Why Cisco Just Spent $1.2 Billion on Meraki

Why Cisco Just Spent $1.2 Billion on Meraki | cross pond high tech | Scoop.it
Cisco bought a wifi startup called Meraki for $1.2 billion.

Here's the blog post everyone is passing around to explain how that happened.

It's from Doug Leone, who got his VC firm, Sequoia Capital, to invest in Meraki:

Quick: when was the last time you plugged in an Ethernet cable? If you have trouble answering that question, you’re one of the reasons why Cisco has agreed to acquire Meraki.

The CENTCOM Twitter Hack On Monday Is A Sign Of Things To Come

The CENTCOM Twitter Hack On Monday Is A Sign Of Things To Come | cross pond high tech | Scoop.it
The CENTCOM breach was an asymmetrical attack in the purest sense. It closed the gap between a weak and very limited actor and a much more powerful and numerous opponent. As The Denver Post recounted after last week's breach of the Albuquerque Journal and a Salisbury, Maryland, TV station, CyberCaliphate couldn't even hack his way past the paywall of New Mexico's Mountain View Telegraph. But single hacker of apparently modest ability was still able to spread propaganda from social-media accounts associated with the commanders of the world's most powerful military.

Full speed ahead for 802.11ac Gigabit Wi-Fi

Full speed ahead for 802.11ac Gigabit Wi-Fi | cross pond high tech | Scoop.it
Last December customers were peppering wireless LAN vendors with questions about whether to upgrade to the pre-standard-but-certified 802.11ac products flooding the market or hold off until 2015, when more powerful “Wave 2” Gigabit Wifi gear was expected to become prevalent. A year later, even though Wave 2 products have begun trickling into the market, many IT shops seem less preoccupied with Wave 2 and more focused on installing the Wave 1 11ac routers, access points and other products at hand
Philippe J DEWOST's insight:

Time to check for your 802.11ac compatibility. WiFi isn’t about the coverage anymore, it’s about capacity.

Amazon undercuts Google's cloud prices - providing you can pay up front

Amazon undercuts Google's cloud prices - providing you can pay up front | cross pond high tech | Scoop.it

Amazon has introduced a way to pay for cloud infrastructure that undercuts Google – provided you're willing to shell out up front towards at least one year of use.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has changed the way it charges for its Reserved Instance (RI) compute infrastructure on its Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2). EC2 customers pay for Reserved Instance infrastructure whether they use it or not, unlike EC2's On Demand Instances.

The charges for Reserved Instances are no longer split into light, medium and heavy usage but instead reflect how much a user is willing to pay up front.

Users can chose to pay no up-front costs, or some or all of the costs up front, and must commit to paying for one or three years of usage. A table produced by the cloud portfolio management company RightScale summarises the available payment options below.

Even @theEconomist loves @LaFrenchTech

Even @theEconomist loves @LaFrenchTech | cross pond high tech | Scoop.it

WHILE much of the world is swathed in gloom, the 48th annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, which opened to the public on January 6th, is all jollity. Demand for such gadgets adds up to more than $1 trillion a year, according to the Consumer Electronic Association (CEA), which puts on the world’s most important consumer-tech jamboree. More than 3,600 companies are exhibiting in the Nevada city and more than 20,000 new products will be launched.

Among the novelties this year is an exceptionally strong French presence. Around 120 firms from France are showing their wares there, fewer than from China, the United States, South Korea or Taiwan, but more than from other European countries such as Germany and Britain.

Some are big companies applying new digital technology to essentially old businesses, among them the cosmetics giant L’Oréal, drinks-maker Pernod Ricard and La Poste. A swathe of established mid-sized tech firms are there too, a number of them serial winners of awards for innovation. The new Activité Pop smartwatch by Withings is attracting attention. So are Netatmo’s bracelet measuring sun exposure and Parrot’s mini-drones and fancy headphones.

The big increase, however, is in the number of French start-ups. Up from 38 in 2014 to 66 this year, they account for almost one in four of the firms in Eureka Park, an area reserved for start-ups. Only America has fielded more.

Two new outfits were among five French firms singled out by CES for their innovation. Lima makes a hardware adapter and a multi-platform app that allows people to have the same files on all their devices, regardless of operating system or storage capacity. Voxtok produces a top-quality audio box for playing stored music, a sort of “connected jukebox”. Then there is SlowControl’s smart baby bottle that tracks the amount of milk an infant consumes. Emiota is presenting a prototype belt that measures changes in the size of the wearer’s waist and adjusts accordingly. Cityzen Sciences produces a tee-shirt that tracks the heartbeat. All in all, the French offering is varied but with a particular strength in connected objects.

Philippe J DEWOST's insight:

@theEconomist might not yet turn francophile, yet such a "paper" on @LaFrenchTech is as unexpected as welcome as they join the already fantastic US coverage of #FrenchTech companies taking Vegas and #CES by storm. I'm proud of what @CaisseDesDepots ignited 18 months ago.

Telcos Tap Into Cloud Platforms

Telcos Tap Into Cloud Platforms | cross pond high tech | Scoop.it

Fast-growing cloud service platform providers such as AppDirect bring telcos closer to their business customers.

Developing the services and attaining the skills to meet the demands of enterprise users is challenging, but that's where cloud services and platform providers come in. Gartner Inc.  predicts this fast-growing segment will account for 20% of all cloud service usage in 2015, compared with 5% in 2013.

It's becoming a popular way for operators to reach out to business customers. The latest to join the party is Telstra Corp. Ltd., which says its new apps marketplace for SMEs is designed to remove "the complexity out of choosing and managing apps from different vendors."

The Australian operator is using a white-label platform from AppDirect , which also counts Comcast Corp., Deutsche Telekom AG and TeliaSonera AB as customers.

AppDirect, founded in Sydney five years ago but now based in San Francisco, is one of the largest of these cloud middlemen. Richard Dufty, vice president of worldwide sales at AppDirect, says the business was created to bring together "buyers and sellers from two different spectrums who could not get access to each other."

UK, US behind Regin malware, attacked European Union networks

UK, US behind Regin malware, attacked European Union networks | cross pond high tech | Scoop.it

Blame the British and American spy agencies for the latest state-sponsored malware attack, say reporters at The Intercept.

The publication, which in the wake of Glenn Greenwald's departure from The Guardian continued to publish documents leaked by Edward Snowden, said on Monday the recently discovered malware, known as Regin, was used against targets in the European Union.

One of those targets included Belgian telecommunications company Belgacom, which had its networks broken into by the British spy agency the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ).

Regin was first publicly talked about over the weekend after Symantec discovered the "sophisticated" malware, though is understood to have been in circulation since 2008.

Compared to Stuxnet, the state-sponsored malware whose creators have never been confirmed, the recently-discovered trojan steals data from machines and networks it infects, disguised as Microsoft software.
