The violent protests that continue to plague Ferguson, Missouri, where an unarmed black teenager was shot dead by a white police officer, has brought military-grade hardware onto the streets in a frightening display of force. How did America get here?
In 2010 I gave the founder’s WARNING of this tyranny…yet their warnings are still not heard. Three years later we are still hearing the same demand that our Liberty must be suspended for security; that our Constitution is inadequate and needs to be “interpreted” to meet our current security needs. I am puzzled by the …
This interactive map created by Washington Post journalist Radley Balko and the libertarian Cato Institute shows botched paramilitary police raids across the U.S. The map focuses on the use of heavily armed SWAT teams who use forced entry to storm homes unannounced, usually while inhabitants are sleeping. As many as 40,000 of these raids happen each year — most frequently as police become soldiers in the drug war, often against nonviolent offenders. Many end up targeting innocent civilians by accident. Family pets are frequent targets as well; by one estimate, police in the U.S. kill a pet, on average, every 98 minutes. Unfortunately, the map is far from complete, as it is notoriously difficult to find large-scale data about police brutality. There are no national statistics on police shootings, for instance, though they occur on a regular basis. Since Michael Brown's death in Ferguson on Aug. 9, police have killed unarmed civilians in Los Angeles; San Jose; Victorville, California, and South Salt Lake, Utah.
FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) — The National Guard arrived in Ferguson but kept its distance from the streets where protesters clashed again with police, as clouds of tear gas and smoke hung over the St. Louis suburb where Michael Brown was fatally shot by a police officer.
The response by law enforcement to protesters in Ferguson, Mo., is being criticized for its level of force and use of military-style equipment. We've labeled the weapons and gear being used by police in these photos from Ferguson.
Things escalated once again late Friday evening in Ferguson, Missouri. An incredible uprising against the police state has been on-going in the streets there ever since the murder of seventeen year old Mike Brown, an unarmed teenager who was shot ten times by Officer Darren Wilson. Things seemed to be going smoothly after the peace…
USA Freedom Must Explicitly Require NSA and CIA to Comply with Law’s Minimization ProceduresPublished August 18, 2014 | By emptywheel
I know I’ve had a lot of mostly unenthusiastic things to say about even Pat Leahy’s version of the USA Freedom Act.
It explicitly exempts FBI from counting back door searchesIt may not do anything to existing non-electronic communication bulk programs, because it probably permits the use of corporate persons as Specific Selection TermsThe “connection chaining” may permit expanded access to smart phone dataIt retains USA Freedumber’s “foreign intelligence” retention language
