Happy 15th Birthday to VLC/VideoLan !

Happy 15th Birthday to VLC/VideoLan ! | cross pond high tech | Scoop.it

Technically, today is the 15th anniversary of the relicensing of all the VideoLAN software to the GPL license, as agreed by the École Centrale Paris, on February 1st, 2001.

If you've been to one of my talks, (if you haven't, you should come to one), you know that the project that became VideoLAN and VLC, is almost 5 years older than that, and was called Network 2000.

Moreover, the first commit on the VideoLAN Client project is from August 8th 1999, by Michel Kaempf had 21275 lines of code already, so the VLC software was started earlier in 1999.

However, the most important date for the birth of VLC is when it was allowed to be used outside of the school, and therefore when the project was GPL-ized: February 1st, 2001.

Facts and numbersSince then, only on VLC, we've had around

  • 700 contributors,
  • 70000 commits,
  • at least 2 billion downloads,
  • hundreds of millions users!

And all that, mostly with volunteers and without turning into a business!

We have now ports for Windows, GNU/Linux, BSD, OS X, iPhone and iPad, Android, Solaris, Windows Phones, BeOS, OS/2, Android TV, Apple TV, Tizen and ChromeOS.

Google's Nest Is Buying Wi-Fi Camera Company Dropcam For $555 Million

Google's Nest Is Buying Wi-Fi Camera Company Dropcam For $555 Million | cross pond high tech | Scoop.it

The company's cameras are used primarily for home monitoring. Its two most popular cameras sell for $199 and $149.

In addition to its hardware business, Dropcam also sells cloud storage for its videos. Last year the company said 39% of its customers pay for the video storage service.

Dropcam will probably look to Nest's success in the "Internet of Things" space for guidance. It plans to move beyond video surveillance and hopes to incorporate movement sensors into its products, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Philippe J DEWOST's insight:

When a Data company buys another Data Pump through an IoT subsidiary. At Amazon Summit 2014 in Paris, the above chart was unveiled (courtesy Geoffrey Arduini) claiming that Dropcam is generating more video uploads than YouTube.

Mind blowing interview of McLaren's Ron Dennis about the impact of Big Data on motor racing

Ron Dennis of McLaren in conversation with David Rowan, editor of Wired, in conversation at the G8 Innovation Conference on 14 June 2013 at the Crystal in London

Philippe J DEWOST's insight:

6 months after, I'm still looking at this talk as one of the most inspiring features of the G8 Innovation Conference I was invited at by UKTI and McKinsey last year. I have suggested this video to business friends many times over the past weeks and it is one of the very few YouTube pieces that I actually have viewed more than once.

Key points :

- Motor racing is unique: the second is the unit, a 1% window between success and failure.

- A Formula 1 has 100 sensors 6.5 Billion data points over a Grand Prix. A race team is run from HQ where 3000 race patterns are analysed against the current car's parameters.

- McLaren spends between 100-200 M£ in their data analysis and processing systems.

- In racing there is no error and control. Massive fast development of components. Simulation reversed R&D: now they have 90% productivity instead of 10%. "Basically we make nothing that does not work"

- Electric motor coupled to very sophisticated control system allow for absolutely linear torque

- One last thing : Graphene is the next big thing

From Competition to Cooperation by Primavera De Filippi @ TEDxCambridge

The animal kingdom contains numerous examples of individuals cooperating with one another to achieve impressive outcomes without the need for planning, control, or even direct communication between agents – examples are bees, ants, and schools of fish. Humans, however, have only been able to achieve goals cooperatively through the imposition of organizational hierarchies, centralized coordination, and rules.

Blockchain technologies offer a new approach, allowing us to achieve large-scale and systematic cooperation in an entirely distributed and decentralized manner. The application of this technology, however, has mostly focused on transaction-driven financial models like Bitcoin, but the Blockchain’s ability to transact and cooperate on a peer-to-peer basis, without relying on any centralized authority or middlemen, has many other applications. The Blockchain offers a new governance model with implications well beyond financial markets.

Primavera De Filippi is a permanent researcher at the National Center of Scientific Research (CNRS) in Paris. She is currently a research fellow at the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard Law School, where she’s investigating the concept of governance-by-design as it relates to distributed online architectures. Most of her research focuses on the legal challenges raised, and faced by emergent decentralized technologies – such as Bitcoin, Ethereum and other blockchain-based applications – and how these technologies could be used to design new governance models capable of supporting large-scale decentralized collaboration and more participatory decision-making.

Philippe J DEWOST's insight:

Must see enjoyable and remarkable TEDx talk with a nice approach to the blockchain topic.
