Facebook's New HQ has a Massive 9-Acre Garden on the Roof

Facebook's New HQ has a Massive 9-Acre Garden on the Roof | CRGP_ltd | Scoop.it

When Facebook approached famed Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry to design their new headquarters in Menlo Park, California, they asked for a simple building without a heavy design. And while the building might look pretty conventional from down below, 70-feet up on the roof is something light on the environment and the spirits: a 9-acre garden.

The building, called MPK 20, is topped by a parkland with verdant green fields of grass, over 400 trees, and a lot of trails. “It’s a half mile loop,”says Lori Goler, head of human resources and recruiting. “It gives space to think.”

The images of this Daniel Libeskind monument (I use the word monument facetiously) are detailed and fantastic. It is difficult to imagine living here or even viewing it in this pastoral setting, however it does conjure up some "shock" and "awe", and in my humble opinion, very interesting architecture.

"Located on a 54 acre meadow in connecticut surrounded by 250 year-old oak trees and historic low stacked stone walls, the ’18.36.54 house’ by   daniel libeskind uses a faceted structure to frame dynamic views from all angles of the site.  Photographer nikolas koenig has shared exclusive images with us showing the various angles of the project. the 2000 square-foot home is conceived as a continuously folding ribbon structure of 18 planes,
36 points and 54 lines. its outer skin is comprised of reflective copper panels..."

Few architectural design problems are as tricky as adding to a building that is rigorously symmetrical. If not sensitively conceived and carefully executed, an expansion can compromise the integrity and compositional balance of the original. But such was the challenge faced by Tokyo-based Kengo Kuma for his first commission in the United States: a new wing for an almost templelike mid-century Modern house in New Canaan, Connecticut.

Thanks to India Art and Design for this post...."The Heydar Aliyev Centre truly is a labour of love. Zaha Hadid Architects was appointed as design architects of the Heydar Aliyev Centre following a competition in 2007. The Centre, designed to become the primary building for the nation’s cultural programs, breaks from the rigid and often monumental Soviet architecture that is so prevalent in Baku, aspiring instead to express the sensibilities of Azeri culture and the optimism of a nation that looks to the future. In this, the design is contextual." Read the rest of this very interesting piece, accompanied by great images.

Urban Think Tank Introduces the Empower Shack to the Slums of Western Cape

Urban Think Tank Introduces the Empower Shack to the Slums of Western Cape | CRGP_ltd | Scoop.it

International studio Urban Think Tank are currently exhibiting the ‘empower shack‘ in zurich. The project is developed as an adapting response to urban informality, offering not only improved housing but a strategy that allows the citizens of self-built urban communities to dynamically structure their urban environment as an instant response to their needs.

An economical protoype two story metal-clad modular structure can be self-built. Each home is allotted a determined amount of space that allows the structure to expand as the inhabitants need it, still fitting within a more organized framework. Transsolar has also made it possible to incorporate solar energy on every rooftop.

The ongoing project is intended to alleviate the housing crisis in informal settlements during a time when the government has begun incrementally improving the housing situation.

David Week's curator insight, August 12, 2014 6:01 PM

Architects still don't get it. Poor people don't need their designs. They aren't poor because they don't have good housing. They don't have good housing because they are poor. And given access to funds, they will build houses that are twice as appropriate for half the cost (at most) of any architect-designed "intervention".

KieranTimberlake’s U.S. Embassy in London celebrates groundbreaking | CRGP_ltd | Scoop.it

The U.S. Department of State - Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations announced the groundbreaking of the KieranTimberlake-designed U.S. Embassy in London on Nov. 13.

The design places the Embassy building at the center of the Nine Elms site and develops the surrounding area into an urban park that honors the English tradition of urban parks and gardens as the context for civic buildings. The paving about and within the Embassy site utilizes the familiar limestone in many London walks and parks. London Plane trees provide shade and form at the perimeter and along Nine Elms Lane, as well as the walk to the south that connects the site to Vauxhall Station, the nearest Tube stop."
