of [relationship] ‘vigilance’ include calling at unexpected times to see who s/he was with, having their friends check up on him/her, dropping by unexpectedly to see what s/he is doing, not letting s/he out of their site at a party. Examples of [relationship] violence include: hitting the [person] who made a pass at [their partner], slapping the [person] who made a pass a their partner, threatening their partner, and getting his/her friends to beat up the person who was interested in their partner.

Other tactics of ‘mate guarding’ include the ‘concealment of a mate’ (e.g., not taking them out to the party where other males/females will be present), ‘monopolizing of a mate’s time’ (e.g., spending all their free time with their partner so that they cannot meet anyone else), verbal threats, (e.g., threatening to break up with him/her if they ever cheat…), derogation of competition, (e.g., pointing out to their partner the other man/woman’s flaws), resource display, (e.g., buying them an expensive gift), appearance enhancement, (e.g., making themselves ‘extra attractive’ for their partner), sexual inducement, (e.g., performing sexual favors to keep their partner around), physical signs of possession, (e.g., holding their partner’s hand when other men/women are around), and possessive ornamentation, (e.g., asking their partner to wear a ring signifying that s/he is taken).

Men and women differ in how frequently they perform these mate-guarding tactics. Men are more likely than women to attempt to conceal their mates, use possessive markings, (e.g., asking her to wear his jacket), display resources, threaten rivals, and use physical violence toward rivals as tactics of mate guarding. Women are more likely than men to enhance their physical appearance and flirt with other men as tactics of mate guarding.

Our study of 107 newlywed married couples explored predictors of the intensity of effort a person allocated to mate guarding. Men married to young and physically attractive women, those high in reproductive value, mate-guarded them most intensely. These men were more likely than other men to conceal their mates, display emotional outbursts at the slightest signals of infidelity, and threaten other men with violence. Examples of the specific actions these men performed include:

(1) Refusing to take her to the party where other men were present, (2) Insisting that she spend all her free time with him, (3) Yelling at her for talking to another man, (4) Telling her that he would die if she ever left him, (5) Derogating the other man’s intelligence, (6) Staring coldly at the other guy who was looking at her.

Just as women’s youth and physical attractiveness figure heavily in men’s initial mate preference, they also determine the intensity of effort men devote to holding on to her.

It's amusing to find out that they call this a "job" and not personal satisfaction.... This shouldn't even be considered as "Teenagers having fun" ! This need not be exploitation towards the victims, but the offenders themselves. And especially when these young women are intoxicated off their rocket... Just goes to show these men don't have enough dignity and pride to actually have sexual intercourse with women they haven't intoxicated. Can't make sexual relationships so they have to force one out of women that won't even remember what happened to them when they awake from after it.

Masculinity, Bullying and the Locker Room

Masculinity, Bullying and the Locker Room | Crimes Against Humanity | Scoop.it

The Dolphins have indefinitely suspended Incognito for conduct detrimental to the team because his actions [against Martin], if true, are morally abominable and potential violations of workplace laws. Still, there are NFL personnel people and active and former players who believe Martin handled the situation poorly by allowing it to spill out of the locker room and into the public.

That's not to say they're defending Incognito. They're not in any way, shape or form. But they do believe there is an unwritten rule that player business should be handled in the locker room by the players themselves, particularly when the actions are as vile as those attributed to Incognito. "I think Jonathan Martin is a weak person," said one personnel man, speaking on the condition of anonymity. [do I even need to point out the hypocrisy of calling someone weak in character and NOT putting their name on the record?!?]

Seth Dixon's curator insight, November 5, 2013 4:35 PM

This ESPN article and SI article have me thinking about the culture of the locker room and the spaces of machismo that are cultivated there away from the view of the rest of society.  This is a rather important topic to me personally because I was victimized and systematically bullied in the locker room as a kid; I see a connection between what happens at the highest level of sports infusing the images that high school and little league kids aspire to have in their lives.  I was driving home listening to this particular Colin Cowherd radio show and was surprised how much I agreed with what he said.  Much of the backlash on this story has centered on the supposed “wussification of society.”  Sports are that great bastion of hyper-masculinity that rewards behavior that in other social circles would never be culturally unacceptable away from the field of play or the locker room.  Most locker rooms are fine, but expecting them to be self-policying is the type of scenario that bullies actively seek.  I think that those that defend the system’s code of silence fail to realize how they are a part of the system that empowers the bullies to victimize and take advantage of those that prefer more thoughtful, civilized interactions as ways to resolve disputes.  Any comment I’ve heard that has criticized Martin usually ends up tells me more about that commenter than it does to explain the situation.

