Let's call the Isla Vista killings what they were: misogynist extremism | Crimes Against Humanity | Scoop.it

For some time now, misogynist extremism has been excused, as all acts of terrorism committed by white men are excused, as an aberration, as the work of random loons, not real men at all. Why are we denying the existence of a pattern?

Tennessee has decided how it will respond to a nationwide scarcity of lethal injection drugs for death-row inmates: with the electric chair.

Republican Gov. Bill Haslam signed a bill into law Thursday allowing the state to electrocute death row inmates in the event prisons are unable to obtain the drugs, which have become more and more scarce following a European-led boycott of drug sales for executions.

Negroes have always held, the lowest jobs, the most menial jobs, which are now being destroyed by automation. No remote provision has yet been made to absorb this labor surplus. Furthermore, the Negro's education, North and South, remains, almost totally, a segregated education. And, the police treat the Negro like a dog.

A Choice: Genuflecting Before The Five Pimps Of The Plutocracy – Or Pitchforks

A Choice: Genuflecting Before The Five Pimps Of The Plutocracy – Or Pitchforks | Crimes Against Humanity | Scoop.it

It must have been most pleasing for the five Supreme Court free market pimps for the American oligarchy to celebrate two events in Nevada. At the renown Chicken Ranch whorehouse, gentlemen came to satisfy their free market desires, while in Las Vegas Sheldon Adelson, the billionaire gambling house owner, was busy choosing the next political whores of the United States at another national “free market,” now called the Adelson Primary. At both sites candidates were preening, showing a leg—or more—and murmuring sweet somethings in the ears of the buyer, enticing him with their best “goods” on the runways of plutocracy.

The “conservatives” on the Supreme Court with their Citizens United and McCutcheon decisions made it possible for the 80-year-old Adelson to flash his $40 billion fortune before four invited governor-puppets for the Washington slave market. Would the winner of his millions of campaign cash be John Kasich of Ohio, destroyer of unions and creator of mile-long black voting lines? Would it be Scott Walker of Wisconsin, destroyer of collective bargaining and Wisconsin K-16 education? Would it be Chris Christie of New Jersey, the creator of closed bridge approaches to important places? Would it be Jeb Bush, the “should have been” and the white sheep in the Bush Dynasty?

Stay tuned for the ching-ching of Adelson’s cash registers. After all, he spent only $150 million on Newt Gingrich and other Republican sycophants in 2012.

Escort license ordinances moving quickly in south metro

Escort license ordinances moving quickly in south metro | Crimes Against Humanity | Scoop.it

WESTON, Wis. (WSAU) -- Proposals to license escort services in the Wausau area are making rapid progress.

On Friday, we reported that Wausau Police Chief Jeff Hardel would like to see an escort license ordinance as an additional tool to stop prostitution, and that work is underway on the draft language. Hardel’s wish to have such an ordinance throughout the metro area may happen quickly.

Everest Metro Police Chief Wally Sparks says such an ordinance could be enacted in their jurisdiction as early as next Monday.  “We’ve already got it passed for the City of Schofield. It has passed the Public Safety Committee at the Village of Weston, and for the April 7th meeting, it should be on the agenda. Hopefully, they will take it up and it will be passed at that point.”

If Weston and Schofield’s ordinance passes, and Wausau passes a similar ordinance later, Sparks believes they won’t need identically-worded ordinances.  “The intent is to have a similar ordinance, but either way, the purpose of the ordinance is the same for all of the communities, and that’s to give us another tool for enforcement and hopefully, a tool that serves as a deterrent and keeps people from setting up shop for prostitution services in the Wausau metro area.”

Sparks says having the tools to stop more prostitution will also help stop some of the other dangerous and criminal activity often tied to prostitution.  “It’s a growing problem, and it’s not just the sex-related crimes of prostitution, but a lot of these cases involve drugs, drug trafficking. A lot of times, drugs are exchanged for sex acts and so it affects more than just prostitution.”

So far, there have been two recent undercover sting operations to catch prostitutes and their clients, with ten arrests in the Wausau area since January.

Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

So many thoughts here...

Fundamentally, can you license something that is currently illegal? Isn't that entrapment or something?

Are we blaming "the drug problem" on sex work / sex workers now? Specifically what drugs?

And a whopping 10 arrests; sounds like there is a HUGE problem. Not.

Since this is abut drugs, how many drug arrests? What drugs?

Doingtime2's curator insight, March 8, 2014 7:09 PM

Where is the justice? In Yakiri Rubio's case there are anomalies.

According to the Commission for Human Rights in Mexico City, the actions of the Prosecutor’s Office and the magistrate’s court "were focused on prosecuting a capital murder crime and ignoring a sexual violence crime."

When Yakiri entered the Prosecutor’s Office, she didn't get a test to confirm she had been raped. She was not even allowed to call her family. Lucia Lagunes Huerta, the director of CIMAC, a feminist news agency, told me that the written law and the implemented law are different things. "There is a certain logic in the world that women don't matter and that violence against us is provoked by us," said Huerta.

When I called the District Attorney's office in Mexico City (PGJDF), they wouldn't comment. But Rodolfo Ríos Garza, a member of the PGJDF, had said in a press conference: “We have statements in the previous investigation, where she enters the hotel willingly with someone and therefore there is no evidence of rape."

The judge who sentenced her to prison, Santiago Avila Negron, was accused of corruption and sexual harassment in 2004.

An Idaho Republican can’t think of anyone in his state who has been forced to render aid to a gay or lesbian person against their will, and he’d like to keep it that way.

Rep. Lynn Luker outlined a proposal Tuesday backed by his conservative Christian allies to shield religious people from the threat of losing their professional licenses for refusing service or employment to anyone they conclude violates their religious beliefs.

How Colleges Flunk Mental Health

How Colleges Flunk Mental Health | Crimes Against Humanity | Scoop.it

One night in 2012, alone in his dorm room at Princeton University, Dan downed 20 Trazodone, his prescribed antidepressant. He had recently switched medication and was experiencing rapid mood swings; a fight with his girlfriend and a tense email exchange with a friend led him to overdose, which Dan says he knew was "ridiculous" even as he swallowed the pills.

Dan tried to make himself throw up the Trazodone but couldn't, so he went to Princeton's health center. They sent him to a nearby hospital, where doctors determined he didn't pose an imminent risk of harm to himself or others but kept him for three days to monitor his health. As Dan prepared to leave the hospital to attend a class, the director of student life left a voicemail message on his mother's cell phone: Dan had been evicted from his dorm room, banned from attending classes, and was prohibited from setting foot on campus....

According to the complaint Dan later filed with the Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights (OCR) alleging prejudice on the basis of a protected disability, mental depression - he believes Princeton treated him differently than a student with, say, mononucleosis or a broken leg - Princeton told Dan that if he didn't voluntarily withdraw, he would be forced to as soon as he had missed enough of the classes from which he had been banned. The school also told him that a mandatory withdrawal would be noted on his record and that his family wouldn't be refunded for the semester's tuition or room and board.
