one or three years of usage. A table produced by the cloud portfolio management company RightScale summarises the available payment options below.

When Women Stopped Coding

When Women Stopped Coding | cross pond high tech | Scoop.it

Modern computer science is dominated by men. But it hasn't always been this way.

A lot of computing pioneers — the people who programmed the first digital computers — were women. And for decades, the number of women studying computer science was growing faster than the number of men. But in 1984, something changed. The percentage of women in computer science flattened, and then plunged, even as the share of women in other technical and professional fields kept rising.

What happened?