In Miami players Incognito and Martin had some locker room differences with one another. Incognito was accused of bullying Martin. Although completely in the wrong the NFL and many other poeple believe that Martin should have confronted him in the locker room or went to the coach. Instead he leaked it to the press and it became a public issue.

----------------------------------

To begin to better understand the world we live in and how we need to shift perception toward BEINGHOOD as the best solution to healing our planet, this excellent research from a psychologist shows directly how disconnection from one another diminishes our humanity.  This is due in large part to the Dominance-Based (Blue) and Logic-Based (Orange) Worldviews that presently dominate the planet to yet gain an awareness of our inherent oneness.  From this place of separation consciousness, it is not a big leap to having little empathy - even psychopathic disdain - for others you have no relationship with.

When you are expanded in your BEINGHOOD, you can not help but feel how another must feel, irrespective of their station or life circumstance.  You would even appreciate the simple life on the land as being equally valuable to the most learned intellectual scholar or creator of great wealth.  You would know your Gift is to be in service at whatever place you are to be, and to honor the whole as one in every choice you make.

The psychopath can truly only be a product of the Fear-Based Worldviews, because only from this limitation of perception can you rationalize your actions that can be so harmful to others.  From fear, everyone is suspect, and life is a dog-eat-dog affair, so best you are the top dog.  Never mind the truth that everything reflected outside of you is how you believe the world to be.  The 1% it appears must believe the world to be a very hostile place demanding cunning over Heart.

“International or regional courts...should be created because human trafficking in an international phenomenon that cannot be properly prosecuted and punished at the national level,” said a statement listing 50 recommendations made at a two-day seminar held at the initiative of Pope Francis on how to combat human trafficking and slavery.

The Vatican statement gave no details of the proposal made by the more than 100 experts who attended the seminar.

“The idea is that it should be something along the lines of European courts that go beyond borders,” Bishop Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo, the head of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, said afterwards in a telephone interview.

The group, which will give its recommendations to Pope Francis as well as to organizations fighting human trafficking, also said it should be defined as a crime against humanity in  national and international legislation.

Sanchez Sorondo said the pope had asked his department and the Vatican's Academy of Social Sciences to hold the seminar because he was so concerned about human trafficking.

Sanchez Sorondo said in a preparatory document for the seminar, which he did not attend, that some experts believe human trafficking could overtake drugs and weapons trafficking to become the world's most lucrative criminal activity.

Francis has made defending the poor and vulnerable a cornerstone of his papacy. He has made numerous appeals for the protection of refugees.

The Men Who Want AIDS—and How It Improved Their Lives | Crimes Against Humanity | Scoop.it

For Fortner, the phenomenon of young men deliberately contracting HIV is dispiriting but not surprising. “When you’re on the streets every day — winter, summer, spring, and fall — and you find a way to have an apartment of your own, it looks better,” he says. His own experience is instructive: Once his AIDS was diagnosed, he was astonished at how much easier it was to live in New York City. “Right now the rent for my apartment is $1,150, but because I’m on the program I only pay $217, which leaves me with about $400 a month,” he says. “That’s still a struggle, but I feel gifted, because one way or another I pull through.”

I don't think the word 'evil' is helpful because that is a religious term.

Would we say that someone born as a psychopath is evil? I suppose if one is religious they would say that.

Psychopaths lack the neurophysiological “hardwiring” that enables them to care about people's feelings.

Psychopathy affects approximately 1 percent of the United States general population and 20 percent to 30 percent of the male and female U.S. prison population.

The danger in every community and nation is that it only takes one psychopath to get into a position of power (or get their hands on a gun) to end up doing massive harm.

George Stinney | Crimes Against Humanity | Scoop.it

George Stinney, Jr (1929-1944), at age 14, was the youngest person in America to be executed since the 1800s.

===

The murder trial a month later lasted less than three hours. The courthouse was standing room only, no blacks allowed.

Charles Plowden, Stinney’s court-appointed lawyer was a white tax lawyer. Plowden:

did not ask for a change of venue;did not cross-examine witnesses;did not call any witnesses;did not appeal.

Plowden’s whole defence was that Stinney was too young to be tried as an adult. Wrong: 14 was old enough according to South Carolina law.

The jury of 12 white men took 10 minutes to find Stinney “guilty with no recommendation for mercy”.
