Christopher Pearsall's curator insight, November 6, 2013 8:23 PM

This is a mystery that many people don't even think about.  In fact I doubt most people have even looked up whether a judge can even order you to pay child support AND extracurricular expenses for your children.  What if you have to pay child support for 3 children and one likes hockey, the other one likes horse back riding and the last one is into football.  That can be some pretty expensive extras for these children on top of child support.  How far is a parent required to go?  Especially if the parties are getting divorced?

Clearly it costs more for 2 to live separately than it does for them to live together.  But sometimes one partner or the other doesn't want things to change.  How is that possible when the other parent now has to live separately?  Is it even realistic?  Probably not!

People need to be prepared for these answers in the event they have kids and a divorce proceeding is looming in the wings.

I'm glad to help you stay on top of it.... at least in Rhode Island anyway.  And yet the question is one that people should ask their divorce lawyers no matter what state or commonwealth they live in.
