Whistleblower Retaliation Creep - Government Accountability Project

Whistleblower Retaliation Creep - Government Accountability Project | Criminal Justice in America | Scoop.it
Whistleblower Retaliation Creep by Jesselyn Radack on August 15, 2012 ( The Whistleblogger / 2012 )

Glenn Greenwald wrote yesterday about "secrecy creep"  – the retaliation against whistleblowers that has crept down from the White House into Executive branch agencies.

Whistleblowers have always been subjected to retaliation, but the retaliation used to be focused on marginalizing the whistleblower, shifting or eliminating the whistleblower's job duties, firing her, or yanking her security clearance. Now, with the Obama administration's war on whistleblowers, whistleblower retaliation includes polygraphs, systematic monitoring of whistleblowers' electronic activities, and prosecution under the Espionage Act – even at Executive agencies beyond the intelligence community.

FBI Sting Lawsuit Blocked by "State Secrets" Doctrine

FBI Sting Lawsuit Blocked by "State Secrets" Doctrine | Criminal Justice in America | Scoop.it
The FBI can spy on you and block you from doing anything about it.

The case involves two key elements of the Obama administration's approach to national security: The use of FBI informants and fake terror plots and the aggressive use of the state secrets doctrine to keep its counterterrorism operations secret. As Trevor Aaronson reported in his award-winning story for the September/October 2011 issue of Mother Jones, "With three exceptions, all of the high-profile domestic terror plots of the last decade were actually FBI stings."

Surveillance Fourth Amendment Violations Admitted by Feds - Hit & Run : Reason.com | Criminal Justice in America | Scoop.it

J.D. Tuccille|Jul. 24, 2012 3:46 pm

This won't come as much of a shocker, but the federal government has, in a sideways fashion, admitted that electronic snooping conducted under the controversial Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act Amendments Act of 2008 (federal motto: roll-off-the-tongue is not our style) has sometimes violated the Fourth Amendment. I say sideways, because the news comes courtesy of a leaked letter to Senator Ron Wyden, from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, authorizing the privacy-championing legislator to make statements to that effect. And yes, you should find it creepy that an elected lawmaker needs a professional spook's permission to tell us that the government has screwed us over.

VIDEO SHOWS OFFICER SLAM TEEN GIRL INTO GROUND, POLICE INVESTIGATING

Published on Aug 10, 2012 by copwatchnews

ARLINGTON - Arlington police are looking into whether or not an officer used excessive force Wednesday night to break up a series of fights.
In a video posted online, an officer is seen slamming a girl to the ground. The 15 year-old girl, who has not been identified, was arrested for allegedly fighting.
Arlington police have started an investigation and are hoping people with other videos of the incident will come forward.
"At the end of the day, we just don't have all of the facts yet," said Sgt. Christopher Cook.
The incident happened after fights broke out at a dance hall in the 1000 block of Collins Street.
Authorities have put out a call for any other videos of the incident and asked patience from anyone alarmed by these images.
"Let the investigation run its process," Cook said. "I assure you that the Arlington Police Department investigates use of force very, very seriously."
The officer involved is working his regular duty during the investigation, and police say the teenage girl in this video is cooperating with authorities.
In all, five people were arrested during the incident - 9 August 2012.

Victim of Police Brutality, and alleged Mighty Destroyer of cop cars Roger Pion goes to court

blished on Aug 8, 2012 by WHYNotNews

FREE ROGER!

VIDEO: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XXp5gaZBVY&feature=player_embedded#!

A simple hardworking farmer, father to a beloved daughters, and one son, and member of down-to-earth family needs your help. For eight years, Roger Pion has been subject to harassment by local and county law enforcement. This
harassment has included physical violence against Roger.

As recently as a month ago, during an arrest over the possession of marijuana, a non violent offense, Roger was beaten by police, resulting in a concussion. He had to be taken to the ER for treatment. Subsequent to this beating, he was falsely charged with resisting arrest.

As a victim of police harassment, Roger had nowhere to turn for help. He snapped and drove his family's tractor over seven vacant police cars. Roger had no intention of harming anyone, he merely took out his anger on these objects -- symbols of the harassment he was suffering.

