Samsung Makes Much More Money On Mobile Than Google Makes Overall
Pretty insane chart from Horace Dediu at Asymco. He compares Samsung's mobile operating income to Google's overall operating income.

As you can see, Samsung's mobile operating income will soon be twice as much as Google's overall operating income. Samsung's operating income is almost entirely because of Google's Android.

Beyond Screens Keynote — Connected TV and Digital Media Forum in Moscow

Beyond Screens Keynote — Connected TV and Digital Media Forum in Moscow | cross pond high tech | Scoop.it

Here is the slide deck I used for my Keynote at the &Connected TV & Digital Media& forum where I was invited by Connectica Lab in Moscow on March 5th, 2014. Due to current SlideShare limitations it is impossible to directly import slides in the latest Apple Keynote format, hence the need to manually publish here the keynote verbatim to complement the slides.

.../...

TV has evolved significantly.  First came color. Then came choice. Then came the VCR that allowed recording, deferred viewing, and introduced external content (either purchased, rented, or handed out by friends and family) into the TV set.
Then came digital content and digital broadcast, followed by HD.
And only very recently came competition from other screens to consume video content: not only were they personal, they follow the viewer...

We now spend a full five hours and 16 minutes a day in front of a screen, and that's without even turning on a television (4,5 hours a day for US adults).

- What even does TV watching now mean?

- is TV video delivered in real time ?

- is Connected TV is just TV with Ethernet and firmware updates?

Philippe J DEWOST's insight:

http://getpopcornti.me/ sounds like a strange echo to slide 7 : Content experience is definitely broken. And la #FrenchTech gets promoted slide 15...

When Women Stopped Coding

When Women Stopped Coding | cross pond high tech | Scoop.it

Modern computer science is dominated by men. But it hasn't always been this way.

A lot of computing pioneers — the people who programmed the first digital computers — were women. And for decades, the number of women studying computer science was growing faster than the number of men. But in 1984, something changed. The percentage of women in computer science flattened, and then plunged, even as the share of women in other technical and professional fields kept rising.

What happened?

Philippe J DEWOST's insight:

Unexpected and very interesting answer to why girls do not code (anymore). First time I see this parity issue covered backwards.

A Snapshot Of Apple's Monster September Quarter

A Snapshot Of Apple's Monster September Quarter | cross pond high tech | Scoop.it

As you can see from the chart below, which was provided for us by BI Intelligence, Apple's $42.12 billion in revenue is a big 12% jump from the same quarter a year ago. It was Apple's best September quarter ever — thanks in large part to the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, which continue selling like hotcakes; the iPhone in general accounted for 56% of the company's revenue this quarter. But the real surprise is the Mac, which had its best quarter in Apple's history with 5.52 million unit sales; the Mac accounted for more of Apple's revenue than the iPad (16% versus 13%, respectively). Apple expects an even bigger December quarter, projecting $63.5 billion to $66.6 billion in revenue for the holiday season — that would make it the company's most successful quarter in history.

ExtremeTech : The iPad Air 2, with a tri-core CPU, is almost as fast as a modern PC | cross pond high tech | Scoop.it

the iPad Air 2 is powered by the A8X SoC — a chip with three billion transistors, and a tri-core CPU that gets uncomfortably close to laptop levels of performance, with a decent GPU to boot.

.../...

the A8X now has a Geekbench score that is very close to a dual-core Core i5-4250U — the Haswell chip that’s inside the mid-2013 13-inch MacBook Air. The A8X CPU manages single- and multi-threaded scores of 1812 and 4477 — while the Core i5-4250U is at 2281 and 4519

Philippe J DEWOST's insight:

#HardwareIsNotDead - Love the conclusion: "unless you need a PC for high-end gaming or multimedia editing, the iPad Air 2 and A8X SoC proves that we’re now getting scarily close to a point where tablets can replace laptops. If I was a chip maker, or a laptop OEM, I’d be a little scared of Apple right now — clearly, its chip design team is a force to be reckoned with."

Google Reveals SSL 3.0 Encryption Vulnerability

Google Reveals SSL 3.0 Encryption Vulnerability | cross pond high tech | Scoop.it

Google researchers announced(PDF link) that they have found a bug in the SSL 3.0 protocol. The exploit could be used to intercept critical data that’s supposed to be encrypted between clients and servers.

The exploit first allows attackers to initiate a “downgrade dance” that tells the client that the server doesn’t support the more secure TLS (Transport Layer Security) protocol and forces it to connect via SSL 3.0. From there a man-in-the-middle attack can decrypt secure HTTP cookies. Google calls this the POODLE (Padding Oracle On Downgraded Legacy Encryption) attack.

In other words, your data is no longer encrypted. Google researchers Bodo Möller, Thai Duong and Krzysztof Kotowicz recommend disabling SSL 3.0 on servers and in clients. The server and client will default to the more secure TSL and the exploit won’t be possible.

Philippe J DEWOST's insight:

openSSL was not the only one. Now that #SSL 3.0 is broken, what's left ?
