Finally, the report outlines some potential directions for the initiative – independent, but potentially linked under the umbrella and neutral platform of the Forum.

More than 20 of the world’s top 50 cities ranked by gross domestic product are projected to be located in Asia by 2025, up from eight in 2007, according to the McKinsey Global Institute. TNE - HEGlobal

Transnational education (TNE) refers to education provision for students based in a country other than the one in which the awarding institution is located. For the UK, this means students based overseas studying for UK educational qualifications.

TNE has become a major part of the UK higher education landscape, and sits at the heart of the internationalisation strategies of many UK universities. By 2010 the number of students (undergraduate and postgraduate) studying for a UK degree overseas was over 408,000 - a greater number than the number of international students studying in the UK (405,000).

The University of Tokyo's recent decision to shift the start of the school year from the spring to the autumn -- in line with most school systems in the West -- is a sure signal that Japan's most prestigious academic institution is deeply worried about being on the losing end of increasing international competition among universities. Furthermore, the move by Todai -- as the University of Tokyo is popularly known -- is putting pressure on other Japanese schools to follow suit.

Despite Greece's financial crisis, optimism was the prevailing mood at last month's meeting of the Hellenic Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in Athens, where Thomaidou coordinated a session. Meeting attendance was at a record high, and chat was full of references to fancy equipment purchases and Greek success in winning participation in European research-infrastructure programmes.
