Challenge to abortion bill goes to trial this week

Challenge to abortion bill goes to trial this week | Crimes Against Humanity | Scoop.it
FARGO — As the abortion debate spotlight shines on North Dakota, the state’s only clinic that provides abortions will go to court this week to challenge a 2011 law it claims would effectively ban medication abortions.

Via J'nene Solidarity Kay
Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

“I think it shows that the real purpose here is not to protect women, which is what has been claimed, but I think the real purpose is to keep women from accessing safe and legal health care services in the state of North Dakota,” Katz said. “And I think it’s unfortunate that women in North Dakota have to keep going to court in order to make sure that their constitutionally protected rights remain protected.”

Two Big Frauds: I Pretended to Be Pregnant at a Crisis Pregnancy Center | Crimes Against Humanity | Scoop.it
In reality, however, they’re often the opposite: disseminating misinformation and, in the process, robbing women of their autonomy. And the best worst part of the situation is the fact that plenty of crisis pregnancy centers, in spite of their duplicity, are actually licensed community clinics, which gives them an added air of respectability.

So, in the interest of trying to understand what actually goes on in these inexplicably legal establishments, I decided to go undercover as a preggers patsy.

Amanda Knox verdict: The real evidence and why (almost) everything you think you know about the case is wrong

Amanda Knox verdict: The real evidence and why (almost) everything you think you know about the case is wrong | Crimes Against Humanity | Scoop.it
Today Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito’s convictions for the 2007 murder of British student Meredith Kercher in Perugia, Italy were annulled, bringing this divisive case to a final close. The verdicts came as shock to both pro-innocence and pro-guilt sides, with lawyers for the defendants openly expressing their fears the conviction would be upheld, and even Knox’s supporters saying they feared a guilty verdict was the only outcome.

The reactions on both sides of the Atlantic will be markedly different; while many Americans may feel the right decision has been reached, in Italy and the UK the reaction so far has mainly been one of stunned disbelief.

Much of the U.S. media has propagated the idea that this has always been a simple case of wrongful conviction: Knox was railroaded by a corrupt prosecutor; she was beaten and bullied into a false confession; and there was no evidence anyway. Or was there?

“In 50 years of practicing law, I have never seen a more one-sided presentation by the media in the United States of the case,” says Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz. “Everybody is saying there’s no evidence against her and she’s totally innocent. It’s just not true.”
Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

It's difficult not to feel for Meredith Kercher's family in all this... Was this really justice?

Who Kills Themselves Binge Drinking? It’s Not Who You Think » Sociological Images | Crimes Against Humanity | Scoop.it
Not to mention, she says, how the alcohol industry would feel about the government telling their richest customers to curb their drinking. They much prefer that PSAs focus on young people. “This industry can well afford the much-touted ‘We Card’ programs,” says Sternheimer, “because teens usually don’t have the money for the expensive stuff that their parents can buy.”

The industry’s marketing to wealthy, white men, then, goes unchecked.

Kaitlyn Evans's comment, March 5, 12:09 PM
I don’t find it shocking that men who are 35-64 and earn over $70,000 have a drinking problem. I think that those who have stressful jobs such as lawyers, dentist, and doctors are more likely to drink or even kill themselves. I have read articles where those three occupations are the people who are most likely to commit suicide. It’s kind of a no brainer that those who earn more money than the usual and have stressful jobs would binge drink. I also think that we focus on teen drinking in aspects of how will it affect them in the long run. Alcohol is addictive and a suppressant, and this learned behavior at such a young age could continue on for years. If we focus those who are at risk we are helping them out in short term aspects but also long term.
