There's a rare (maybe not so rare) condition called Munchausen (by officer) syndrome. It's similar to Munchausen by Proxy. In the officer version, fake ambushes are used to attract attention similar to the Munchausen by Proxy where a mother harms her child for attention. When I've seen it, it's been the officer who most wants to be recognized as one of the "warriors", but can never live up to the consistent legendary status that those officers come to own. Some of these officers become "warriors" by being tough, some by being great investigators, some by making the rare, but significant arrests. The rules are all very vague and it can be frustrating.
Rob Duke's comment, September 6, 2015 4:24 PM
Once you've done the job, you'd immediately recognize those who are "born" to the job, those who work really hard and become proficient, and those who really should find another line of work. Most officers go through the journey and find their path--even if its staying on with the department, but accepting that they'll never be comfortable chasing that "warrior" status. Good departments are built on good solid officers, but you also need those "warriors" who will go where angels fear to tread. In many urban areas, we now staff half the department with non-sworn well-paid staff. This makes it easier on everyone. We reward the non-sworn staff well, but differently. It may be a better fit for some personalities.
Rob Duke's comment, September 6, 2015 4:26 PM
I wasn't clear in that last post: there are truly those "born" to the job. They just have some sixth sense. Then there's another group that have the right temperament, but worked hard to develop the skills. Both can be successful. But, there are those that aren't equipped or who aren't suited to do the crazier aspects of the job.

Yesterday I lost the best guy I have come across so far this year. I would have hired him for my client with a casual conversation about his past work and challenges. I lost this guy because he failed in Reasoning Test took by HR department.
