Homework: An unnecessary evil? … Surprising findings from new research

A new study on the academic effects of homework offers not only some intriguing results but also a lesson on how to read a study -- and a reminder of the importance of doing just that: reading studies (carefully) rather than relying on summaries by journalists or even by the researchers themselves. Alfie Kohn explains.

Interesting view of the world of technology and its role in education. Who is profiting? Who is losing? Those are key questions.

diane gusa's curator insight, August 21, 2013 12:24 AM

Can students really be taught critical thinking, civics, and citizenship skills in a standardized format that values conformity? Will relying on MOOCs and automation in the long-term turn professors into "delivery managers" and students into automatons and passive consumers rather than citizens?

Henry A. Giroux | When Schools Become Dead Zones of the Imagination: A Critical Pedagogy Manifesto | Critical Pedagogy | Scoop.it

If the right-wing billionaires and apostles of corporate power have their way, public schools will become “dead zones of the imagination,” reduced to anti-public spaces that wage an assault on critical thinking, civic literacy and historical memory.1 Since the 1980s, schools have increasingly become testing hubs that de-skill teachers and disempower students.

Keith Wayne Brown's curator insight, April 5, 2013 10:26 AM

Everyday I try to help youth struggle through the assembly line  model of higher education. The abstract "national industrial state" was replaced long ago by the even more abstract "global financial market."