Following this event, the police have changed their story. They have unjustly and without cause added the charges of leaving the scene of an accident, resisting arrest, and assault upon a police officer. Roger never resisted arrested. Roger did not assault or even attempt to assault any police officers. Additionally, driving the tractor over the police cars was no accident.

Please help Roger and take a stand against police harassment by supporting Roger during this time of need. Roger needs a good lawyer. Roger's bail has been set at $50,000.00. His legal expenses will exceed $100,000.00. Without quick and substantial donations, Roger will not get the defense he needs. We urge you to donate to Roger's defense fund. Every dollar will make a difference. Please help and please pass on word to others.

Unravelling TrapWire: The CIA-Connected Global Suspicious Activity Surveillance System | Public Intelligence | Criminal Justice in America | Scoop.it

Public Intelligence

Hacked emails from the private intelligence firm Stratfor shed light on a global suspicious activity surveillance system called TrapWire that is reportedly in use in locations around the world from the London Stock Exchange to the White House.  The emails, which were released yesterday by WikiLeaks, provide information on the extent and operations of a system designed to correlate suspicious activity reports and other evidence that may indicate surveillance connected with a potential terrorist attack.

Trapwire infographic Data

In August 2012, Wikileaks revealed details about a system known as Trapwire that uses facial recognition and other techniques to track and monitor individuals captured on countless different closed-circuit camera

s operated by cities and other insititutions. The software is billed as a method by which to prevent terrorism, but can of course also be used to provide unprecedented surveillance and data-mining capabilities to governments, corporations, and other insitutions, including many with a history of using new technologies to violate the rights of citizens. Trapwire is already used in New York, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Texas, DC, London, and other locales.

Trapwire: It's Not the Surveillance, It's the Sleaze | Danger Room | Wired.com

Trapwire: It's Not the Surveillance, It's the Sleaze | Danger Room | Wired.com | Criminal Justice in America | Scoop.it

Ever since WikiLeaks began releasing a series of documents about the surveillance system Trapwire, there’s been a panicked outcry over this supposedly all-seeing, revolutionary spy network. In fact, there are any number of companies that say they comb through video feeds or suspicious activity reports in largely the same way that Trapwire claims to do. What’s truly extraordinary about Trapwire was how it was marketed by the private intelligence firm Stratfor, whose internal e-mails WikiLeaks exposed.

The documents show Stratfor being less than straight with its clients, using temporary jobs in government to set up Trapwire contracts, and calling it all a “wet dream.” In their e-mails, executives at Stratfor may have been hyping up a surveillance technology. But what they really did was provide reconnaissance on the $25 billion world of intelligence-for-hire that’s ordinarily hidden from public view. In this case, the sunlight isn’t particularly flattering.

The Unbearable Awareness of Total Surveillance | MyFDL | Criminal Justice in America | Scoop.it

"Three surveillance systems in the news are Indect (a British surveillance program prepared for Europe’s future use and implemented at the Olympic Games);Trapwire (a commercial surveillance net in the U.S. revealed by Wikileaks Stratfor emails.); and the Domain Awareness System in NYC. These are additions to American Fusion Centers which integrate information among Federal, State, and local police and security agencies as well as heads of private businesses.  In addition to paid security personnel, we now have neighbor -on- neighbor surveillance and reporting;  and this has an historical parallel with the Stasi German secret police who empowered a total police state surveillance structure by encouraging everyone to report on everyone. All of the above formal systems (highlighted in the links) have as their goal to prevent ‘crimes’ using patterns of data, algorithms. Abnormal behavior will trigger an alarm and a “precrime” intervention. The intervention could range from the sending of a suspicious activity report to their network of clients and agencies or to an arrest."

Despite a mainstream media blackout on the topic, the alternative media is abuzz with this week’s hearing on the constitutionality of the clearly unconstitutional NDAA.  In case you don’t remember, section 1021 of the NDAA, which Obama signed into law on December 31 of last year, allows the government to lock up U.S. citizens indefinitely without a trial.  At the time of signing, Obama penned a pathetic letter to many of his outraged supporters where he basically said he signed it but he won’t use it.  Thanks pal!

So, it’s possible, if not probable that all those activists around the world who believe their emails are safe may well be sending messages that go straight into Trapwire, the surveillance system that monitors activists. This could be lifted straight out of a political conspiracy movie – but it isn’t.
