To Innovate or Not to Innovate – Now That’s a Question.

Hamlet’s line “To be or not to be…” is one of Shakespeare’s most famous. And he did write quite a few good ones. Hamlet’s concern is a choice between living a troubled life; and embracing death. OK, it’s a fairly deep analogy when it comes to innovation, but the choice of embracing or avoiding innovation choices can lead to corporate death – think Kodak.

89% of CEOs Think Talent Determines Innovation Outcome | Creativity & Innovation for success | Scoop.it

Invention and innovation are at the heart of our economy and our democratic society. They’re one of the drivers of the American Dream (flagging as it might be), catapulting lives, changing businesses and shaping our national image. America was founded on a certain brazenness and ingenuity. So we should be good at this, right? Innovation gets a lot of lip service, but success remains stubbornly out of reach for many among even our best and brightest companies

How iWorkers Can Draw Customers Closer Using Big Data | Creativity & Innovation for success | Scoop.it

iWorkers, reliable and skilled employees with 24/7 access to all the information they need, can make significant contributions to better customer service through effective use of big data.

Leading organizations are transforming their customers’ experience and differentiating their services, increasing competitiveness and revenues. For example, in a global survey1 of over 1,300 business executives across 19 industries, increased customer insight through big data collection and analysis was ranked first by respondents in their strategy to connect with customers – ahead of investment in mobile applications (second place). The third and fourth drivers involved leading edge technologies and social media, also used to better their connections with customers and gain insights into “individual customer preferences.”

How to Deal with Difficult Idea Pitch Panelists

Pitching an idea to a difficult judge or panelist is challenging but if you take a few pointers, you'll have that person on your side in no time.

If you’ve ever pitched a business idea in front of a panel, you know there’s always at least one panelist who is a complete pain in the behind.  Whether you’re an entrepreneur pitching your new business or a corporate-type pitching a new product idea to an executive committee, you’re always likely to face that one person who is a pain just for the sport of it.

How to lead an innovative team

Ravichandran Venkataraman, ACMA, CGMA, senior vice president and head of the Global Business Services division at Hewlett-Packard, has helped HP innovate by building a diverse team and welcoming ideas from throughout the organisation. He offers five tips on how to foster innovation.

1  Challenge your own beliefs

The biggest challenge I have faced in my career is maintaining the ability to challenge my own beliefs. I did a few things at the beginning of my career in shared services in 2002 that were highly successful at HP. And I got rewarded for them.

When you get rewarded for outstanding work, it is easy to sit back, relax and say, “OK, I will just do more of it.” You do that for another year or two, and pretty soon your belief system takes over and you don’t want to change anymore. All of a sudden, ten years down the line, you look back and realise that what you built is not relevant anymore.

So you have to constantly challenge your beliefs, and the way I have achieved this is by building a diverse team

Innovation Roles: The People You Need for Successful Innovation

Unlike a lot of existing business processes, innovation is still in its infancy as a process and thus is dependent on people rather than systems or metrics to drive it forward.

Also, unlike other processes, innovation requires a commitment and a belief system in order to succeed. After all, I don’t have to “believe” in purchasing to cut a purchase order, but I do need to believe innovation is important and possible in order to commit time and resources to an uncertain goal. I’ll see it when I believe it. People are important to innovation, and the right people in the right roles are critical. We’ve identified a number of important roles for innovation to succeed, including:

- Connectors

- Librarians

- Framers

- Judges

- Prototyper

- Metric Monitor

- Story Tellers

- Scouts

In some firms, one person may hold multiple roles. In larger firms each role may be held by one or several individuals

Innovate or face business extinction

Innovate or face business extinction | Creativity & Innovation for success | Scoop.it

But why are so many big companies so bad at it?

"Typically, big companies are much more conservative than start-ups and won't do anything that is untested or could risk future profits," says George Deeb. "Innovation efforts really require a very different, more entrepreneurial risk-taking mindset."

Jackie Fenn told the BBC: "Size can add to the challenges. A strong brand can have a fear that failure may damage its reputation.

"But you cannot afford to stay still - business is a moving escalator. The world is moving around you - customer expectations are changing, competitors are always catching up and threatening to take away your business."

Five paths to scale in early-stage impact investing.

You’ve heard it before: Charity doesn’t scale; business does. Social entrepreneurs and impact investors have been hard at work applying business best practices and market principles to some of the world’s most pressing issues—access to finance, water, energy, housing, health, and education—driven by a shared belief that for at least some problems, capitalism can provide an answer to the “problem of scale” that has consistently eluded the grasp of pure philanthropy and aid.

Scale matters because the size of the problems we’re trying to solve are massive: For instance, there are 2.5 billion unbanked people worldwide and 600 million people without access to energy in Sub-Saharan Africa alone.

How You Can Foster Creativity and Innovation

Jeff DeGraff discusses how creativizing can help your organization be more innovative and come up with new ideas that move your business forward.

The problem is that innovation requires variation and deviation to make things better and new. It takes deviants like my Dad to make innovation happen. Sadly I see these creativizers everywhere but I seldom see them with any real power or influence.

So they continue to do the creative work the company can’t right across the street at the coffee shop or tavern. Maybe it’s time to buy them a drink and talk a little treason.

Cultivating innovation

Cultivating innovation | Creativity & Innovation for success | Scoop.it

In today’s dynamic and hyper-competitive global markets, innovation is a crucial capability for organisations large and small. As companies vie for loyal customers, top talent and brand recognition, the ability to consistently generate valuable, new products and offerings separates hot-ticket performers from side-line observers. At the heart of every growth strategy, people play a key role in crafting a company’s capacity to develop and implement disruptive ideas.

More than a decade ago, Clayton Christensen of Harvard Business School, Jeff Dyer, professor of strategy at the Marriott School at Brigham Young University, and I embarked on a study to unlock our understanding of what skills, behaviours and actions enable individual creativity and innovation. Hundreds of in-person interviews and more than 6,000 surveys of executives and entrepreneurs (combined with detailed observations of innovators at work) uncovered several valuable insights.

But one key takeaway stood out: every function in an organization plays a vital role in the innovation process.
