SYNC | Rosemont MS Library Links of The Week | Scoop.it
YA Literature into Your Earphones
Michael Mendez's insight:

This website posts two FREE Young Adult audiobooks each week during the summer. One of the books is a classic and the other is a fairly recent release (last 5 years). This is week two. The books are Cruel Beauty by Rosamund  Hodge and Oedipus the King by Sophocles. You must download them during the week they are featured, but they do not disappear from your Overdrive account once you have them downloaded. So, even if you thing you might want them in the future, I would recommend a free download of the book. TEXT syncya to 25827 for alerts on the SYNC title releases. They will let you know each week when new downloads are available. I have also attached a word file of the books that will be available.

Search-by-Image Fu (1MM #3) Dec 4, 2012 - YouTube

Did you know that when Search-by-Image doesn't work out so well, you can add in a keyword or two and help it out? Here's a demonstration of this using a pict...
Michael Mendez's insight:
This video has tips on finding information about pictures. The example in the video has a type of caterpillar that can be named using the Google image search and adding a few words to help Google along. Pretty cool. Maybe you could have the kids take a picture of an insect from home and then see if you can identify it using the Google Image Search.

Michael Mendez's insight:

From Richard Byrne: (Free Tech 4 Teachers)

Mathdisk is a service that teachers can use to develop interactive mathematics worksheets. Through MathDisk's "Math Builder" tool you can design mathematics models that your students can use online. The models and worksheets you develop online can also be downloaded to use offline if you also install the MiBook software on your desktop or on your Android device.

Brain-engaging geography games to test your knowledge about Continents, US States, Earth, Waters, Cities, Mountains and all the countries of the world.
Michael Mendez's insight:

This website has 25 different quizzes that your students can attempt. Some are easier than others! I did well on the Earth and Continents. Not so well on the Counties of Oceania. This could be a good warm up activity for our history and science classes to use on the Promethean board.

Presentation.io | Sync presentations to all devices | Rosemont MS Library Links of The Week | Scoop.it
Michael Mendez's insight:

For those of you that give presentations, including lecturing your class, this website enables you to broadcast your presentation to anyone with their own device. This is helpful for large presentations when not everyone can see your slides. It can also be used for students with special needs since it would help with their distractibility to have the presentation on a device in front of them. Also students with vision issues would have the information closer to them. It is free, but the presentations are limited to 48 hours. You can upgrade to more presentations that can be saved on their site for $14.

Larry Ferlazzo’s Websites of the Day… | …For Teaching ELL, ESL, & EFL | Rosemont MS Library Links of The Week | Scoop.it
Michael Mendez's insight:

Larry Ferlazzo’s Website of the Day is one that I have sent to me in my RSS Feed. (If you have questions about RSS Feeds—email me, I presented on Saturday at the FWISD Technology Conference about using RSS Feeds). He says that he focuses on providing resources to ELA teachers with a focus on ELLs. However, his websites could be used in almost any classroom. At the end of each semester he allows his students to take a survey that allows them to grade him and his class. Here is a link to the Washington Post article about how it went this year:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/answer-sheet/wp/2013/01/30/teacher-how-my-9th-graders-graded-me/

He also writes occasionally for the New York Times about ELLs

NetGalley: Digital Galleys & Book Review Copies | Rosemont MS Library Links of The Week | Scoop.it
Michael Mendez's insight:

This website allows teachers/librarians to view books before their release date. It is a good website for previewing/reviewing books for your students. It is free to join and many publishers add their books to the website. You can download many titles the same day to your Kindle or other device. Others you need to ask permission and it usually takes about 24 hours for a response. I have tried two different YA titles this week and was approved to download them by the next morning. This is great for those of you that like to read YA and recommend titles you have read to your students.

Flipped and Blended Interactive Video Learning Platform
Michael Mendez's insight:

This website is a great tool for those teachers that want to assign a youtube, vimeo, or teachertube video to their students to watch. The neat part about it is that you can insert questions into the video and have the students answer them as they go. Educanon saves their responses so that you can see if they watched it all the way through and answered the questions.
