Is internationalization becoming too popular? When ideas become too popular, then academics, despite their feisty image, are less willing to dissent. Associate deans or assistant professors have plenty of their own battles to fight, like getting their share of the budget or winning tenure. When they see the internationalization theme sweeping across campus, they resign themselves to yet another academic fad. They keep their head below the parapet, quietly focusing on their own or their departments’ interests. Being against internationalization may look like being against diversity: a highly risky personal proposition.

That's the prediction of Anthony Seldon, head of Wellington College in Berkshire.

Dr Seldon, one of the UK's most prominent head teachers, says that ambitious teenagers are looking further afield than ever before in their university choices.

The Greek debt crisis has been a major topic in the news for the past two years. Since the introduction of the austerity measures by the IMF and the Troika, the discussion in media about Greece has been focusing on the frequent incidents of social unrest, the prediction of the exact day of bankruptcy, and all the evils of government budget deficits of P.I.G.S.


Despite the gloomy predictions for the future of the Greek economy, the debt crisis has acted as the catalyst for the acceleration of notable changes in the Greece society, which allows a great degree of optimism for the future. A major example of this is the recent reforms in the Greek higher education system.

State funding as a share of public universities’ budgets declined from 28 percent in 2001 to 19 percent in 2009, according to a recent NSF report. Another report noted that public funding for higher education in California was cut by $1.5 billion, or nearly 12% in 2011-12, to $9.7 billion from $11.2 billion.

The Knowledge Base for Higher Education and Research in the Western Balkans (HERDATA) is a component of a project supported through the NORGLOBAL programme of the Research Council of Norway and entitled European Integration in Higher Education and Research in the Western Balkans.

The project is jointly implemented by the Department of Educational Research of the Faculty of Educational Sciences (PFI) and the Centre for European Studies (ARENA) at the University of Oslo, the University of Zagreb, the Faculty of Political Science at the University of Belgrade and the Norwegian Institute for Studies in Innovation, Research and Education (NIFUSTEP) and the Centre for Education Policy.
