Vague Louisiana Bill Would Force Brain-Dead Pregnant Women to Serve as Incubators

Vague Louisiana Bill Would Force Brain-Dead Pregnant Women to Serve as Incubators | Crimes Against Humanity | Scoop.it

While shocking to any reasonable person’s conscience, these laws are surprisingly common. Thirty-one states have laws that restrict a pregnant woman’s ability to direct her doctor to remove life-sustaining treatment. In states like Texas, even if a pregnant woman explicitly says that she doesn’t want life-sustaining treatment, her express wishes can be ignored based on the state’s claimed interest in the fetus she is carrying.

Big pharma’s latest secret: the morning after pill may not work if you weigh over 165 pounds

Big pharma’s latest secret: the morning after pill may not work if you weigh over 165 pounds | Crimes Against Humanity | Scoop.it

The morning after pill may be less effective on women who weigh 165 pounds or more; it may be totally ineffective on women who weigh 176 pounds or more. So why doesn’t the average American woman know that her emergency contraception might not work?

Illegal Abortions Lead to Women’s Health Crisis in Haiti

Illegal Abortions Lead to Women’s Health Crisis in Haiti | Crimes Against Humanity | Scoop.it

After three days of vomiting, heavy bleeding and agonizing pain, she stumbled into a maternity hospital. Doctors rushed her into surgery where they stopped the bleeding, and repaired her perforated uterus, botched in the first abortion attempt...

Abortion is illegal in Haiti but women and girls are losing their uteruses and their lives as they turn to clandestine, increasingly deadly ways to terminate their pregnancies. These unsafe abortions are leading to a public health crisis in a region with one of the world’s highest rates of unintended pregnancies, experts say.

Biglaw Partner Murdered in Apparent Domestic Violence Incident

Biglaw Partner Murdered in Apparent Domestic Violence Incident | Crimes Against Humanity | Scoop.it

Today, we’ve got some sad news out of Minneapolis, where Nancy Sullivan, a Barnes & Thornburg partner who practiced ERISA and employee benefits law and served as the pro bono coordinator at her firm’s office, was shot and killed by her boyfriend as she tried to move out of the home they shared together. Also wounded were Sullivan’s daughter, Kathleen Fay, and Fay’s boyfriend, Tony Brown.

Planned Parenthood’s president thinks abortion is headed back to the Supreme Court

Planned Parenthood’s president thinks abortion is headed back to the Supreme Court | Crimes Against Humanity | Scoop.it

"It is chilling to think that for women in America, your rights now depend on your zipcode," says Cecile Richards of a wave of new abortion bans. (Is a woman’s right to choose heading back to the Supreme Court?)

Cecile Richards: I’d say that North Dakota is now the most unsafe state in the nation. Their governor has become the poster child for the most anti-woman [legislation] in the country. He has effectively banned access to safe and legal abortion. The bill is not only outrageous but unconstitutional. As a health-care provider, we know the impact it has on women to no longer have access to legal abortion. Lives are being put in jeopardy.

Facing Protective Orders and Allowed to Keep Guns

Facing Protective Orders and Allowed to Keep Guns | Crimes Against Humanity | Scoop.it

The National Rifle Association and its allies are challenging states’ efforts to take guns away from domestic violence offenders who have been served with civil protection orders.

...

For all its rage and terror, the episode might well have been prevented. Had Mr. Holten lived in one of a handful of states, the protection order would have forced him to relinquish his firearms. But that is not the case in Washington and most of the country, in large part because of the influence of the National Rifle Association and its allies.

Advocates for domestic violence victims have long called for stricter laws governing firearms and protective orders. Their argument is rooted in a grim statistic: when women die at the hand of an intimate partner, that hand is more often than not holding a gun.

In these most volatile of human dramas, they contend, the right to bear arms must give ground to the need to protect a woman’s life.

Unethical, Cruel, and Likely Illegal: Anti-Choicers Make Family's Tragedy Public Without Their Consent

Unethical, Cruel, and Likely Illegal: Anti-Choicers Make Family's Tragedy Public Without Their Consent | Crimes Against Humanity | Scoop.it

Anti-choice activist Jill Stanek recently published online the name and photo of a woman who passed away following a late abortion at the Maryland clinic of Dr. Leroy Carhart. The name and picture of the woman, I’ll call her Marie, along with information about her job, marriage, and pregnancy were soon all over the internet.

Marilee Ritchie Hird's comment, March 4, 2013 6:42 PM
That isn't really why she did it. And appropriate doesn't begin to cover it. What Jill Stanek did was, as the author said, immoral. I is beyond me how people who call themselves Christian can have so little compassion.
Deanna Dahlsad's comment, March 5, 2013 12:41 AM
The only concern Jill Stanek has regarding "the complications women have from abortions" is that she believes these women do not suffer enough. It's not just that she doesn't want women to have abortions (I think that's a prayer every person has), but Stanek works to create a world in which no woman would be allowed to have one. Removing choice isn't just removing our fundamental right under the United States Constitution, it isn't just a matter of socio-economic class (i.e. the wealthy go elsewhere to get them), but taking away Choice is to work towards the death of more women. The next time some pro-lifer goes to vote that platform, they should accept the fact that they are voting for more women to die.
Gracie Passette's curator insight, March 5, 2013 4:42 PM

If we are going to be sex positive, we need to understand the realities ~ including just how far the fundamental extremists are willing to go. Please read the comments!
